When the bodies of the bandits are taken into the wagon (for bounties), the dwarf wagon master speaks up and says, "Hey, I'm Gralden I a porter for the King's Council. Here are the Ellis family, they are heading for Everwood Hollow. If you aren't heading anywhere particular, we'd love to have you stay with our cart until we get to the Silverwood Forest.
Garreth the father is a carpenter. He heard that Everwood Hollow has a high demand for carpenters, so he's moving his family to find his fortune.
Mara is the mother, a seamstress skilled in herbal remedies. She is also skilled in medicine and can make healer kits.
Lina is a bright young girl who looks exactly like her mother.
Tomas is only seven years old but he is extremely curious and energetic
Gralden says, "So is this where we part ways or you thinking of coming with us?"
It took a bit of time for Soma to come down from Battle been his first and all. It felt good to save the family and even better to be wanted. Graldens a crack shot with the heavy crossbow and easy to work with. The family is safe and seem like a great family to be around for a bit. It feels good for Soma.
Soma sincerely replies: "Gralden and Garreth's family, I'd be honoured to travel with you and see you get to Silver Forest".
*Soma takes the time to (Long) rest and reflect (add exp) on his first battle and gain what he's learned.
After two days of traveling lush roads in the Silverwood Forest, you arrive at your destination,
"Welcome to Evergreen Hollow. I'm Marshal Thorne. I'm the law in this town." He chuckles as he leads you into the town square, a round pond surrounded by beautiful white stones. He takes you to a yellow pine building with green painted shudders. "Gralden, I remember you but who are these people you have brought with you? Any of you would like to register as permanent guests? We help out new settlers by finding them lodging and getting them setup."
Garreth explains that he's a poor carpenter looking for work and that he's risked everything to move them here. Thorne seems touched by his story. "We welcome you and your family and because of how many new homes we've been building, we can put you straight to work." Thorne gets some help as three men unload the wagon and take Garreth to find a place to stay for the night.
Marshal Thorne turns to Soma and says, "So how about you? Are you just visiting or do you plan to stay?"
The two days ride post the bandit attack was very pleasant. Soma spent quality time with Gradlen and Garreth's family. Garreth's family while poor were rich in love and support for each other that made Soma feel blessed to be around. Gradlen was something else though. Soma suspects there's more to him than meets the eye? Gradlen seems too Soma to be more than just a Caravan master. Gradlen shared exotic and grand stories and far flung places he visited. He loved having an audience. Yet underneath all that was a man of solid conviction who had seen his fair share of evil and harm during his travels that have defined the person he is today. Soma came to respect him and enjoy his company.
As they approached Silverwood Forest and the village within, the first thing that struck Soma was its beauty and simplicity. The homes were ordered and the people busy in a joyous and purposeful way that was quite different to busyness of Sapphire City! A Marshal Thorne hailed them and took them down to the town square where a stout yellow pine home stood out amongst all the other houses. Thorne introduced himself and after seeking guidance to why we are all here and putting Garreth to work straight away. He eyes Gradlen and I rather pointedly. Thorne has Gradlen's wagon unloaded and who understandably becomes occupied with supervising that task.
Thorne, "I understand you acquitted yourself well guarding Gradlens caravan and helping the family?" says Thorne with some respect. "I assisted yes, but I wouldn't say I acquitted myself well Marshall Thorne, Gradlen was the real hero there with his heavy crossbow, we made a good team thats all".
Thorne, continues to eye Soma with keen interest. "Look, Master Soma, there's a place here for you if your interested, a good fellow Law Man is always welcome here, up to you"
As the day went by and everyone completed their tasks. Soma goes to meet Gradlen in the village inn. Gradlen is sitting in the corner clearly tired and looking forward to retiring soon. He looks up as Soma approaches and a small smile appears on his tired face. "How did the rest the day go for you? Are you staying or what?", Soma chuckles, "ever straight to the point Gradlen". Soma sits down as his dinner is brought to him. "I am very hungry", Gradlen is looking very intently at Soma and he clearly isn't going to stop behaving as such until he gets his answer. "I'm coming with you Gradlen, not just because your reasonable company and clearly love a good story, I made a promise to the people of Briarwood I would be their protector, so your stuck with me for the time been, and .... who else is going to keep you out of trouble!?". With that final statement, Gradlen roars with laughter and Soma eats his dinner while trying not to laugh as well.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The next day, Gradlen is packing the wagon for the next leg of his trip. Soma comes out of the inn to greet him. "So, Briarwood is our destination? It's been ages since I've traveled that far out there. Let's do it. But first I have some goodbyes to say, I won't know the next time I'll be back again this way."
Gralden (https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/122393196) brings Soma around to meet some of his acquaintances as he says his goodbyes. Borik Stonefoot, a gruff and burly dwarf, finds himself the patron to the local Elven Tavern. "Hey old timer. Gralden, can you bring back some dwarven brew next time you come to town?" Arwenna Brightleaf in her alchemy shop, "Gralden, it's so nice to see your face again. I've been experimenting with new potions and my new batch was huge. Here take a couple potions and two for your friend."
As the two are leaving Arwenna's shop, a young half-elf boy approaches Soma with a message, "Are you a Paladin? Someone in town wants to talk with you."
