I turn towards the pirate with the black headband as I feel the swords cut through me.... “WHATCHA THINK YER DOIN’????” As my face contorts with sheer anger at the 2v1 assault
I pull out my shortsword and move to strike the black headbanded pirate the elf is attacking.
AC: 16
Bonus action: I do crimson rite taking 1 damage to max hp but adding 1d4 magical fire damage.
Hurthrunstrikes at the black headbanded pirate, who takes a massive blow, but somehow manages to stay on his feet. At the same time, Reginald starts talking to the pirate with the patch, who first seems to be surprised, then takes a glance at the elf, and turns back at Reginald"By killing blabbering idiots like you!"as he raises his scimitar to attack again. But before he can do that, Baleithhits the headbanded pirate in the stomach with his axe. Although the axe is not sharp, it does quite some damage, as the pirate collapses as he is at the same time throwing up. The headbanded pirate is down! The recruits start cheering for their comrades!
The remaining pirates get ready to attack again. The one with the eyepatchbrings down his scimitar on Reginald, whom he hits in the shoulder, dealing 5 damage.
The one with the spider tattoocomes at Hurthrun again, and while the dwarf is paying attention to his comrade, and turns his back on him, the pirate manages to hit the dwarf perfectly on a critical point, dealing him 13 damage! Hurthrun falls unconscious!
The shirtless pirateonce again attempts to cut open Frord's stomach with his scimitar, but the human blocks him with his greataxe. With rage in his eyes, Frordturns towards the pirate with the spider tattoo, and roars at him at the top of his lungs: "HOW DARE YOU STAB THAT DWARF IN THE BACK, YOU FILTHY RAT!" and strikes at thepirate with the spider tattoo. He hits the pirate directly on the head, and you can hear the scull crack as the pirate immediately collapses. While he is not dead, his eyes turn white and his mouth starts foaming and as he collapses to the ground, the pirate with the spider tattoo is out! But as the human turns his back on him, the shirtless pirate sees an opportunity to attack! He manages to deal a critical strike to the human, dealing serious damage! Frord is still on his feet.
Reginald hits the pirate with the eyepatch, first with the shortsword in his right hand, which catches the pirate in the temple, then he hits the pirate on the chin with the other shortsword in his left hand, immediately knocking him out. Then he moves to the one that just cut Frord in the back, and cuts into its side with the sword in his right hand. The pirate first turns around furiously, but then when he feels the pain collapses to the ground - he almost made it, but eventually he falls unconscious as well.
End of combat
As the last pirate falls to the ground, the recruits erupt in a deafening roar! The half-orc quartermaster is probably the loudest among them. Even the elven instructor smiles approvingly. As the priests of Tempus approach, Frord rushes to the unconscious Hurthrun to see how badly he is hurt. The legionnaires pull the bodies of the unconscious pirates away.
What do you do?
I know that you are excited, but next time, please provide a little bit more detail about what you attack, with what weapon and how :) LEt's make this adventure even more epic :D
I walk towards Patchface and take his eyepatch " a little to remember you by. " I think to myself.
I'm going to go and stabalize (if needed) the dwarven warrior, at least move in and make sure he's just knocked out, and not suffering from a mortal wound. After that I will inquire about the halfling and the human before us? are the alive? I ask.
Also I'm going to go investigate among the new recruits if any of them are skilled in the art of healing.
"Stop, maggot!" Galareon orders "You are right about the pirates, but unfortunately I promised them that they would not be thrown to the sharks if they put up a fight against the recruits. At the same time..." the elf starts grinning "they DID hurt those two rookies pretty badly, one of them will probably lose a leg, and the other one might even kick the bucket, even though I told them not to go for the kill. For this reason, these murderers will be hanged from the mast. Legionnaires, bring the ropes!" He turns towards the four fighters "I will allow you to do the honors, if you wish."
Meanwhile, the priests of Tempus tend to the wounded, and heal your wounds. While you were fighting, they were taking care of the halfling and the previously drunk human. The human was too far gone, probably it is for the better that he never even came to from his drunken state as he was beaten to death by the pirates. They did manage to save the halfling's leg, but he will have a bad limp for the rest of his life.
Hurthrun gets to his feet slowly holding a hand to where he got stabbed. He puts his shortsword back in his scabbard on his back.
”Great another one to add to the collection......”
He turns to look at the pirates and his face gets stony...
”Serves them right, ain’t no place for bandits or pirates in the world lad, and lass... ye might wanna Avert yer eyes... and sorry for getting stabbed, I can genuinely say I hope it won’t happen again!”
Reginald feels nothing but contempt for this man that calls himself our leader " You should be hanging there with them " he thinks. As he feels he got an innocent man killed. "They feed them the drink the night before, promise them glory and honor. Then give them a death at the hands of criminal scum, for not being able to sober up quickly enough"
I take no part in the killing of the men but do nothing to prevent them from being hanged.
