So I was thinking about a new game idea where all the players have to pick a monster that is either a fiend, fire elemental, aberration, or undead that has a CR 1 or less. They would have to pick something that at least has an Int of 7 and needs to speak a language. The players would get all the abilities of that monster so depending on what they pick they may have multi-attack... flying.. spells... whatever. This is just a really really rough idea but I was thinking that the players are all creatures that in service to a greater demon that is of course... a giant dick. When players are sent by their master to destroy a raid a holy temple and destroy a relic, they all change the moment they nearly complete their task. The second they touch the holy relic their minds are clear and they are no longer slaves to their master. (they are all nuetral or good at this point but still monsters.. if a player picks a ghoul.. they are still going to want to eat dead people.. a dread warrior probably isn't going to immediatly start picking flowers and hugging puppies, and imp is still going to be a tricky sneaky jerk probably :D ) The holy power of the relic frees them of their servitude. Now... standing with a holy relic in a temple full of slaughtered clerics and demons... they must try to escape their previous lord who is enraged that his subjects are no longer under his control as well as flee from most sentient beings that would slaughter demons and undead on sight. They must stick together and build up enough strength to fight off their previous lord while also carving out a place and purpose for themselves in a world of the living where they do not belong...
This was an idea I was tossing around and I think it could be really neat... I would of course work with the players to figure out all the exact stats and how to make the player sheets but I am pretty flexible and I think it could be a lot of fun with the right group. Just trying to see if something like that would be interesting or not to players..
****This is not a game thread but I wouldn't mind it being a back and forth discussion of the idea if people have questions or are interested :D If enough people are interested I may be inclined to make it happen****
This sounds like a fun idea. Just a few questions if I could ask. Would we level into classes eventually, or just gain more supernatural powers as these creatures? And if we do, are we already those classes at the start of the game, or do we develop these skills as the game progresses?
Very interesting design, would love to go through the monster manual finding the perfect CR1 power house. Would we still have class levels or would it be a more short form campaign were we stay relatively the same in power besides armor and weapon augments.

I hadn't quite decided which is why I was wanting to discuss it a bit.
On one hand I am not opposed to charater levels... I mean I would want the characters to be able to get stronger and gain more abilities....
That being said, on the other hand I don't want them to just seem like a normal every day character with a different reskin. My thought was if a player decides to pick a ghoul... they are pretty weak for a cr1... but at the same time, the party would need to be able to communicate with townsfolk and buy armor and goods or whatever right... and so you could have a ghoul but slap some armor on him, get him some weapons... while also keeping his natural abilities. Instead of his claw attack being an action... why couldn't you treat it like a light weapon and use it with two weapon fighting? I would say you could... so you could have a ghoul that can attack with a short sword and his claws every round (the claw that could potentially paralize someone for a minute).... while also if you slap a helmet or hooded cloak on him.. could interract with townsfolk and almost act as "the face" for the party.
I mean, what is neat is that a lot of these creatures get dark vision... languages... flying... climbing... resistances... immunities... that could all be exploited to make them very powerful and I think there are a TON of oppertunities of great RP with a game like this. Personally I think a cackler would be a lot of fun, or a magmin... or a combination of them running around excitedly trying to fight the urge to burn everything to the ground while having neat abilities and traits that could make them stand out.
So a shadow doesn't have a language, but honestly I would be willing grant them a language in an appropriate type of voice (creepy whisper in this case) if the type of monster seemed like a nice fit for the game.
I would love to see this actually take place! Tell me when it starts recruiting an I’ll join instantly. Thinking avatar of death or something.... maybe a fighter Avatar of Death? That sounds like fun.
So It took me a while but I made a home brew cackler race just to see how hard it was. It took a bit because it had A LOT of special things going on with it and it would have let me make it public if it wasn't for one of the spells that it gets...
So I think the best way personally to do character creation would be to make a home brew race with the +'s and -'s to ability scores that the monster has... so a skeleton race would get +2 dex and +2 con but -1 wis and -3 charisma
and then add any immunities and valnrabilities and all that good stuff....
then once that is done, make a level 1 character using that homebrew race you created and make them a class that you think fits the type of monster you chose. (ghoul.... probably a fighter... imp... porbably a sorcerer or rogue?... that kind of thing)
does that make sense?
your thoughts?
this is all still just theory crafting, I don't have a fleshed out game yet, just trying to see about what it would take to put one together lol.

This is something I would be interested in playing in.
I could be interested in playing this.
I would be very interested, always love playing interesting campaign ideas like this ^w^

I used this race in another campaign that had this kind of theme in mind, we could all use it, but just narratively change it

Ok, i love this, this is awesome.
This is awesome. This sounds fun. I love it.
Sounds pretty cool.
Awesome! I would play, but I have no Character Slots. Still is cool, though.
Extended Signature! Yay! https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/off-topic/adohands-kitchen/3153-extended-signature-thread?page=2#c21
Haven’t used this account in forever. Still a big fan of crawling claws.

not sure what you all think.

Awesome, would love to play. When do we start? I'd love to play a Shadow.

Totally forgot about the language requirement. I'll find a new monster perhaps.

That makes sense. I'll probably create a Magma Mephit then...