The young boy bring the two of them to a modest but well kept cottage where a retired dragonborn lives. "Ah, you got my message. I am Thalorn." He exists the house and guides you to his garden where he has a pond and beautiful blooming flowers. It's been too long since I've seen another in service to Bahamut. He asks if you have time for him to tell his tales of sacrifice and service. "Time flies in youth." His voice, graveled with age. He recounts battles fought and friends lost. Gralden excuses himself as the stories told take more than a few hours to tell and Soma (I assume) wishes to stay and listen to them all.
"One story, in particular, you might find interesting. It was many years ago, beyond the Darkwoods, in the mountainous domain of the Dragon Lord Valkoinen. A place of peril and frost, where the White Guard Drakes roam. I led an expedition there, seeking to challenge the might of the Dragon Lord." Thalorn's eyes gleam with the fire of old memories as he continues.
"We faced many drakes, their breath as cold as the heart of winter. Many of my comrades fell, but we pressed on. In the end, we were forced to retreat, but not before I managed to slay several of the beasts. Their scales, the same as dragon scales were a thing of interest. So we treated them as a prize and brought several of them back."
He leads you back to his home and opens a closet. In there hangs a suit of white scale mail armor. The white dragon scale mail gleams with an otherworldly light, each scale a testament to the battles fought and won.
"A legendary armorsmith named Ralrick Ironhammer crafted this armor from the drake scales. He wasn't sure that it would work but this armor has kept me safe for decades."
He picks up the armor and says, "Ah. I reminder my youth. Youth is a type of strength. My strength, a gift from Bahamut."
"But now, it's time for me to pass it on. I want you to have this white armor. May it serve you as well as it has served me."
Thalorn nods with satisfaction. "Protect those around you, the same as Bahamut's Wings encircle us all."
Gralden returns shortly after to take Soma on the road to Briarwood Village. Sir Thalorn Silvertalon embraces Soma before he leaves.

Having the opportunity to sit with a real life legend a dedicated follower of Bahamut made Soma's heart soar! The hours spent listening and reliving amazing feats of righteousness and grand adventures were meaning making for Soma will leave a profound mark. "Sir Silvertalon, listening to your stories and feats confirm why I wish to serve and your example to me means so much", says Soma with significant emotion echoing his words. They continue to talk more when it becomes evident Sir Silvertalon is becoming tired. He leads Soma to his room and opens a closet where an a most amazing sight greets his eyes. "Is that..." says Soma reverently, "Yes, beloved brother, it is, and I want to give it to you, please be my legacy my memory in times of challenge remember your oath and why we met today". Soma is speechless, he knows he must take the gift. Thalorn continues, "A new generation of our kind serving as Children of Bahamut is a great honour, serving and protecting the lost the weary, fighting for justice and fighting evil, thats what we do" and the old Paladin takes out the armour and ceremonially hands it over to Soma. The moment is private and full of tenderness. Soma realises the honour and meaning been bestowed on him its significance is profound. "Sir Thalorn, thank you, you honour me", they embrace and Soma goes to prepares and don the armour and greet the impatient Gradlen as they continue their journey to Briarwood.
Thalorn continues to stay in his front room. Siting himself by the window that gives him a clear view of the main village square. He can see Gradlen is standing by ready to go, clearly becoming frustrated as he waits for Soma to appear. When Soma suddenly appears wearing the Dragonscale armour, it fits him well like he's meant to wear it. People stop and stare, some realise where that armour comes from and its significance. Gradlen knows too and is speechless all frustration gone.
Soma mounts the caravan with purpose with a little element of bravado, understandably he is enjoying the moment! "Well well well, look at you, Dragonscale armour, what next ah?!"
Both chuckle, the villagers wave them off, children are racing alone side the caravan. Thalorn smiles knowing in his heart his life mission is now complete, he is satisfied his legacy will live on. "Father Bahamut, my life is complete receive me now into your care", as he sits in his chair overcome with weariness tears of happiness fall from his eyes and he begins to dream ...
One more day on the road, the wagon pulls into a small rustic village, with a backdrop of the Darkwoods far off in the distance. Soldiers quickly approach and stay the horses, "Is this a supply wagon?" asks one of the soldiers.
Gralden sighs, "No, I have one passenger, a paladin, new recruit for the Captain." The men point out a tent surrounded by other soldiers running drills. Most of the buildings in Briarwood Village happen to be tents. Some structures are made of wooden log cabins but one sturdy feasthall sits tall above the others, made of wood but with a stone foundation that extends to the first floor.
Soldiers bring you to the tent and introduce you to a man named Captain Harlan. He approaches and reaches out his forearm with a soldiers greeting. "So now they're sending me new paladin recruits, way out here near the river styx. I assume you don't need training like my green sprouts."
He eyes you over, looking confused at your magic armor. "Well you seem better equipped than my recruits. Say, you wouldn't mind settling in and then in the morning taking on a special mission, would you?"
He opens a chest to reveal boots of elvenkind, "Here take these elf boots on loan. We could send you on a special mission in the morning. A couple months ago, some new recruits found black feathered arrows, goblin made. My soldiers are too busy training to go tracking down goblins. We just need to know how many there are and how close. If you can get some good reconnaissance and report back, that will make all the difference. What do you say? Can you help us get to the bottom of this mystery? Find some goblin tracks and let us know how close they are to our Outpost. Are they planning to move closer or are they just passing by. Anything you can do would be helpful to our efforts and keep those cadets doing drills and not nature walks."
Harlen says that for this night, you and Gralden can stay free at the feasthall, until he can get you setup in a squad.
