You begin to make your way down the alley, your footsteps echoing off the sides of the buildings as you walk.
The alley pitch black the only light being cast by the sole streetlamp standing halfway down the alley, while you can see the outline of the buildings and the pieces of refuse and debris that line the edge of the cobbled street you are unable to make out any movement.
You are only several feet into the alley when there is a flutter from behind you, you turn sharply and a piece of paper gently settles to the floor in-front of you.
Picking up the letter, the paper initially seems black then almost as if it was being written in front of you a blue pen writes out the following;
Loran Valdez-Rand,
I apologise for the timing of this letter and the haste in which I had to write it, however, you left the Tower of Order before Taera could speak with you.
You have been sent to investigate Candle Lane by Captain Cayrith, I know you are loyal, and do this without question, so it is not lightly that I ask this, DO NOT GO TO CANDLE LANE. On your own you will find only death there, and another loyal Waterdevian will be lost.
There are too many variables to track, too many pieces on the board. Your friends have something of immense value to the city, but without knowing how the dice will fall this night, better to remove the pieces from the board than loose them, for now atleast.
Your friends have been taken, but they are not hurt and will likely want to leave the city as soon as possible. This is unfortunate but understandable as they feel they have a greater calling. They do not know, as you do, the power that can found here. They are the unknowing guardians to a secret that could restore Waterdeep to its former glory, if I could guarantee the hands it would fall into, if it remained in the city limits, but as I said better to remove it from the situation than gamble and loose.
So I must ask of you something that will be harder to do than throw your life away in a dark alley at the request of a mentor dear friend, and I hope that my name and title can persuade you that it is for the best.
Please Loren, do nothing tonight. Get what things you need and head out of the city, if your friends are pursuing the threat of the Battalion or the Giants then they will head to the Dessarin Waystation.
Do not let anyone take that piece of the puzzle from you. Keep this letter safe and mention it to no-one actually it might be better to burn it when you can.
I will get word to you, somehow.
