Callan certainly doesn't look thrilled about the stench either. He looks down at Circe, not without sympathy. "I won't make you go, but I think we could use your help here. I won't be able to get you that pigeon if I never manage to find my way back out."
Later, when they encounter the strange creature, Callan calls out, "Gazer! Watch out for its..." He trails off as he shakes off some kind of mental effect, watching Hugo go flying, "Yeah, that. Just hit the thing before it does more!"

As the team follows the path and Circe protests foul odor Hugo wiggles his fingers under the cat's nose and whispers words in Elvish to conjure smells of crisp night air, fresh fish, the salty sea and fresh herbs. "Sorry friend, I can't make this last. We'll all just have to suffer this place."
When they encounter the tiny beholder creature, Hugo is knocked prone but gets back to his feet and takes cover behind Renaer. Frantically trying to decide what to do the bard remembers some of the more dangerous magic he had recently inherited but had only toyed with once. Nervously he raises his hand, squints a little and mutters a word in Sylvan as powerful crackling force energy erupts from his hand and arcs erratically towards this new foe.

Zyllee looks in grave concern at the odd creature. Not having much in her arsenal now she gestures towards the creature. A bell begins tolling for the creature.
Renaer dashes forward to meet the creature, moving with surprisingly great agility and speed. He stabs at the creature twice with his rapier, landing one blow right above it's central eye. Then, he uses his dagger to go in for a third strike, this time cutting one of the creatures eye stalks completely off.
Callan releases a bolt, but it misses as it clatters against a wall. Simultaneous castings of Zyllee's death bell along with Hugo's force blast finish off the strange creature. It falls to the ground with a squish noise.
Renaer turns to the party and says, "Well done, let's keep following the trail."
---
After 5 more minutes of following the trail, you think you find the place you've been looking for. You begin slogging through 1-foot-deep water and sewage in the main sewer tunnel. Eventually, the tunnel itself expands into a circular hub with a pair of arrow slits carved into its outer walls, directly across from each other. Two passages continue on to the north and south and a stone door is set into the back wall of a stone ledge to the west. Renaer is staying several paces behind with the light source as he lets the three of you with darkvision scout on ahead a bit.
Zyllee, up ahead you think you hear snoring coming from the arrow slits, a pair of goblin sentries. Stealth checks from everyone please. Here's a view of the map that you can see:
Zyllee tenses up as she hears snoring ahead of them. She motions for them to go back down the tunnel a short distance. Speaking very softly she says, " There are two arrow slits up ahead. I hear snoring from behind them. We should be okay if we are quiet. There is also a stone door on the left path just past the arrow slits. I feel it's worth looking into. Is anyone having any difficulty being quiet in here? I can help one person if that is the case. " She will put her hand on the shoulder of whoever needs help and grant them the blessing of the trickster. She will use it on herself if no-one needs it. Zyllee will then sneak forward to the stone door. "
Blessing of the trickster grants advantage on stealth checks. I will roll with advantage myself in case no-one takes the assistance. If someone does then please ignore the second number.
Callan is feeling rather miserable right now. He's put nearly every bit of his gear in his magic pouch and sealed it off, but everything else he has is getting soaked in unmentionable substances. After all, the others are merely knee deep in this, its up past his waist. He's holding his crossbow up so the string doesn't get soaked and stretch. At least Circe is able to fly over this mess.
He talks as they move along, trying to keep his mind off what he's seeing practically in his face, "So yeah, remember the stuffed beholder we saw before? That thing we just fought was a gazer, they're related in a sense. Beholders are bigger, tougher, and do much nastier things with their eye rays. What worries me is if there are gazers around, there's probably a true eye tyrant somewhere around here. If you see it, don't bother doing anything but running."
Later, he starts muttering to himself about inventing ways to fix the issue he's currently facing, ranging from personal floatation devices, to implementing sewage disposal systems that don't involve pools of filth. "Lets see, permanent magic portals a few inches wide could drain these areas neatly enough, should be able to separate the waste in transit. It can go to a plant to produce uric acid and fertilizer to eventually pay off the enchanting costs. Hmm, how much would that stuff sell for though, especially when the market reacts to the new source? It could take a long time to recoup the costs, and I doubt I could get a loan with favorable terms under the circumstances... Hmm, maybe work with the alchemists instead, use the waste to produce nitrogen and salt petrae for that exploding powder I've been hearing about... Oh, but wait, how on earth will we keep people from stealing the components for the portals? Hmm..."
He shuts up when they near the intersection, and nods as Zylee reports the sentries. Not saying anything, he moves forward as quietly as he can manage under the circumstances.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As Zyllee and Hugo finish off the gazer with their destructive magic Hugo's eyes are wide with a bit of surprise and he turns and smiles at his friend. "Whoa, I had only practiced with that a little. I didn't want to hurt anyone, but that thing, ewwww!" "Bigger and nastier you say Callan? Maximillian does not flee from such foes! They flee from him, if they are wise!" After a pause he adds "totally kidding, you'll be yelling for me to wait up for you!"
