After the heat reduces in the room and the dying bugbear breathes it's last, courtesy of Talon, a pair of small glints catches Brand's disappointed eye.
Moving aside ash and charred flesh, he finds 50 GP worth of jewels, 33 silver pieces and a large iron key
Albrek coughs as the gag is removed and tries unsuccessfully to wet his now parched lips with his now dry tongue.
Raspily, he answers the questions in turn.
"Gods above that's better.
I was just doing what anyone would do when presented with such an opportunity. Trying to make a little extra coin. The Lord's Alliance can be oh so stingy. That bit about setting up a constabulary was true. At least, that's what I was tasked with. A private militia was much more profitable and served other interested parties as well.
The key? It's a skeleton key for all the doors in this place. They insisted on holding on to it so that they could keep an eye on what my men and I were up to"
"well I don't know where all you've been dear guest. Have you met the Nothic? The skeletons? I believe there's a pit trap somewhere back near the manor entrance if that helps"
Brand offers Albrek a few mouthfulls from his waterskin.
Brand then puts away the waterskin, and finishes dressing Albrek with his robe. Albrek is now manacled with his hands under his robe.
Brand states "When we met Val, she told us that your men, Redbands, have killed a woodcarver, rest his soul, for defending his wife and now the dead wood carver's wife, daughter and son are missing. Did you not have any code of conduct for your "private militia"?"
"The towns folk refer to them as bandits because of their behaviour. Making a little extra coin... at what cost? The common folk always suffer at the whims of the greedy."
Brand's eyes blaze as he lifts his hand to backhand Albrek but stops himself. "I'll leave the gag out for now, but don't forget what we told you and..."
Brand grabs Albrek by the arm and turns him to face the charred remains of the room. "Don't test us."
Brand then walks Albrek to his room so that it can be searched properly.
At the foot of Iarno’s bed is a sturdy, unlocked wooden chest holding the best pickings of the Redbrands’ loot over the last two months. It contains 180 sp, 130 gp, and a silk pouch containing five carnelians (10 gp each), two peridots (15 gp each), and one pearl (100 gp). It also contains two magic items that Iarno brought with him from Neverwinter: a scroll of charm person and a scroll of fireball, as well as three small bottles that hold rare reagents: mercury, dragon bile, and powdered nightshade. These are worth 25 gp each to an apothecary or alchemist.
Various papers and notes are stacked neatly on the desk, mostly consisting of Iarno’s written orders to apothecaries and alchemists in nearby settlements for more materials for his workshop. The characters also find a letter signed with the Black Spider’s symbol.
Brand collects the documents and reads them over before putting them away as evidence and but as he is about to put away the letter he notices Lucius's interest and hands it to him.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The Black Spider symbol catches Lucius' attention like a quick shiver down his back. While not an arachnophobe, it does pull back not so great memories of home.
My spies in Neverwinter tell me that strangers are due to arrive in Phandalin. They could be working for the dwarves. Capture them if you can, kill them if you must, but don’t allow them to upset our plans. See that any dwarven maps in their possession are delivered to me with haste. I’m counting on you, Iarno. Don’t disappoint me.

“Lucius which way next?”
Glastaff. What exactly were you lot doing down here?
Brand puts the jewels in his backpack for sale to split later and divides up the silvers.
He gives everyone 8 silvers 2 coppers each.
He holds the iron key and twirls it in his fingers. He walks up to Albrek and removes the gag.
"What is this for?"
“It must be important if your remarkably large and flammable friends were looking after it?”
Albrek coughs as the gag is removed and tries unsuccessfully to wet his now parched lips with his now dry tongue.

Lucius examines the letter and the symbol:

Lord Albrek,
My spies in Neverwinter tell me that strangers are due to arrive in Phandalin. They could be working for the dwarves. Capture them if you can, kill them if you must, but don’t allow them to upset our plans. See that any dwarven maps in their possession are delivered to me with haste. I’m counting on you, Iarno. After listening to Lucius read the letter, Brand turns to Albrek and states the obvious question.
"Who is the author of that letter?"
Persuasion check 20
Lucius turns to Albrek marching towards him at pace thrusting the letter into his face.
"Who is this BLACK SPIDER and what are your plans with them!?"
Lucius recognises the symbol to be drow in origin but does not choose to reveal that yet. He's barley trusted as it is by most on the surface.
