As the monstrous worm erupted from its hiding place, Elias reacted swiftly. His years of study and experience guided his hands as he traced an intricate pattern in the air, murmuring the arcane words of an age-old lullaby.
"Rest now, beast of the deep—let dreams take hold and hunger cease," he intoned, his voice rich and steady, carrying the weight of magic woven through centuries of bardic lore.
A shimmering wave of drowsy enchantment radiated outward, settling over the writhing creature like a heavy, unseen veil. The air shimmered for a moment as the spell took hold, and all eyes were locked on the monster, waiting to see if it would succumb to slumber or if battle was inevitable.
((Elias casts Sleep - depending on when his turn occurs he will be attempting to place the sphere of affect in such a way that it only affects the worm. Wisdom save - DC 14))
The monster that emerges, projecting material everywhere, surprises almost all of our heroes, who, even if they were assuming a fight, perhaps did not expect such a violent start...
...But almost! The quiet elf at the back of the group manages not to be disturbed even by this sudden evolution of events - and is ready to act!
The elf strides forward, closing with this aberration. (Ending 2 spaces above wo.) Uncertain about, well, everything concerning this worm thingie, he opens with a simple side kick to gauge effectiveness and reaction.
The worm is large, but not clumsy, and manages to retract its body just enough to dodge the elf's kick... and just after the leg has passed, missing, it tries to counterattack before the monk can fully regain his guard!
The tentacles hit home and Koran feels his skin burning like fire where they touch him! They must be poisonous! The elf tries to resist a growing numbness in his limbs that seems to want to invade him...
[[ OOC: Not only did the tentacles cause 6 poison damage... they also force Koran to make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw! Regardless of the outcome of the saving throw... ]]
...The monster, however, has not finished with the brave adventurer! The worm's body jerks forward once more as the creature tries to bite with its sharp teeth!
[[ OOC: While waiting to see the outcome of Koran's saving throw, I continue the narrative as if the monster had missed. If Koran fails the saving throw, however, things are a little worse for him - in which case I modify the narrative. ]]
But while the battle between the elf and the worm rages on, the other heroes have had time to recover from their surprise!
Elias, Tarysaa, Woodrow and Ardana are up and can act, in any order - the first who posts is the first who acts - and so on.
Elias stated that he would cast sleep - if this is still his intention, he can roll 5d8 - the total is how many hit points of creatures this spell can affect.
Tarysaa gasps at the speed at which the creature erupted from it's burrow. Composing herself, she shapes and sends forth four darts of energy Magic Missile at the creature.
((rolls 5d8 and gets 31. Of course, it would be better if this spell is cast after the others attack, since any damage sustained after the spell is cast would wake the creature. Let me RP this...))
As Elias wove his spell, he caught Koran and Tarysaa moving in for the attack. His heart leaped—if they struck before the magic took hold, it would all be for nothing.
“Hold!” he called out, his voice firm but not frantic. “Let’s see if the spell takes hold before we strike! If it sleeps, we can deal with it without bloodshed!”
His hand remained outstretched, his voice steady as the final syllables of the incantation left his lips. The magic surged forth, wrapping around the writhing beast, urging it into an unnatural slumber.
He could only hope that his companions would stay their hands—just long enough to see if his magic could end the fight before it truly began.
Wood fires his crossbow at the creature, 21 to hit for 7 pts of damage. Drops the crossbow, pulling his sword and moving to engage it next turn, adjusting his shield as he moves. The bigger they are the easier to hit. Spells and arrows fly!
The four darts of energy summoned by Tarysaa's magic leave no escape for the worm, piercing it in several points of its long body without it being able to avoid them.
Elias, worried that the pain could prevent the magical sleep from taking effect, tries to convince his companions to wait...
...And, lo and behold, in fact, the horrible opponent, slowly slides to the ground and after a few moments lies still, as if deeply asleep.
[[ OOC: Woodrow at this point can very well decide not to fire his bolt... because, now that the monster is asleep, any damage would actually wake it up... If Woodrow wanted to try to finish the monster, perhaps a close attack would have a better chance - since any hit would be a critical. Or the party could decide to leave the monster asleep and simply walk away.
Koran still has to roll his Constitution saving throw, so I can actually determine what condition he's in - but immediately after that our heroes can act freely, without going round by round, if no one does any damage to the monster. The fight is over, for now, until someone wakes up the worm... ]]
As the massive worm sagged, its grotesque tentacles twitching once before going still, Elias exhaled slowly. The spell had taken hold. No fight. No wounds. No needless struggle.
Yet, his relief was short-lived. He regarded the slumbering beast with a heavy heart, knowing what must come next.
"This is no common animal," he said, his voice solemn. "It’s a predator, lying in wait. If we leave it, it will wake... and the next soul to pass this way may not be so fortunate."
His blue eyes flicked toward the others, gauging their reactions. This was no act of heroism, no grand adventure—just a grim necessity.
"It is distasteful, but we must end it now," he continued. "Quickly. Cleanly. Before it wakes."
He did not relish the thought. But he had lived long enough to know that hesitation could be just as deadly as the beast itself.

Feels like this is going to go badly. He missed. Got stung. And now . . ..
