Here was the crisis Strife had hoped to avoid, destroying the fragile balance she had kept. Now that it was upon her, she knew she wouldn't hold to her promise to herself, that she would instead reach for that one desperate chance, the last and most expensive card she might play. It was never supposed to be this way, but if it were only a matter of relinquishing her secret dream of vengeance, she was prepared for that, having always understood how unlikely it was she might ever fulfill her ambition. Asmodeus would continue to play the great game just as before, and would never suffer at the hands of Infrakta.
Though she was willing to let that go, something had changed, an unanticipated factor that radically altered her calculation about how best to lose. She had learned to appreciate the wisdom of recognizing and conceding defeat, of letting go while you could still shepherd your soul to safety and rest. But what happens when you care about something beyond yourself, something beyond your personal fate, with an intensity to rival the fires of hell?
That level of commitment was what inspired Strife to enter her pact with Dispater in the first place. She had not possessed sufficient natural talent to unlock the magic of song and verse, but she had the will to bargain for it. She obtained the power she needed, and in exchange, she persuaded and often deceived those she judged to be evil into entering pacts of their own with Dispater. Her victims willingly and foolishly surrendered their soul, either for a small but urgent reward, or the promise of a large reward that the contract wording didn't quite guarantee and would never deliver. As Strife began to harness her bard powers, it only became easier to obtain the binding signatures that sustained her endeavors, but she tried as much as she could to devote herself to noble purposes. Certainly, aiding the recovery of the delegates, and trying to thwart the elemental cults, allowed her to comfortably rationalize her decisions.
But how could she ever explain such a devil's bargain to her friends, and especially to Carrhae? She was afraid Carrhae loved the idea of Strife, but would shun the dark truth of Infrakta. Whether the souls that Strife escorted to damnation were of an evil bent didn't change the fundamental fact that they were valuable currency to Dispater and aided his cause. Were Strife's actions sufficiently good to offset the cost?
Strife had begun to worry they were not, and that her good intentions wouldn't succeed in resisting the temptations of power. The pawn shop owner who had tried to charge such an inflated price for Bloom Nocturne had caused Strife to believe his greed was inspired by a dislike of Tieflings. She wasn't completely sure, but his repeated comments about her look were fairly convincing, at least to one so often subjected to such prejudice. She felt entitled to her rage, but was she entitled to her response? Was it okay to simply use her magic to coerce the man into selling at the price she wanted to pay? Or did he have a right to hate who he wished? Though Strife wasn't sure what the answers should be, she was distraught that the questions only came to her after the deed was done. She hadn't even paused in the moment to act on her desire, to obtain her whim by a force ultimately provided by Dispater. And that truth made her sick.
She had felt she was drifting away from her moral core, slowly but surely. This new family she had forged such a bond with deserved so much better. Flowers, chocolate, a breathtaking tattoo, a huge pile of coin, all offered with love - and if Mercy had shadowed her for a time, that too was for a selfless purpose. Meanwhile, she was waylaid by her effort to buy her drug of choice, and then she got drunk.
If only she had somehow managed to confide in them, might things have turned out better? Could she have ever told Carrhae how jealous she was of her? The bitterness she felt to see a novice bard so quickly surpass her own talent, and without having done a devil's bidding, while Strife kept bungling all her efforts? When Strife's words kept betraying her, would Carrhae understand Strife wanted to attempt some wordless way to exert power, to feel important and capable, and that was why she had flirted with Savra? And when Savra disregarded this overture, would Carrhae grasp what it felt like to have sacrificed so much to obtain a power she couldn't seem to successfully wield? Carrhae had clarity of purpose, which was itself very attractive. She was a genuine heroine, destined to slay the manticore and win the ring, while Strife was embroiled in a struggle not to be small and petty.
What might have been, she would never know. It was time. She closed her eyes, and carefully invoked the unholy prayer she had heretofore never used, and was relieved to feel a sudden heaviness, a dark weight pressing upon her soul, and the omnipotent gravity of eternal corruption.
