The party fails to remember any such story of this particular siege but Duc recognizes the armor. It's from the newly born Empire. Two hundred years before during the current Emperor's great-grandfather's reign, the human man was known as Aurelien the Merciless!
"Yes," Gimble replied to Retiog's question. "Only trouble is we've got to choose either right or left," he adds. "That's all I've got written now on the map," he offers it up.
The map is blood-spattered with a burnt corner. It's been through something you're sure!
Retiog bends down to a knee and and examines the footprints - like a hunter checking the tracks of their prey. He passes a finger through one of prints. "It has been some time since these were made," he says rubbing his thumb and finger together. "Maybe we should make our own path?"
Alici nods her agreement. "Lead the way, but be wary. Gimble said that now is the time to keep an eye open for traps, and if the footprints go in but don't return... well..."

Nat makes sure to point out the two sets of footprints to the others, as they will probably do better identifying them that he will, but he gives it a go:
I think it might have been a goblin standing on a crab. Or possibly three kobolds in a trench coat. He shrugs and grins. I have no idea what passed this way. Can you see better than me? Still, they entered and didn't come out, so I vote for taking the right-hand passage.
Nat can't tell what made the tracks just they only go in one direction.
"Right it is then," Gimble replies moving ahead of the party once more searching the darkened corridor. "Watch out everyone," he adds moving into the dark as the same carved stone walls around them as they move. "It's a gemstone," he then says unprompted. "I don't have a clue what it does but its a gemstone. That's what we're looking for," Gimble explains. "A great black gemstone," he adds.
Moving into the corridor the party are met with a large staircase down. Gimble seems to search as they move before holding up a hand to the party and moving ahead again. It takes another half an hour of searching before the party stops outside to large towering doors 30ft high and 20ft wide ornately carved with a drow woman standing in front of the full moon holding a longsword loft.

"Agreed, I'm not overly fond of being underground. Give me clear blue sky any day." Alici says, hunkering low with her shield raised, eyes scanning the room for hiding places and potential pit falls.
Nat smiles. Or a beautiful moonlit sky, above a bustling city at night. He stands in front of the drow woman, not too close, and investigates what he sees, particularly whether the image shows her holding or wearing a large, black gem. An image of a drow, in a temple to nature. That's... interesting.
Alici notices the landing around the doors has no other openings. It's the stairs behind and the closed doors ahead.
"You know what exactly about drow culture," Gimble asks with a smirk at Nat. "The temple is to Eilistraee. She is a lover of beauty and peace but is not averse to striking back against those who would harm her followers. She serves those of the drow race who wished to live in the realms above in peace," he explains.
Nat does not notice a large gem stone.

While waiting, the barbarian begins to pace - like a dog waiting to be let off his chain. He readies his weapons at the genasi's concern. "This is too much sneaking around for my tastes." He bangs his weapons together and grunts. "Do we need to knock or something?"
Cold and mildly disturbed by the dark, as well as by the beautiful and dangerous looking statue before her, Alici feels an anxious urge to move to action. She looks at Gimble, and then around at the party, and as Retiog mentions knocking on the door it prompts her to speak.
"Well, why don't we just try them?" Alici looks at the doors giving them a once over to see if they might be trapped, then tries them gently, doing her best to open them slowly and quietly.
As Alici comes forward, Nat steps back and away from the doors to allow her to push them open, if she can. He looks warily around, half-expecting a pit to open beneath them any moment.
Alici tries but the doors won't budge an inch but they do not trigger a trap.
"I think it's more like a lever or something," Gimble speaks up looking at the doors scratching his stumbled chin. "Help me find it," he adds looking around the doors.
Investigation anyone? Aided you can roll with advantage!

Right or left? Nat takes the map and scrutinises it, before handing it on to whoever else wants to take a look.
He then looks at the right passage and then left, trying to notice anything that suggests which is the better option.
Investigation 9
Nat notices tracks down the left but nothing in the dust on the right. The tracks ate faint but they are there. It looks like two distinctive sets.
Sometimes a Nat 1 tells a better story than a Nat 20 ever could.
Well, there's two sets of tracks headed down this way, Nat thumbs to the left, and none the other way. So, left, I guess? That's if we want to follow.
(Are the tracks two-way? Did someone enter but not leave by this path?)
Retiog bends down to a knee and and examines the footprints - like a hunter checking the tracks of their prey. He passes a finger through one of prints. "It has been some time since these were made," he says rubbing his thumb and finger together. "Maybe we should make our own path?"

"Duc any ideas? Right or left," Gimble looks over the party holding his hand out for the map.
Nat could see directions but the map's language was an odd mix of thieves cant and something else he couldn't read!

(Do the footprints go in and not come out? Or is Nat not able to see that kind of detail?)
Yes. Two sets going in and none coming out.
Survival to see what/who made them.
