Just an observation, but on most big ships, the Captain stands alone as master of the vessel, while the trifecta just beneath the captain consists of 1) chief deckhand/bosun, 2) chief engineer, and 3) chief steward/quartermaster. I'm not familiar with whether or not each of these three roles would have an analog on a spelljammer ship, so they may not be necessary. Just wanted to put it out there for consideration. Will be submitting at least one option before too long. Thanks for running this, Pokepaladdy.
Yeah, I thought I'd put a little twist on the typical IRL work, basically allowing for if whomever the captain to get some help with the main "in charge" roles, and if they aren't available IRL for a bit, there are two backups to take lead. The ship will have about 20 mooks that are there as stand-ins for the other random jobs on the ship.
This makes perfect sense. It would feel weird if the player party made up all of the crucial roles on the ship, because there is no way some of them wouldn't stay with the ship. On that note, if one of the PC's is a pilot, might I suggest that they are not the only one? That way the ship isn't "dead in the water" whenever that PC is adventuring with the party?

There will be a couple of relief crew for piloting. The PC will basically be the "head pilot", so they are not having to run the ship 24/7. The roles are basically "Boss of this division", so there will be a couple of backup mooks should something befall them during that time.

"Auto-pilot, engage!" "No results found for 'otter pile enraged.'" "The system's jammed again! Spell-jammed!"
But on a more serious note, couldn't that other pilot be one of pokepaladdy's mooks, like pokepaladdy was saying? The captain/first mate could just directly tell the mook where to go.
EDIT: Ninja'ed! Someone been taking levels in monk? ;)

Not to worry! The idea of the campaign is a group of fresh adventurers on their first trip into space! It's great to see people looking into this campaign setting that hasn't seen any love for a while (I'm not an expert on Spelljammer, but wanted to try running it for a while), but I'm planning on doing this on a step-by-step basis. I'm writing up adapted rules for 5e right now, but will only introduce them as and when convenient to not overload people on spaceship rules.

Hey Poke! I'd love to apply as well, and thinking about something suitable made me come up with a funnny but probably questionable idea. Would you allow someone who is, partially, a descendant of the Mirrani? I wanted to try out a Kalashtar for a while now and thought that if the Quori linked to the character would be someone brought by the Mirrani it would make for quite the strong drive to venture out into the world since he could be dreaming about passed galactical voyages. What might be even more daring on top and i know it doesn't quite fit lorewise, but a warlock or blood hunter pacting with the Quori sounds hella cool. Other than that, what are you thoughts on the artificer? Someone addicted to discovering new magic and ways to use it would perfectly fit the setting. If you don't like it, i'll come up with something more standard as well tho (:

The hulking creature attacked the group and through the sacrifice of his comrades, they were able to vanquish their foe. Left with a few of their numbers and knowledge of such danger exists, Elirdain decided to learn more how this aberration came to be but doing that he must sail across the sea of stars where it came from.
Bearing warnings and proof of his claims, he now waits for the leaders of Evadil to decide if the threat he presented is good enough for them to take action and place him as one of the crew boarding the Maiden's Horizon.
In the interest of helping everyone out, I would like to point out that Pokepaladdy said the backstory entry of each submission needs to include why/how the character was selected to be part of the crew. There are some real cool ideas being submitted, but some of them are missing that point and I don't want anyone to miss out simply because they missed an entry requirement. Good luck, everybody.

