Hello, I'm hoping to run a game of Curse of Strahd.
I'll be looking for a 1-post-per-day commitment. I'll be taking 4-6 characters.
The characters will be a perfectly normal adventuring party that gets sucked into the mists.
The game will be run using the 2024 rules, monsters will be sourced from 2024 and 2014 sources. Characters will be built with 2024 classes, and expanded rules that predate 2024 are allowed. (Except Shepherd druid) Anything with an updated 2024 version, the updated version must be used... except for backgrounds. (See Below)
Characters should use point buy. Characters will start at 3rd level. See below about backgrounds. Characters will have normal starting gear or money, plus an additional 250 gold. Starting equipment may be sold for full price. Characters should probably be human. I'll be choosing the characters, and I want characters that won't stick out like a sore thumb in Barovia Elves. Dwarves, and Halflings have a slightly higher chance of being selected than other non-humans.
No Partnered Content or Homebrew.
Backgrounds: You have the following options for backgrounds:
Pick a 2024 background as is.
Pick a 2014 background that provides a feat. D&D Beyond will let you totally customize your ability scores. You will not get any "background features" other than the feat.
Pick a 2014 background that does not provide a feat. D&D Beyond will let you totally customize your ability scores. You will not get any "background features". You will get your choice of origin.feat, but will have to add it to your character sheet manually.

Coriana - Company of the Grey Chain Wagner - Dragon Heist: Bards. DM - The Old Keep
She was a pretty successful merchant with her own travelling cart. With her positive energy, fun and chaotic personality, and quick tongue, she could sell almost anything to anyone! One day, she bought a ring off of an old man, the red gemstone on the ring having a fire-like aura about it. One night in her tent, she was checking her new items and her profits as she did every night. When she was checking out the ring in question, she accidentally caused it to suddenly glow, and with a fiery force, a big female Efreeti Genie immerged from the red gemstone of the ring. The genie smiled and laughed when she immerged. Halo was initially confused and scared, but the genie reassured her that she was in no trouble. The Genie revealed herself to be of the name Jeluullah, and told Halo about how she was perceived as evil (She isn't) by that old man and was trapped by him in the ring, but at this point, the man grew senile and didn't realize that he sold the ring. Jeluullah tells Halo about how she's been feeling lonely and wants a friend that doesn't think she is hell-spawn. after a lot of chatting and casual banter and laughter, Halo and Jeluullah practically became besties, especially since they had very similar fun personalities! After a while, Halo mentions that as a child, she had dreamed of becoming an adventurer, and Jeluullah gets an Idea! As long as Halo keeps the Red Ring and remains friends with her, She'd give her some magical abilities so she could actually become an adventurer! After a few moments of thinking, she agrees and the pact was formed! The Red Ring acting as the "lamp" in question, Halo, and her possessions have the ability to be stored inside, protected by Jeluullah, so she won't even have to worry about missing her cart or merchant things! She still acts as a merchant when there's no adventure to be had, but the morning after this packed was formed, She looked to join an Adventuring party and go on some adventures to gain experience in the field and familiarize herself with her new magic! Whether that was the adventuring party for this campaign, if it was a different party and was individually dragged to the mists to find the campaign party, or whatever else, that'll be up to the DM.
Bran Hargrave is a grim-faced veteran of the Neverwinter Guard, a man who earned his rank not through lineage or favor, but from years spent on the front line keeping monsters out of the city’s borders. He carries himself with the quiet discipline of someone who has seen too much and speaks only when there’s something worth saying. Broad-shouldered and weathered, Bran wears his armor like a second skin and always seems ready for trouble. His shield bears the faded crest of Neverwinter, and a half-dozen scars mark the places it didn’t quite cover. Though he’s no stranger to command, Bran prefers action to words and shields to speeches. He has no idea what drew him into the mists, but if Barovia is broken, he’ll do what he’s always done—stand in the breach and hold the line.
Willem grew up in various gangs of street urchins with his little brother Hans after their parents disappeared when the boys were young. They were as happy as they could be, and developed a routine until Willem's psionic powers developed. His brother's followed closely behind, and they were soon discovered by a noble with similar abilities looking to train children like them. Their lives changed from pickpocketing and scrounging to a grueling training schedule. As they grew up and their powers developed, Willem was trusted with teaching the younger students and Hans with missions at a local Adventurer's Guild. After his brother went missing on a quest and was presumed dead, Willem left the school and wandered for a few years before following his brother's footsteps into the adventuring profession. He's generally a kind and soft spoken man, and largely keeps to himself. He wears a long, dark leather coat over his gear and is tall, but stands with a hunch.
Description: Iden is short for a human with messy brown hair and a beard.
Background: Iden was raised in the small burrow of Everlight. Most of my life was spent hunting or training with his Master Swiftfront. Iden spent most of his free time lost in books. Iden wished to truly understand how all of his spells worked. This led to him taking notes constantly. After 5 years Iden’s master realized that Iden did not have the drive to continue learning to become a hunter. After they talked Master Swiftfront decided that Everlight was not the right place for Iden. Sad but excited Iden decided to explore the world outside of this home. Iden knows that without allies or gold he will not be able to survive let alone find the knowledge he is looking for. Becoming an adventurer seemed like the easiest way for him to achieve his goals while learning about the outside world.
I wan't to be clear, I use a form of group initiative for PbP which will reduce the utility of the Alert feat.
Don't see a way to go around it, what would you recommend?
I don't know what you mean by go around it? It is still a useful feat, just not quite as useful. I'll put my init system in a spoiler block. If you no longer want the feat, you pick another background option.
I roll one averaged initiative for the NPCs. I roll individual initiative for the PCs. A) PCs who beat the enemies go. B) Enemies go. C) PCs who rolled lower than the enemies go. D) PCs who beat the enemies go E) Enemies go. F) All PCs go. G) Enemies go. Alert still provides a +2 to initiative, increasing the chance of being in group A. The second benefit still lets a player in group A swap with someone in group C.

