I have certainly been moderating rest usage. So far two separate teams have each taken a single rest during gameplay, and I have allowed it without imposing unnecessary restrictions. If a team took a rest after every combat I would take action immediately and prevent it from happening. To be honest, rests never factored into the equation until Year II, and I rolled with the idea. Long rests will not be allowed, but I see no problem with a team taking one or two short rests a game.
It all boils down to this: if every team has the opportunity to take short rests, perform ritual spells, and partake in other activities, the playing field is level. If one group has an ability to do something, it also applies to the other three groups. If every team is OP, no team is OP, if you get my meaning.
A certain amount of this blame falls on my shoulders for not making this clear at the beginning of the game. In truth, this was only because I was not expecting these situations to arise during gameplay.
Well, if you felt that your group was approaching the point that a short rest would have been useful to maintain your righting readiness but weren't sure that it would be allowed, why not just simply ask the DM if it would be okay? There is nothing wrong with asking for clarification about anything, or asking if something is allowed or not.
I mostly hadn't even thought of the possibility of doing a short rest with other adventurers around that could (theoretically) ambush you in the middle of it. I have no idea how large the actual dungeon is, but mostly assumed that we ran into other players soon enough in the first game (and in this one as well), that stopping to sit around for an hour seemed more likely to let another team walk in on you than to actually be able to do a full rest. Which admittedly is a failing on my part for not really considering it/asking about it. I don't even have a problem with short rests being allowed, I'm just not a fan of the fact that it didn't take any time or give us (or another team) a chance to possibly find you before it finished. Either way I'll definitely plan for it if we do a third round and I'm a part of it. Even if everyone knows short rests are allowed, the different posting speeds could still make a difference on the effect they have.
In our case, even if I hadn't considered it before, it's possible I might have asked about a rest after the fight with the wights/zombies, or another party member might have suggested it, depending how the fight went (I don't at all remember how much damage anyone else had or hadn't taken. I had taken 10 from a trap at one point. I also just remembered I bought healing potions before this round and completely forgot about them, so I'm an idiot for not using at least one of those after taking the damage :P. Though it wouldn't have mattered in the end in this case at least). If we HAD decided to take a rest after that fight (and not been interrupted), it would have basically put us at the same timeframe you guys started your own rest (ignoring the rituals, or if you assume the ritual took about the same amount of time as the others were spending doing other stuff at the same time, which....who knows, but I'm happy to accept that for the sake of argument). At which point anytime one of our teams interrupted the other in a fight would make perfect sense.
And I'll say again to be clear, I'm definitely enjoying the game, I love the concept and the whole idea behind it, and have had fun playing both rounds. And much appreciate JJWattaker99 running it for us. Just saw this and wanted to bring it up for discussion before the next round. If you want to keep running it the same way, that's fine, just want to make sure I know what's going on for next time.
Rests: Teams are allowed 2 Short Rests per game. Long Rests are not permitted during gameplay.
Flanking: If two friendly creatures that are not Incapacitated are on opposite sides of an enemy creature, the creature is considered Flanked. Both Flanking creatures have advantage on attack rolls against the Flanked creature.
Feinting: A creature within five feet of an enemy creature may take the Help action to Feint and Distract the enemy creature. The next attack roll made against the Distracted creature before the beginning of the Feinting creatures next turn has advantage.
It looks like this campaign has ground to an abrupt halt. Everyone who is still around please let me know so I can determine whether or not to discontinue the Gladiatorium games.
I regret to announce that a full third of our gladiators are no longer competing in the competition and that Gladiatorium draws to a close. Thank you all for your perseverance and fortitude, and I hope to adventure with you all again.
Good luck in all your future endeavors, D&D-related or otherwise. May your new year be filled with crits!