Your Most Eminent Sovereign Fell Majesty,
Your supplicant Infrakta doth beseech thee in this moment of dire need and humbly asks thine aid, that my love Carrhae shall escape this battle and safely return to Waterdeep, and find herself no worse physically than prior to our attack on this tower, and no worse mentally than her natural grief shall pain her, that she may do thereafter as she wills, and upon thy binding commitment to make that so, I do pledge and vouchsafe my eternal soul to thine service, to do with in thy Infernal wisdom as thou wilt.
As the momentary communion dissolved and her awareness of the ongoing maelstrom returned, Strife had no definitive sense of whether her offer would be accepted, only the disquieting impression of an archdevil's satisfied smirk. Though Strife desperately wanted to save all of the group, she knew too well the cost for such a momentous intervention was well beyond the market value of her rusty soul, and indeed Carrhae might prove too expensive, but the near certainty of harvesting the reward at any moment would sweeten the deal.
Strife noted that Merosska had finally summoned the courage to appear. She considered healing Carrhae as her last act, but she knew that gesture was futile, that the paladin's fate ultimately hinged on Dispater's whim. She had always been more inclined toward revenge, anyway.
"Carrhae, I am sorry you have been so unlucky in love, but you must go from here. Make them understand in Waterdeep. I have never asked you for anything, but I beg you to do this. You are a true hero, and you must fight on and avenge me, not martyr yourself. Know that I love you, for I have pledged my very greatest treasure to aid your escape. Farewell."

Carrhae turned towards Strife and was about to say how she would never abandon those she loved and how she would stand or fall beside the friends that she had made during this journey. But before the words could come out of her mouth, arcane bolts broke Strife's body and Carrhae saw the color fade from her love's eyes. She lets out an ear-piercing scream as she attacks Savra with everything that she has left.

Upon reaching the side of the tower featuring the draw bridge, Daewen climbs underneath the draw bridge and melts into the comforting gloom of the shadows underneath. Hearing the battle rage above her, and the whirling air vortices of the air elemental (her most sought after prey), she hatched an idea. Using her cloak, she casts Polymorph on herself and changes into a bat. (OOC: This transition...let’s just say for funsies that it gives her a voice box so she can speak.) Easily clinging to the bottom of the drawbridge, she yells up to the air elemental in *Primordial* (its primary language):
Welcome back to this plane, pretty one. I have called you here, ‘fore I am Prince Yan-C-Bin, Master of this Plane. I command you to tear this tower and it’s denziens apart, as an offering of sacrifice in my name, which they so desire. Do this, and I shall richly reward you beyond your wildest dreams, giving you secret access to the servants of Ogremoch and the Prince of Evil Earth himself.
Now, I command you to destroy those false worshippers standing next to you, and then those odious humanoids who are desecrating your air with their putrid flying beasts!
The Air Elemental sputters for a moment, as if it was having a crisis of commands, conflicted. It begins to start smashing the tower. Dae you better get the hell out from under that bridge.
Carrhae doesn't even notice the bolt coming towards her. Her attention is fully turned towards Zephyr, who falls after being struck by arcane bolts and Mercy, who is felled by an arrow. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." That's the last thing she says before Savra's bolt hits her and she falls unconscious next to the woman she loves.
As the Air elemental pounds on the tower, Merosska issues a command and the Elemental stops it's assault, and is banished. The combatants who remain alive take a moment to catch their breath.
"Savra" The Lord Commander says, taking off his armor. "Put out the fires." Savra nods, and starts casting spells to make them go out.
Merosska looks over the carnage. "Yan-C-Bin has blessed us this day. What were they thinking?" She grabs Strife and Mercy by the horns and starts dragging them towards the Spire. The knights drag Carrhae and Zephyr like bags of trash, following the Lord Commander. The initiate archer catches something out of the corner of his eye.