Hugo is equally disgusted by the filth they have to trudge through on their quest. "Remind me which one of you decided we should do this? You owe me new clothes." He makes ample use of prestidigitation to continually clean off his clothing but the task is rather futile, at least until they are out of the sewage.
As Zyllee reports on the sleeping guards, Hugo is happy to accept her aid in sneaking past. "I have to move through this...mess... and be quiet? Yes I will absolutely accept assistance."
The four of you and Circe make your way stealthily past the two napping goblin sentries. Upon reaching the door, Zyllee notices that it is neither trapped nor locked. Going through eventually leads to an intersection to the left and right. To the right is one of the watch-post rooms, where you heard one of the goblins napping. You can still hear light snoring coming from that direction. To the left is a messy looking room with rusty weapons and clothes scattered all over the floor.
Callan pantomimes whacking himself over the head, then points at the nearby sleeping goblin with a questioning look. Surely they'd be safer if sure the sentry's sleep will last regardless of noise made.
Zyllee looks down with distaste upon the water she wades through. She must keep her hair clear of the water. It would be horrible trying to clean this filth out of it
Snapping back to their problem she considers Callan' s proposal. It made sense but she didnt want to kill the goblins unless they had to. She nods reluctantly at the gnome.
Hugo hears Callan and quietly points to himself and shakes his head to indicate it probably shouldn't be him, either. He instead looks to their brawny new friend to perhaps take care of the task. Hugo silently offers to hold the torch so that bright light does not wake their target but there is still enough light for Renaer to work. The bard considers using his Sleep spell if this goes poorly but decides it's a bit too soon to conjure up the magic and risk wasting it.
Renaer nods to the group and moves forward as silently as he can to knock out the sleeping sentry. With the hilt of his rapier, he bashes the sleeping goblin in the back of the head. It opens its eyes in shock briefly before going unconscious.
The four of you briefly search the room to the left, but find nothing of any value other than threadbare clothing and rusty weapons. As you move forward, you enter a room that appears to be an empty sleeping area containing six tattered, straw-stuffed mattresses and nothing of value. However, as you approach the door leading to the next room, you hear two people talking through the door. There's also the sound of heavy things sliding around or being dragged across the floor on the far side of the next room.
"No, no, that's not enough you idiot! We need to cover underneath the door too. Grab some blankets and stuff them to block the crack under the door!" one familiar, gruff sounding voice says.
The other, unfamiliar voice grunts, then replies, "You think this will be enough? What if it gets out?"
Callan looks to the door and then to the others, shrugging. He doesn't like the sound of whatever the others are trying to block, but it doesn't look like they have any other options at present in terms of where to go. He tries to pantomime waiting and listening for a little longer to try and figure out what's going on in there.
The unfamiliar voice says, "Say Krentz, what the hell is that thing anyway? I couldn't even make out who we lost. All I saw was small skeletons floating in it."
"Krentz" replies, "It's some sort of ooze you idiot! How do you not know this? This is COMMON knowledge, especially among your own kind Zemk. Did they not teach you anything down there? Listen, they can fit through any small cracks and holes, so make sure to plug everything up until we can figure out how to get rid of it."
Hugo nods at Callan and drops down low to look under the door they are at. He assumes these guys are trying to block a different door and wonders why they don't just flee in the direction of the party. He whispers to his friends "why is that voice so familiar?"
Zyllee listens intently to the voices in the other room. Hearing that they are distracted she mouths to the others, " Let's go in while they are worried about something else. " She nods towards the door with a questioning look on her face.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Callan nods in agreement, and hefts his crossbow to signal his readiness. He'll hug the right hand wall as he prepares to fire into the next room from behind whoever goes first.
The four of you enter the room quickly, hoping to catch the two by surprise while they bicker. It works.
As you enter, you see a similar room to the previous one you were in. It contains six tattered, straw-stuffed mattresses and two men standing in front of a door with piled up furniture blocking it. One of the men is a grey-skinned dwarf that you have never seen before. But the other is immediately recognizable. He was the human man with eye tattoos on his shaved head who fought Yagra at the Yawning portal along with four other men.
Renaer dashes forward to engage head on with the human man first.
Actions please. I rolled initiative for Hugo and Zyllee. The bad guys go first but you all do get a surprise round.
"Hey! It's you!" Hugo thinks for a fraction of a second and continues "since I know you don't like a fair fight you should yield now, coward!" He calls upon not only his acting skills to persuade the man to give up before the fight really even starts but drives the point home with a bit of magic to cripple the many-eyed man's mind.
Zyllee decides to act quickly before more enemies might arrive. Seeing the dwarf she chants quickly and gestures at him. He is bothered by the sound of a far off bell.
She casts toll the dead. DC 13 wisdom save negates the damage. D8 damage if target is full on hitpoints. D12 if target is not full on hitpoints.
