A wretched. Basically, he somehow found himself in the clutches of... whoever the master is. The Wretched could smell the fear coming from the place planes away.
Hey, this is fun! It’s fun already before you even start it, trying to think of what you could be. Hope you decide to do it!
Ah, right. They don’t speak a language. I’d play it as more of a pet. That comic relief guy. Be a..... Barbarian? Maybe Rogue? I don’t know. It could be a scooby doo to the party, I guess. But not cowardly. Not at all.
Yeah but kenku can use their hands to draw pictures, or repeat the words of others to comunicate with their mimic ability. I mean I am not saying that the magic relic that essentially "awakened" each of you couldn't grant you some type of communication... either perhaps a form of crude telepethy of make some basic words out of your mouth. I mean you have a mouth so that is a start :P
on the other hand, how would this work? Like, could we make the race, add racial ability score improvements/decreases, and use point buy, or no?
That is exactly what I was thinking. Make the homebrew race with all the abilities of the monster including pluses and minuses to ability score and then use point buy.
So enough people seem interested that I Think I am going to try to get a game going... I am still going to leave this thread open for now to discuss ideas and stuff. I will try to get a recruitment thread open tomorrow that I will probably leave open over the weekend.
I was thinking of being a quasit, so I was gonna throw together a race, but I’m not sure how you mean for us to use the stats of the base monster. Like, if you had 17 in a stat on the base monster block, would you get a +7 racial bonus to that stat?
I was thinking the way it would work was if a monster has 17 strength.. that means they get a +3 to strength. So if you are making the homebrew race, give that race a +3 to strengh. If they have 6 int, that means they have a -2 to int so give them a minus 2 to int. Once you do that, you can use point buy so you can still make your normally dumb skeleton somewhat smart if you really want to dump the points into it lol.
Once you have the race all created, I would try to figure out how you want to distribute your points and then pick a class and background that would best reflect your character. If you have a skeleton or ghoul (something that used to be alive) then your backgrounds can be about anything you want. If you are a demon or something, try to think of tasks that you may have been asked to do by your master and pick a background closest to that.
I plan to make a recruitment thread today or tomorrow where I will ask people to submit their character names / races (monster) / and class. It would be awesome if people can make their own races so I don't have to do it but if I really like the idea and I think the player would be active I would be willing to do it for them.
What is your opinion on a hippogriff GM? That is my first choice for a race, second being a dread warrior if you have the content to look at it. Thank you.
I was kind of hoping for creatures that would normally be considered more evil (fiends, undead, aberrations, or like.. smoke and fire elementals). Hippogriphs are pretty awesome but they are kind of just a normal monster like a wolf or bear (granted... much cooler lol!) Have you concidered a [Tooltip Not Found] lol!
All that being said if you can come up with a nice backstory, I would consider a hippogriph if you were really keen on that one.
(Actually, I guess they are a monstrosity and not a beast... so yeah I would definitely be OK with one if you wanted to apply making one as a character)
I would like people to keep in mind though. You can apply with crazy scary wreched creatures, and I want that... but you will also have to be able to interract with people on occasion. So with that in mind... picking something like a hippogriph or ooze is cool, you arn't going to really be able to weild weapons... or toss on a cloak to enter a building in a sneaky way the way a ghoul, dread warrior, zombie, skeleton, cackler, quizet, or somethign else might.

Haven’t used this account in forever. Still a big fan of crawling claws.
Oh, if only you allowed Monstrosities. I had something planned, and then I re read the OP.
which one were you thinking?
A wretched. Basically, he somehow found himself in the clutches of... whoever the master is. The Wretched could smell the fear coming from the place planes away.

I just checked them out. Without arms or a way to talk it would be interesting to see how well it would work lol :P https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/the-wretched

And Kenku can’t talk either, so....

Yeah I guess.

Chitine or Harpy could also be decent monstrosities possibly