I glance towards the half-orc commander, and try to see if hes visibly up set at how these things played out. " Insight:15 , 8 If he seems distant I question him about the drunkard, and ask if his death was really necessary ? (I do this obviously out of ear sight of the elf)
After this I go find the half-ling and see how he's doing.
The four pirates are duly hanged, including the one Frord hit on the head (he seems to have sustained serious brain damage). The crowd cheers, and many spit on their corpses after they expire.
Reginald, you can't really see the face of the half-orc quartermaster, Servius Zhorgok, but you see him talking to the drill instructor, Galareon, after which he leaves to his quarters. Frord, the human barbarian, seems genuinely disturbed by what has transpired "Beaten to death by pirates... That is not an honorable way to die." Looking at the hanging corpses of the pirates, he shrugs "I guess they had it coming. I just wish they had hanged them before they killed that poor bastard."
During the rest of the day and the following week or so, you have to do various chores on the ship (cleaning, cooking, etc.), learn some discipline, to obey commands, and a lot about the Legion. You learn to march in formation, the military commands, that the official greeting is "Long live the Emperor!" and that officers tend to get quite angry if you greet them with anything else. Hurthrun, to his horror, has to climb the mast as a punishment a few times before he gets this through his thick dwarven skull. You learn not to speak to officers until spoken to, unless you have a relevant question - Reginald learns this the hard way, and he remains in charge of cleaning the latrines for most of the week. You see how a ship works, so you get the feeling that if you ever have to sail a ship, you would more or less know how to do it. You also learn about the military ranks (I will always explain them from now on as they come up).
On the ship, you have the captain, who is in charge of sailing, but the sailors do not really belong to the Legion, they are just here for transportation. The highest ranking officer here is the the Tribune, Sextus Cordius Quirinalis, who talked to you when you came up. He is second in command of the whole legion, and it is highly unusual that he would come to a simple recruiting trip. Galareon (the Whip), the drill instuctor, and Servius Zhorgok, the quartermaster, are petty officers, not full commissioned officers, who raised through the ranks. The quartermaster, who is in charge of supplies and logistics, is usually an experienced legionnaire who is deemed trustworthy. The drill instructor is usually somebody who has exceptional fighting skills, but either has a vocation to teaching recruits, or is for some reason not considered to be appropriate for leading a battlefield unit.
I head towards the common room and find the elf and dwarf. I ask them to follow me further in, and find a nice place in the corner.
" I bet you've missed this " I proceed to pour them a nice horn of ale.
I ask them how they would feel about straying a bit off course? I know nothing of note about the objective or the ones giving it, I just know that there might another place for us than scrubbing privy's.
Hurthrun grabs the horn and takes a deep swig.... "Aye that's the good stuff laddy, you know how to win over this old dwarf's heart!" What do yer mean though by straying off course? We've signed a contract apparently in blood, although I'm pretty sure mine was more alcohol at the time if yer catch my drift! Prolly the wee lass here too!"
"Well, my good Friends, i might have some news for you. But first you have to swear to keep everything i am gonna tellt you for yourself. "
I wait for them to swear then mat forward ans wispers :
"Perfect. Now, i was in the tribune's office last night. Our fight was noticed and he saw potential in our group. He wants us to form a special unit and send us to secret missions for the empire"
”HAHAHAHA YER PULLIN MA LEG LADDY!!!! I got stabbed and knocked unconscious 10 seconds In! But it was a grand ok time fightin alongside yiz for that time so aye if we all in I’m in with yer”
" It seems as though we've been given the same objective from different sources " "I wonder what this is all about? " "The quartermaster mentioned we should have a word with the barbarian that fought along side us, did your source say the same elf? and would you like to have a word with him? "
" I was thinking of having a bit of a chat with the half man, myself. They say he wont be much good with a limp, but he might be of some use to us if they mean for us to venture forth alone" He seemed skilled in other areas beside combat, but if he proves useless he can guard the camp, and prepare supper " He might not seem trustworthy, but you can always trust a dishonest man to be dishonest, it's the honest ones we have to watch out for " "Plus he's the size of a child and walks with a limp, if he robs us blind, he deserves the gold"
"Eh so yer both knew bout this and I'm the only one out?" Hurthrun thinks about this for a second and shrugs "Makes sense, what's our first mission and we need a name and a leader for the 5 of us!"
" No need to feel disheartened dwarf. I'm sure they meant nothing by it." Reginald says as he puts his hand on the dwarfs shoulder.
"a name and a leader? Is that a dwarven custom?" "I think we're all capable thinking men, I think we'll do fine in a democracy, dont you? I'm sure the elf and I will provide fine council if you were to ask." " As for a name, how about you give us one, master dwarf." I say with a smile.
