In all three of these combats so far, I feel like I'm going to wipe.
I'm definitely throwing deadly combats at you, instead of playing it safe. I hope you don't mind. These combats are on the high end for challenge and XP.
I'm super curious how this combat will end. It's up to you, what you want to do, I hope I've given you enough options that you can make the decision "in character" what Pippin would do.
For future combats, you could have 5 goodberry-ies on you at all times or you can purchase potion of healing(s) and carry one on each of your characters.
One of the prisoners, who is barely alive attempts a Medicine Check DC 10 vs 3, to stabilize Thalion, so that remains at 0 hp and stops making death saves.
Shadow Fang also wants to heal his friend, uses Medicine to stabalize Thelion, DC 10 vs 12+1
don't worry about this being hard. I like a challenge. a friendly reminder that I don't know 5e. I also picked two characters that I've never played Ranger and Druid so I could learn them, plus PbP eliminates good interaction by DM and Player. for instance... it sure seemed that all three combats were surprise, and unavoidable. yea, i get "surprise" against 15 orc and a couple ogres way outmatched. so, when I see combat is overwhelming I try to Role Play a way out of it and avoid. seems like the monsters all attacked, including the owlbear.
give me a few minutes to decide why this turn looks like.
I'm inclined to ....
popping goes human. cures Thalion... takes damage... Pippin will son die... thalion fights on with range... moving and firing. odds don't look good for the gang. I need to read all this again before I give you my turn.
a friendly reminder that I don't know 5e. I also picked two characters that I've never played Ranger and Druid so I could learn them, plus PbP eliminates good interaction by DM and Player
You're doing great. We will allow Shadowfang to stabilize Thelion, a fine deus ex machina, better than DM intervention. So, you can simply focus on Pippin's turn and outlasting the Owlbear in melee combat.
ok looks like Shadowfang licked Thalion to stabilize the Ranger.
I think that means Thalion has 1hp. so, he uses his action to get up. then he uses his movement to get range. then he uses his 6 words to say: "Elf never surrender, you fricking Owlbear!!!"
I can't tell on my cell how many hp Pippin has and cant easily see his spell stuff but I'm gonna try this....
Pippin knowing his new friend has died twice in 3 combats ... and now has his own confidence and courage bolstered when he hears the G Rated cussing. he uses his action (still in Dire Wolf form) to bite the tasty Owlbear (Owlbear are in season this time of year). I can't roll on my phone. then he uses his bonus action to burn his one remaining spell slot to Wild Shape heal himself (I think I'm counting right on his slots... i think he is now at zero remaining spells except cantrips... if he drops to zero hp i dont know how he wild shapes again). I can't roll on my phone the damage on the bite.
if these two things are the best you can think of then let's go forward with this plan. if I can't do this plan, tell me. if you have a better idea, you will get the DM Of The Day Award if you share it. (A highly coveted award, I must say) ;-)
Stabilized does mean unconscious and zero hitpoints. If you roll a natural 20 on a stabilize check, you gain 1 hp, the same as if you roll a natural 20 on a death save, you gain 1 hp.
Pippin will attack in Dire Wolf form (injured -13, -16) Bite Attack: 18 Damage: 12
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The Dire Wolf is forced to transform back into the halfling, Pippin takes the extra damage of 15, with 2 hp left, Pippin uses his last cure wounds on Thelion, healing him for 12 Finally, with his bonus action, transforms back into the Dire Wolf
After a little research on 'what happens when you go to zero hit points,' I've learned about the medical thing, and that if you get stable, you have 0 hp, not 1. So you knew a stable 0 hp person would not be able to get up, run, and shout. I'm guessing a stable, 0 hp person also cannot shove a goodberry in his mouth either, even if he had one, because he is unconscious. So, let's type up what happens in this round for our brave adventures....
Thalion: Shadowfang licks Thalion and stabilizes him with the rolls in the messages above. Thalion has 0 hp but no longer needs to make death saving throws. Thalion lays on the ground, dreaming about life as a farmer, and how much safer that would be. ;-)
Prisoners: The are two wounded prisoners who are with the party, I'm assuming they are barely alive, maybe 1 or 2 hp. If either of them want to fight for their life, now is the time. They can see the shortsword laying on the ground next to Thalion as well as his longbow and quiver. Wouldn't it be awesome if they joined in the fight? think of the stories the bards will sing about! Also, Pippin would get Pack Tactics when he attacks as a Dire Wolf! <-- if so, tell me and we'll reroll the d20 with advantage below for Pippin.
