I'm guessing my books are the 2014 version without looking at 'em. I'm okay with whatever route you choose for figuring out your stats, and as for alignment, I don't have any restrictions.
Here's a cut'n'past. I'm still looking for one more PC at least
Welcome to Groghaven, a seedy port on a mid-sized island of the same name. Groghaven is a popular port for pirates, privateers, seedy merchants, and exotic people of all sorts. Ruled by a loose council of Sealords, Groghaven is a place where you keep your friends close and your blades sharp. While in port, 'most' visitors and long-term residents maintain an understanding of neutrality. While bladework and dry powder are often on display, what passes for the local authorities highly encourage, (sometimes by force), disputes and such be taken out to sea. After all, even the worst needs a place to cavort, spend, and brag, no?
Groghaven is also a place to find crews or berths, to hone skills and learn new ones, to acquire weapons and gear or repair those that you have. Tavern's and winesinks abound, as do bordellos of all sorts, merchants and dealers in bulk goods with few questions asked. It is also a place where the business of the Imperial Cities that are not 'ok' can be conducted on the down low. The Imperial Navy (usually just called The Navy) keeps its distance, although lone agents and such can and do operate here.
Recently a rumor has come to you that a noblewoman of Elven descent has purchased an armed sloop from the best shipwrights on the island and is in search of a stalwart crew.
ooc > We're looking at adding one more for sure, maybe two. Experience has taught me that players can be fickle, and that some decide later that this sort of PBP isn't for them. I've tried purely open sandboxes before, but the last one is limping along because of a lack of collaboration by the players, mainly because the 'leader' PC dropped out due to college obligations. So, I thought'd I'd have the captain be a NPC in hopes of keeping things moving. As for the campaign, I have 'a concept of a plan', and suppose in 'two weeks' might have more, heh. Mainly I prefer to let the story develop as the characters interact with the setting and each other.
I will post maps as needed, hand drawn on hex paper so don't expect them to be flashy, and I do use the occasionally A.I. created art for flavor because it's cheap (i.e. free) and easy. The ship is small, but we all know that it should have a crew of a dozen or more, so for the sake of sanity, I've decided magic and steampunk themes can be used, so the 12 cannons, six to a side, are sorta animated. Aim and fire, leave the 'magic' to the loading and swabbing. 'course, a dedicated gunner would be nice, after all, someone(s) need to roll to hit.
As always, I am open to ideas, and I often find them in backstories of the characters as well as 'going with it' when things develop in game, which they often do. Some pirates can be allies; others deadly foes, and The Navy as well. Plus lots and lots of 'monsters', I suspect. Well, we'll see where it goes.
I'm guessing the older version since I haven't purchased anything for D&D that was recently published. firearms are permitted, muskets, that sort of thing, although I am open for dragonpunk versions as well (i.e. homebrew that makes sense to me, heh). I don't, in general, condone PVP stuff, but if to said players decide they have beef and throw down, I'd guess we'd have to see how that works. Mostly the crew should be 'good guys' at least to each other, everyone else would be fair game.
Alright since it seems like 2014 rules, here's my character:
Name: Amos Blackwood
Race: Hill Dwarf
Class: Fighter (Eventual Cavalier)
Background: Knight
Ability Scores (Standard Array):
15 10 16 12 14 8
Backstory: Amos' father had served in the Navy, and his father's father, and his father before him.
There was never any doubts in the minds of his family whether or not, Amos would continue the Blackwood family tradition of serving in the Navy, except. If any of them had bothered to ask Amos his thoughts, they would have realized that the Navy was the last place Amos wanted to end up.
His family had given him clothes of silk, food worth more gold than his family paid their servants in a year, and instruction from some of the finest martial instructors in every weapon and armour under the sun, and Amos found it all stifling.
He had wanted to be a Knight going on adventures, winning glory, and saving damsels on the high seas, yet he found himself locked in the Blackwood tower like a princess from the books he read. Amos wanted for nothing except his freedom.
Until one day, the brat who had been spoiled rotten all his life snuck out, and ran away from the lap of luxury, armed with a sword, delusions of granduer, naivety, and more pride than wits, on a quest to make his name known.
Note that Persephone has spent several game days in another campaign from which she has lots of gold, a horse & gear and chainmail & shield. She also has a homebrew spell (Persephone's Pugilistic Pacification) because her deity realized that "Inflict Wounds" causing necrotic damage was kinda OP for opponents you didn't want to kill.
I'll remove any of those you request.
Persephone spent some time dealing with Vengence Paladins fighting a Banshee and had trouble figuring out which was more evil. Nothing like an ocean voyage to take your mind off it.
Persephone tries not to let things bother her, but once you cross the line she'll punch your lights out.
Sounds like a good addition for the crew.

Shall we introduce our characters, or hold off?

We're 3rd level, so you can start as a Cavalier. That's quite an interesting choice for a naval/pirate campaign. I love it!

It is possible they were not accepted to the campaign.
