"This is a hard decision. I think we can continue into the mist for a bit to see what we may find, but we should turn back before we run out of rations. This mist is unsettling, but we do have a job to do. What do you all think?"
Meepo exhaustingly replies with a deep sigh before giving his take about the current situation.
"Even though I favor going back, Travus is right. This is a job and we still haven't finished it yet.
I could try to guide our group inside the fog if that's our plan. Unless its magical in nature, I am confident we could get through safely.
Let's do a bit of investigation around this ancient battleground before we move. You don't know, maybe there are clues just around us hiding in plain sight, just like this sword here."
As soon as he finished speaking, Meepo begins pulling the half-buried sword out of the ground using his meager strength.
"I'll probably need a hand or two on doing this. Hhhnnnghh."

"It seems odd that almost every living thing in the area is gone, seemingly without a trace. Whatever is going on is not only hindering are investigation but also raising new questions. Are job was to find out where the orcs were receiving thier weapons but now we have a empty town and even empty orc encampments."

"You know Bartram, I also have a question. When will you guys help me pull this thing off?"
The rest can see the small creature pulling the embedded sword from the ground with such extreme force.
"This thing right here is a weapon in the middle of an orc encampment. Magical or not, this is as close as we can get to advance our investigation about the orc's weapon supplier."

The dreaded mist surrounding us must have gotten into your system. We should take you to a healer for a check up when we get back. For now, let me give it a try."
Meepo attempts to pull the sword out, thinking that Bartram's attempt may have loosen it quite a bit.

The sword rises from the earth on the second attempt. The rust and pitted holes indicate that it has been laying here for many years, long before the mists arrived.
You hear it first, through the mist that has thickened even since you've arrived. Rattling and clinking slowly form into a cacaphony, then blend into a disturbing harmony. Obscured figures appear in the mist, surrounding you on all sides, beating swords on shields. You see arrows rattling along rib cages, and fleshless jaws chomping in rhythm. Skeletons stagger through the haze.
It is difficult to tell the precise number surrounding you; it could be as little as 40 or up to 100 behind them in the mist. A vanguard of 10 closes in, forms a line, and stops 50 feet away from you, crossing their arms oddly.

"Now this is odd, it would seem that we are boned my friends. Before we do anything hasty though, it might be a good idea to study them first." Bartram tries to study the strange skeletons that have come from the mist.

Aside from Meepo, the group recognizes the shape of the skull and beastlike appendages as orc skeletons. It is clear that their interest is not in attacking...yet. The lineup seems to be some sort of dueling tradition, which Travus recognizes as a means of averting war between orc clans. Bartram, however, quickly ascertains the further meaning.
For Bartram:
These skeletons are most likely re-enacting a scene from the battlefield, before their actual deaths. It is clear that the first time around, this dueling tradition did not successfully avert battle.
The rhythmic, almost musical noises coming from the skeletons indicates that they are willing to perform a battle-dance, or a similar performance competition.
"From what I can gather, these skeletons are most likely re-enacting a scene from the battle that took place here, before they died of course. It's clear that this dueling tradition did not successfully avert battle the first time around. It seems that they are willing to perform a battle-dance, or a similar performance competition. Anyone have any experience in these types of competitions." Bartram keeps a close eye on the group of skeleton warriors in case they become impatient and attack.

You have heard of similar competitions between orc clans - for example, tests of strength between clans; if one side proves much stronger than the other, they can absorb the clan instead of losing warriors in a battle, but if both sides prove equally strong, war between the clans may be the only way to settle it.
As Bartram pointed out, these skeletons' competition seems to be based more on performance than sheer strength.
"Never had a chance to do a battle-dance off competition to ensure survival with another tribe but I know one thing one of my elders used to say."
Since he has no lute to play with, Meepo hums his own beat and begin to quickly tap his feet followed by a series of fast spear strikes to showcase his nimble movement and flashily ends it with a set of backflips.
"Fake it till you make it baby."
