Khial braces for a cold impact as deadly icicles rush toward him. He has survived the long bitter cold nights in deserts during his past travels with nothing but the clothes of his back....and occasional sleeping inside a slain camel for warmth. But moments before the bitter frost touch his bare skin and face, he realizes this may hurt....a lot. "Winter is coming early"
Xel rushes to his companions who have just been hit by an icy attack. He will try to stabilise anyone who needs it - taking care of the dying/unconscious first.
Despite his attempt to dodge the cone of cold, Epos catches the full brunt of the icy attack; on the edge of the cone Khial fares better, though he still comes away with an arm covered in frost.
OOC: Epos takes 7 cold damage and Khial takes 4 cold damage. Tell me what your characters are doing now. The squares mentioned above are covered in ice and are considered difficult terrain.
Shivering to the bone and shaken, Epos takes a deep breath. He advances closer to the barrier [OOC: to J12] walking carefully over the iced over area . He tests the barrier with his quarter staff.
Tapping the barrier with his staff, Epos finds it is still there.
Xel spends another ten minutes chanting and casting his spell. Deep in concentration, he fails to notice the sound of leaves rustling and twigs cracking from the east, followed by silence. The Herr Doktor Professor heads off in that direction; when he returns, he reports that he found no sign of what made the sounds, but there appear to be some tracks on the ground.
After Xel finishes his spell, he notices that the magical barrier between the trees is still intact, and that the sigils carved on the trees now all emanate a black aura. Suddenly, he recalls a lesson from his teachers: evocation magicks, used in destructive spells that summon cold or fire, or in defensive spells that create walls of force, usually manifest a red aura when seen through Detect Magic.
OOC: I'm giving Xel the Arcana check as a freebie -- courtesy of seeing two party members blasted away by traps using evocation magic.
OOC: Xel will make an Arcana check - does the black aura mean the evocation magic has been expended - that touching the sigil will no longer trigger a spell?
Arcana Check: 22
Xel speaks in Elvish to his companions: "It seems that we are being watched. I feel that once we figure out this puzzle before us that our "friends" will reveal themselves. These may be part of the very group of goblins and hobgoblins that failed to breach the barrier earlier. Best be on your guard, especially since we are not at full strength. Can someone quietly fill in Khial since he may not understand the language of the Elves. I am worried that the forest has "ears" and is listening to everything we say."
Xel resumes trying to figure out the problem. Now that the sigils have been activated, why is the barrier still up?
Xel refers again to the parchment and tries to see if he missed anything from the poem which could help him in this case.
The Herr Doktor Professor tells Xel that he couldn't make out what made the tracks.
As Xel intuited earlier, the sigils probably have to be touched in a specific order to bring the barrier down. He also ascertains that some sort of magic is active with the sigils.

Khial looks at HDP with confusion, wondering what he just said. "Herr Doktor, you were you saying something?", he asked HDP with a normal volume.
Somehow Khial has this vague feeling, like someone.....or something is staring at him. Being trained by assassins way back in his earlier days, he instinctively makes a perception check: 21
At the same time, he draws his rapier, ready for a possible ambush.

Xel looks at the trees again. What is the pattern?
Xel tells Epos : "I am going to try to find out in what order to touch these sigils. Get ready to come to my aid since I am not entirely sure it is now safe to touch these sigils. I am going to touch the "cold" sigil tree so best be out of the cone's area of effect to be safe. I'll need you to save me if I am wrong."
Taking a deep breath and hoping the defensive magic has been discharged, he touches the sigil in K7.
"Shall we assume that "from left to right" is a direction related instruction? Or if that seems too easy, and relating the left to right to the relative strength of the chromatic dragon each tree seems to represent then "from left to right" should be in terms of weakest to strongest - thus white, black, green, blue, red."
OOC: Can I double check if that's correct - Arcana Check: 18, Nature Check: 23, Intelligence Check: 5
OOC: If nothing happens (and monitoring the aura of the barrier) Xel will proceed to touch the sigils this order - H8 (acid), L9 (poison), K7 (lightning), and finally I11(fire). At each sigil he will ask both Epos and Khial to be close in the event that something terrible befalls Xel. Xel instructs them to be out of direct sight of where Xel believes the magical attack will come from.

Epos calls out to Xel: "Xel, with your magic eyes, what do you see?"
Xel stands up straight from behind the rock he was behind.
Xel replies "Unfortunately my spell has worn off. I will need to cast it again to see if our fortunes have turned."
Xel will cast [/Detect Magic] again on himself.
Xel once again incants the spell to give him magical sight.
