At the necklace... “If nobody else wants it, i’ll Take it. Thank you.”
Jack frowns at the hideous smell, but remembers he just killed a bunch of demons, and then remembers his armor can’t have stains, so he shrugs. “We are here to tell something to some guards and crap.”
(If no one else makes a claim for the necklace, I'll add it to Jack's inventory a bit later.)
Guard: "Two wagons-full of adventurers, huh? If you want to get drunk enough that you vomit on yourselves and sleep in a bog, that's your business. But you have to clean yourselves before entering town, so you don't offend the decent folk."
(Except for Jack's immaculate armor and the wagon drivers, all of you are covered in algae from the bay, look like you've been a brutal bar fight, and that unidentified smell is just awful. The eight ex-prisoners are covered up in blankets, and worn out enough it could be mistaken for hangovers. Jack and Trim haven't said anything to make these guards think differently... You do notice that the guards were not repulsed when they checked on the second wagon. The smell seems to be entirely from the wagon your party is in.)

"The rest of us all came from the same general area," Froskan says to Isk. "We all signed up separately as caravan guards, and ended up sticking together when that job was done."
”Well, ye think i’m Drunk? We just saved these peoples lives, ye know. And we didn’t sleep in a bog, what are we, frogs? And we aren’t in that bad of a shape.”
“Ye know, you’re really going to keep us out for rescuing people from demons and worshippers of *insert mad aquan blubbering here* umberlee! Now let us in so we can take a shower and stuff!”
Isk extends a hand to the guard, "Let me apologize for the others. You see, myself and these few..." he gestures to the other ship passenger survivors, "We were on a ship traveling to Nunkreet before being attacked by a school of Merrow. A school...do you call them a school? A flock maybe? At any rate, these brave souls rescued us from harm, and dispatched no small amount of evil in the process. We would greatly appreciate a hot bath and night's rest."
(I wasn't going to ask for Persuasion, but a 22 never hurts.)
The guard is confused at Jack's ranting about sea monsters, but Isk's explanation straightens him out. The other guard pulls the blanket off the heads of some of the other passengers, and recognizes some of the fishermen who had gone missing a week ago. A fisherman explains being held captive by sahuagin to the guards.
The two guards head over to a nearby building, and are soon joined by 4 other guards and an officer. The officer asks the five members of your party to step off the wagon. He wants to take you (in a different wagon used by town guards) to a meeting hall, for the town leaders to hear what you have to say. He realizes that you are tired, but this sounds important and urgent.
Two of the town guards hop on the two wagons from the fisher farm, which drive to the east. The former prisoners are being taken to the temple of Eldath for treatment.
After getting off the wagon, your party realizes that the disgusting odor has followed you. (The ex-prisoners inside that first wagon breathe a sigh of relief a minute after your party exited.)

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Froskan also searches himself and his pockets for anything that might cause the smell, then helps Trim presto everyone to try to get rid of any filth that might be causing it.
Everyone is happy when Trimyrai removes the layer of salt and algae from being in the bay. But the stench persists. Froskan and Reverie try to sniff where it is coming from, and almost gag.
Iskander steps back, then carefully walks closer to the other 4 party members. It seems to be coming from... Jack. (Puzzling, because Jack just claimed that his pockets are empty, and the Bag of Holding doesn't let air in or out.)
Side note: With Jack wearing the Necklace of Adaptation, he has advantage of saves versus poison gases... Jack barely notices the smell, and wonders what everyone else is complaining about.