Backstory: Prof. Valdayz was an vedalken arcane scientist of great renown, with many great breakthroughs in the field of arcane biomechanical science. However, he had one flaw. He would never accept that another had trumped him, and was always looking for ways to improve both his knowledge and himself, via magical means. With the coming of the Mirani, he was outraged. How dare this other race invent these 'spelljammers' before he did! He became more and more invested in his studies, and refused to see any other living beings. He finally left his lab completely changed. He had integrated both biological creatures and arcanomechanical devices into himself, coming out a completely new man. He claimed that the perfect being was the perfect balance of flesh, machine, and magic, and he had come closer to that than any other being before that. The others disregarded him as a madman, and cast him out of the institution. Valdayz was not fazed by this, and continued his quest to become the perfect being.
When Valdayz heard of the development of the Maiden Horizon, he saw this as a perfect opportunity to finally get away from the rest of humanity(and elfanity, and dwarfanity, and gnomeanity, etc.), and discover new assets that could possibly further him on his pursuits toward becoming the perfect being.
Valdayz is a Simic Hybrid with the manta glide adaptation. He looks similar to a vedalken, but he has the following differences.
- His left hand is slightly translucent, and disappears altogether if he becomes unfocused. His left hand has actually been replaced by an apparatus that allows him to channel his energy through it, in order to form a hand of force which he can move at will.
- His right arm has an apparatus affixed to it that can channel electricity through the hand that he is currently wearing, delivering a shock to whoever he touches.
- He has a monocle-like apparatus fused to his right eye, which allows him to sense his opponent's weaknesses.
- At any given time, he also has a number of apparatuses affixed to all parts of his body.
- He has slits down the sides of his torso, through which he may extend his ribs, which have a membrane stretched over them(This is weird but a species of lizard can actually do it). This allows him to glide.
I thought that it would be fun to play a wizard that actually uses himself as a spellbook, and switches out attachments and apparatuses instead of preparing spells.

So basically a little like Spock's story in the Star Trek reboots? Person born of two worlds and trying to find their calling; could work. Feel free to pop it down as a character idea, I've purposely left things open and vague at this point so I can build the world around the players and their characters. I'm all for people getting to play things they really want to (within reason, of course).
What are you thoughts on the artificer? Someone addicted to discovering new magic and ways to use it would perfectly fit the setting. If you don't like it, i'll come up with something more standard as well tho (:
My only issue currently with artificer is tracking it on D&D Beyond. As mentioned, I found a work around for mystic, but due to the unique mechanics and spell list of the artificer, it's a little more difficult to track on the website. I won't say "no", but keep in mind that it is a bit more paperwork in the long run. Beyond that, there are whispers in the rumour mill that artificer may be getting a new playtest once the Ravnica stuff is done flooding the UA works.
I thought that it would be fun to play a wizard that actually uses himself as a spellbook, and switches out attachments and apparatuses instead of preparing spells.
Not sure if you've played 4e, but did you ever see the Self-Forged paragon path from the Eberron Campaign Setting book? It is basically an artificer that begins to graft things to themselves, slowly making themselves more machine than man (or elf, dwarf, whatever). Effectively creating the "modules" for your spells can be the equivalent of the expensive inks etc. needed to purchase extra spells.
((I've seen a character concept someone had where a wizard would use his own body as a spellbook, scarring the spells and stuff in his own skin.))
I put a character concept down for someone like that for a campaign! Didn't get into it, unfortunately, but it was my way of playing a war mage in a prison, so they could have a spellbook still. The character was a psychotic character that used rituals to cut their own flesh and embed the spells using the blood of his enemies (and some incense etc. for the material costs effectively making up the gp cost), then would recollect the kill while tracing over the scars to prep his spells. A bit of a darker idea, but yeah...

Character Profile
Name: Prof. Valdayz
Race: Simic Hybrid
Class: Wizard/invention
Background: Sage
Position: Arcane Researcher
"Ignorance is bliss, and you look absolutely miserable."
((I've seen a character concept someone had where a wizard would use his own body as a spellbook, scarring the spells and stuff in his own skin.))
Kandalou Dle'tan - Level 9 Githyanki Fighter (Champion) - Rrakkma PbP
So basically a little like Spock's story in the Star Trek reboots? Person born of two worlds and trying to find their calling; could work. Feel free to pop it down as a character idea, I've purposely left things open and vague at this point so I can build the world around the players and their characters. I'm all for people getting to play things they really want to (within reason, of course).