Shadowfang: Having stabilized his master who was bleeding out, Shadowfang stays right by his side, lies down and licks his face.
Whisperwing (Pippin's pet owl): sits in a tree nearby, watching the excitement, and wondering why that huge owl-looking thing is attacking his master. Coo-coo?? Hoot-hoot???
Pippin: Currently in Dire Wolf form: He has 7 hp as a dire wolf. He has 1 of 2 uses of Wild Shape remaining. He has all three open 1st level slots for spell casting. for his Action, Pippin will attack with Bite, as he knows that he cannot cast spells while in Wild Shape mode.
Owlbear (bloodied, -53), with only 6 hp left, the Owlbear attempts to kill the Dire Wolf, with two more attacks Beak Attack: 24 Damage: 6 Claw Attack: 22 Damage: 9
With steely gray eyes, the Feral Halfling transforms back, covered in Owlbear blood, panting and heaving, from the fierce battle that almost ended the party.
You rest up and make it back to Far Outpost, bloodied and beaten, but not dead. Medics bring you bandages and healing potions, your wounds are tended and the next day you and the two prisoners' are in recovery, where Lt Grimes visits to ask them questions.
Lt Grimes eagerly asks, "What happened to your team?"
Prisionr. "They were killed and eaten. Only we survived. The Orcs have an enormous number of warriors for their invasion. Several of the rival Orc Tribes have recently united under a single Commander. We heard whispers that he was a dragon, but that cannot be confirmed."
Lt Grimes, "The rest of you were eaten. Such savages. Your testimony today, may have saved all of our lives. We march into the Darkwoods in the morning."
More troops arrive, and more aid from towns and outposts all across the Vesper Kingdom. Thousands of troops march that morning, and you are asked to join.
When they reach the Orc encampment, the same site that you rescued the prisoners', there is no sign of the Orcs, only logs and tarps, firepits that are cold. The Orcs may have gotten tipped off that troops were invading the Darkwoods, and with no leads, the soldiers march back to Far Outpost discouraged and confused.
You are welcome to stay in Far Outpost for as long as you like, at Lt Grimes request.
You have gained 600 XP and both Thelion and Pippin are level 3
* Join the military * Complete some Soldier requests * Complete some quests from Portwell * Keep moving to the next Outpost, Old Big Tree * Do something else, be creative, choose your own path
"Lieutenant Grimes, if I might be so bold, I would like to request funds with which to improve my combat and survival ability. I have not told you yet, yet the first expedition to deliver the goods to the druid did not go well, were it not for his help, I would have perished. Then while rescuing the spies, I was overwhelmed again. Were it not for the quick thinking of Shadowfang, I would not be with you here today." I pause. "Perhaps a reward for that safe return of those spies would improve my future chances against these evil orcs."
(and polite request of the DM: were there any Exp from the recent encounter of the Owlbear?)
If you are online, and want to offer me an opinion, I see that 3rd lvl Ranger has a Beastmaster option. I will be reading up on this. To see if shadowfang might be a good tank, and convert this pet to an animal the fits what I think Beastmaster is... the animal tanks, and I range. I will be reading up on this for the next 30 minutes. I may get a different critter for the Beast master thing, and keep Shadowfang as a friendly pet, more on this after I read about it.

Pippin uses Bite. attack: 19 damage: 11
Thelion is awake with 6 hitpoints and can take an action
Owlbear (bloodied, -46), attacks the Dire Wolf again
Beak Attack: 20 Damage: 10
Claw Attack: 19 Damage: 7
Pippin (Dire Wolf, -10, -7)
Bite Attack: 23 Damage: 7

Pippin (Dire Wolf, -10, -7, -6, -9), having only 5 hp left, has a final feral attack against the Owlbear.
Bite Attack: 19 Damage: 10
Heck ya!, on the roll.... I forgot to type:
Pippin: as his Bonus Action, he uses one spell slot to regain 1d8 HP: Combat Wild Shape: heal: 7
Pippin has 7 + 6 = 13 Dire Wolf hit points.
