The smell of death is overwhelming as you approach the livestock barn. The doors to the large structure, painted a traditional red, are ajar, and flies are swarming about. Taking a peek inside – carnage. The corpses of several horses lay about upon the dirt and hay within, all appearing surprisingly decomposed given their recent demise. At a distance, the carcasses appear to have large wounds along their flanks, but a closer look will be required for any proper inspection.
Hari and Dathyra
You find a trail of blood leading through a broken bit of pasture fence and continuing on to a game trail in the adjacent Northwood. Your investigation suggests that several bipedal creatures were dragging cow corpses northward.
Sen has no issue getting dirty inside this pile of gore. "Sure seems like these things have been dead for much longer than we were told. Either that or possibly some dark forces are at play here." Sen moves in with Merrric attempting to discern more about what happened.
Merric calls out to the others in the field that he and Sen are moving to investigate the barn.
As Merric and Sen make their way into the barn to investigate the large wounds along the flanks of three horses, a form rises up off of the floor. What was once decomposing gore has taken some semblance of shape and form. It produces four appendages that strike out at the two explorers.
Dathyra pondered the evidence she and Harivaldr had found. Trails of blood were never a good sign, and they usually only lead to more trouble. Furthermore, her fears were confirmed that there were several someones involved in this issue, meaning it could be possible for the group to be in over their heads. If this indeed was the work of a whole band of orcs or another as yet unidentified group, they could easily be outnumbered. Still, it was something to go on.
"We at least know what direction they are headed," she said to Harivaldr, nodding in the direction of the blood. "Or at the very least, we know one direction they went. It's a start anyway. Harivaldr, I fear that we may find several adversaries responsible, perhaps more than we number. I think if we are to proceed any further, we'll need a plan, one better than our improvised performance up until now."
She was about to muse on this further when she heard a scream coming from the barn. Hadn't Sen and Merric gone to check there? One of two things had probably happened. The two of them had found trouble or they were about to be in trouble. Either way, it wasn't a good sign. She hardly waited for the dwarf's response before dashing for the barn door. She stopped in her tracks when she saw several squirming appendages striking her friends. Instinctively, she grabbed her crossbow.

Harivaldr nodded to his companion, with all that they'd found, it was obvious that their little band needed to be much more careful going forward. Something felt off, here, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it... "Aye, we should probably have the townsfolk set up some sort of watch before we-" The scream from the barn cut him off. "The barn, let's go!" And with that, the stocky dwarf took off after his taller elven friend, drawing his longsword as he ran. Once he caught sight of the... things striking out at Sen and Merric, he couldn't help but exclaim, "Gods a- what in the hells is that!"
Because I neglected to say how far away from the barn you were when you heard the scream, I'm going to say that it take you at least 6 seconds to double dash that far. You will enter in the next round of combat.
As the first appendage strikes out at Merric, he deflects some of the force of the blow to the side with the torch [uncanny dodge], sparks and embers flying as he narrowly avoids a more painful strike. He is helpless as the other appendage swipes in for a second attack.
Drawing his shortsword, he dances forward and drives the weapon into the mass of the strange creature. Attack: 17 Damage: 17
[5 damage + 12 sneak attack damage if applicable]
"Get it Sen...get it!!" he calls out, trying his best to distract the strange thing so Sen can get a good shot in. "DATHY! HARI! HELP!!" he screams out.
Merric avoided some of the first blow but the second appendage wallops him across the shoulder blades. He slashes at the decomposing hulk. It makes a wheezing shriek of putrification. [Sneak attack seemed to get through!] The Rot Fungus swings wildly at both Merric and Sen.
Merric: Attack 19 Damage 3
Merric: Attack 7 Damage 2
Sen: Attack 23 Damage 5
Sen: Attack 23 Damage 4
[Sen is up.]
[Then next round Dathyra and Hari arrive. They will attack after the fungus before Sen]
Sen leaps back with the grace of a cat and strikes out with a cracking whip. It slices into the appendage and another shudder goes through the creature. It is taking damage and pieces of it are starting to slough off.
The barn door slams open and Dathyra and Harivaldr burst into the livestock pen. Their reaction is a bit delayed because they were running across the field, but now the stench and decay hits them. They pause a moment to wrap their minds around what it is their friends are fighting. About 8 feet in height and 10 ft across with appendages that look like clubs waving around, a mass of decomposition and rot seems to have taken form and is trying to kill Sen and Merric.
Merric calls out to the others, relief obvious in his voice..."Thankin' Brandobaris you's getting here!! I'll try distract the thing...gets rid o' it fast!!"
Merric dances around the creature, waving his torch and trying to keep the creatures attention and using Dodge to avoid being hit.
As he prepares himself for the fight to come, Harivaldr can't help but retch when the awful sight and stench of the beast in the barn. Whatever the hells this thing was, he seriously doubted it was tied to orcs, or at least, none that he'd seen. Spitting out a glob of saliva tinged with vomit, he began to whisper words infused with dissonant magic at the filthy thing. "Flýðu óhreinum skepnu..." Once the spell was finished, he turned to his halfling ally and shouted words of encouragement, "Hold fast, Merric! Our legends do not end here!"
The Rot Fungus does not seem to flinch or respond to Harivaldr's hissed threatening whisper. Merric seems to feel himself bolstered and encouraged by Hari's words.
The looming monstrosity in the barn senses that there are new targets and lashes out in all directions.
