There's a large door that leads to the library part of the library. There's the main doors that lead outside. Unsurprisingly, those doors are shut tight with a heavy deadbolt. Then there are the stairs that lead to the second floor located behind the reception desk.
As you are about to ascend the stairs, you see what appears to be a middle aged woman lying on the ground. Due to the walls blocking view of her body, you can only see her head. The back of her head is facing away from you. Maybe she's unconscious?
Chives runs over, and turns the women over to see her better.

When Chives runs up the stairs to the woman she recognizes the woman as the librarian. She also notices that she's missing the rest of her body. She also notices a Giant Rat attacking a door. It hasn't noticed you yet.
William recoils slightly at the grisly sight of the librarian and then sees the rat attacking the door and whispers, “it may have people trapped on the other side of the door. We should try to save them.”
OOC: how far into the library have we moved, specifically, can we still see out the window to try and judge how long we have before the rat swarm outside besieges the library?
Yes you can see the window you came in from just barely. However, the main gates of the library are too sturdy for rat swarms and Giant rats to break through. The rat swarms won't be able to get through the window. However Giant Rats might be able to follow you inside.
So what are you guys going to do? If you plan to fight the Giant Rat head-on, roll initiative. If not, let's hear what your plan is.
William hesitates and looks at the group to see if any of them are signaling him to hold off the attack. If no one objects he moves in to combat the giant rat.

OOC: My armor of Agathys lasts 1 hour, is it fair to say it is still active from the fight in the street?

Any open second floor windows?
There are windows both on the first and the second floors. They aren't open.
“Yeah let’s see if any are unlocked.” William starts checking first floor windows.
Sorry but it's Chive's turn.

Chives opens a first floor window without issue.
To get to the second floor windows you can use parts of the building as footholds. DC17 Athletics.
William will follow them through the window when he gets a chance.

Chives is not sure how many rats there are. However, they seem to be coming from the library... well deeper in to it.