Coriana - Company of the Grey Chain Wagner - Dragon Heist: Bards. DM - The Old Keep
Known as "Dr Plague", and somewhat feared by the general populace for his strange appearance, nevertheless Ebur travels the land seeking to eradicate disease, as well as any aberration of nature. Knowing as he does that life and death are two sides of the same coin, he strives to heal that which can be healed, and to hasten back to the soil that which cannot.
It isn't closed yet! Been looking to get back into PBP, and I never got the chance to play COS, so this seems like a golden opportunity, even if I seem to be a bit late to the party. Now, let's see...
-Backstory and Motivation: Ellora grew up a simple life, the eldest child of a family of scholarly mages who ran a small library. As the eldest, Ellora picked up some of her parent's craft, training to be a wizard, though she was nothing exceptional in that field. She did however, find a fascination with fire magic. One day, while manning the desk, a strange figure entered the library. A shady type. She watched as the figure delved deep into the stacks, eventually finding a book which they read intently before returning it and leaving. Intrigued, Ellora retrieved the book, and found it to be a strange codex not on the magic of the arcane, but rather a theological treatise on the religious significance of the sun and the gods associated with it. The tome was large, and Ellora started reading. Late into the night she read, using a bit of fire magic for light. At midnight, she heard a sound. The shattering of glass. The mysterious figure had broken in to the library. Startled, Ellora lost control of her magic, and accidentally set the book aflame.
As soon as the fire touched the ancient, brittle pages, it ignited like a beacon in the night, burning away in an instant. Arising from the charred remains of the tome was an ethereal spectre, glowing like the light of a thousand suns. An angel. It looked upon the intruder, and promptly incinerated them. Turning to Ellora, it explained that it had been trapped within the manual by the author of the book, a grief-driven cleric of the Sun God who had trapped the angel when the angel smited one of their party members, who had performed a vile act. It, the angel explained, was sent by the Sun God to guide those on their path to becoming a beacon of light and hope. As thanks for freeing it, the angel directed the now inspired Ellora to devote herself to the Sun God and become a force for light in the darkness. Ellora accepted, and journeyed to a temple in the city to become a cleric of the Sun God. After many months, she was ready to graduate from being a novice to a full priestess. As her trial of faith neared its completion, she looked up, and saw the sun shining bright down on her, and she smiled, ready to brave the darkness.
-Appearance and Mannerisms: Ellora is tall and slender, standing at about 5'6, her build light and agile, though she lacks much physical strength and muscle due to her upbringing. Her once pale skin has now darkened into a tan from hours basking in the light of the sun, and her golden hair swings back and forth in a long ponytail as she strolls down the road. Her face is round, with freckles dotting her cheeks and nose, the small pink scar on her cheek from the family cat the only mark of 'danger', if one could even call it that, that she bears. Her fingers are long and delicate, the nails chewed down, a bad habit of hers that has persisted since childhood. Her eyes are a brilliant blue, and they dart around a new place with curiosity and kindness, though they can sense danger with relative ease.
Despite this fact, Ellora often shies away from danger, as she has had no real experience with fighting anyone, despite the priests teaching her how to utilize her magic in a fight. For her, adventuring has been all fun and games up until now. Just some old ruins with a bit of treasure and a cool fresco, no real vicious monsters or deadly traps. Though the dogma of her faith compels her to be bold and blaze like a fire, Ellora often isn't the bravest or the boldest, though she is saved from complete social failure by how endearing she can be. To many she grows close with, she often adopts the role of a younger sister, a little cute, a little fiery, a little excited to follow the 'big kids'.
Apperance: Sephon is a pale, white skinned, and short male, who stands at about 5'7, with a average build, and a head of curly, untamed medium length brown hair. They wear a expensive and fine suit of clothing that is rather torn and dirty. Sticks and leaves stand out of their hair, muddy boots, and so forth. Everything they have is some fine item in horrible condition. Their eyes are a hazel with red in them. They appear to be in their mid twenties.
Backstory: Sephon was once the apprentice of a evocation wizard that did a slight bit of necromancy, but also some alchemy. When they worked for the wizard, they where high in class, and their mentor was well known in the town. But tragedy struck, as their mentor tried their hand it transmutation, Sephon changed. They grew aggressive and dim, like that of a beast with true thoughts. They did not fight back against their mentor during lessons, but they did not cast the magic; they couldn't. So they wandered around the only places they knew; places of death, of necromancy and evocation. They could still talk, but soon found it better around the animals near the graves, the crows they could handle. But people? Complicated. So Sephon wandered around Ravenloft, and into Barovia.

Character would serve as healer/spell utility role. Could also do a cleric variation if preferred, but would seek guidance on deity choices.
