'Going through the woods will keep us away from the towns and minimize any contact with people - but would add about 5 hours of walking time to the trip. In practical terms that's about a day's worth of walking. While the route is shorter - walking up the coast could actually take longer - especially if any of the towns we run into have barricaded themselves and we have to talk - or even fight - our way through.' George points at the map all along the route with the tip of his bowstave to emphasize his point - counting off the 8 separate towns along the coastal route before they make the Eastward jog towards Portland.
'Of course, we could find help and information in any of those towns as well - it's a gamble either way.'
“What about a water route? A few small boats could paddle up the coastline and avoid all the towns, anchoring them off shore or making a scuttle plug to prevent anyone using them. Then walking the inland route?” Pointing at the map he indicates Tilamook Bay. “There’s a small river we could head up without any known towns, and then follow highway 6 until it’s just North of the destination. “
“Can you tell me the difference between a witch and a wizard?" "Sure, a wizard is what they call you when they want to hire you, and a witch is what they call you when they're getting ready to run you out of town.” SunWolf replied ― Barbara Hambly, The Witches of Wenshar

Not a terrible idea - but we'd have to leave the horses behind once we left the boats - that'll slow us down a bit - but it also won't risk any of the horses.'
With a visible rise of pride as his vessel is mentioned, Tom says “Sheila’s able to carry a good dozen people and gear for diving, probably the same with all this Medieval cutlery. I can sail her just over the horizon if you want stealth, coming in fast with the right tide to the bay. All the waters near civilization are clear of snags and such, so unless something has been put in the water at the bays mouth, we could come in under dark cover. This early after this Change I doubt anyone is actively defending water routes. She’s a shallow craft, so we could make a long ways up the Wilson river there before I’d scuttle her into the mud enough to discourage use. It wouldn’t take more than an hour to drain the water when we return, since the hand pumps are all Archimedes screws. It’d be shanks mare for the last bit, but probably safer. If the river works out far enough, the map shows it going all the way to Gales Creek, but I would stop at this bend here (he indicates a point just South of Jordan's Creek) and go straight east, if the terrain is doable. Should be good hunting and no civilization to worry about. “

George nods his head thoughtfully.
How many people can fit on that boat of yours?
There are a lot of books (100 hardbacks), without the horses you’re going to have trouble.
DM Edit: Okay, I’ve just found what you’re talking about on the map. You can probably get to within 10 miles of your destination. Say 200kg of books, it looks doable.
'We'd have to plan for an additional 200kg (400lbs) of books on the return trip and a way to get them back overland the 10 miles back to the boat. That means each of us hauling about 30kg (40lbs) for a full days hard hike to get back to the boat. We could get lucky and find some wheelbarrows up there - but I don't like counting on the kindness of the fates.'
George thinks for a couple more minutes.
'I like this plan. Minimizes our exposure minimizes the risks involved and gives us the best chance of getting these books back here. We lose the value of reconing the forest and the surrounding area - but we can always do that once the books are secured.'
"Thanks for trusting me with the decision, George, but honestly I'm fine with whatever you decide, as long as it's not impossible to do". Juliette thinks for a bit, looking over the plan in her head. After she's decided it's probably better than whatever she could come up with due to her limited knoledge of the location, she agrees.
"That plan sounds great to me. If it's fine with everyone, why don't we try it!"
Uthvern nods, "I'm fine with that. If something happens I can always carry someone else's load and they can do checking ahead. Better safe than sorry. We heading out now?"
Ooc: do we imply any of us has already prepared or been offered enough food, etc etc summing up to the so called adventure gear or adventurer pack? I mean we will a tent bla bla bla, the list is long

The town will supply food, camping gear, canoes (I the DM know nothing about canoes - how many can you take on Tom's boat - how much weight can they carry - how many people etc) police body armour (not enough time to have made chain but there are a couple of sets of scale) weapons.
OOC - You could reasonably carry three or four canoes max on a cruising catamaran, but they aren't needed for the plan. Typical ocean going catamarans can carry 2,000 KGs of weight beyond operational needs (generators, water tanks, etc.) Here's a probable style he would have stolen.. I mean 'acquired'! https://vancouver.craigslist.org/van/boa/d/vancouver-prout-quasar-50-cruising/6917615952.html

Okay, it looks like you can come up the river and park in the Tillamook State Forest. A two day walk to get to Cherry Grove. Two days back. Would you come in from the ocean into the river at night to avoid being spotted by the locals? I don't know how dangerous that would be.
On the other hand if you brought bicycles with you
George 'Bikes would be a good idea - they are faster than horses over distance - and they'll work great for portage on the way back. Can the town spare enough for the party?'
George 'Bikes would be a good idea - they are faster than horses over distance - and they'll work great for portage on the way back. Can the town spare enough for the party?'
No problem. This is tourist town and there is a bike rental place.
Prepping the boat doesn’t take too long, as Thomas shows his skill with the familiar tasks of rigging the new sail and aiding the stowing of the gear and bicycles. Once every one is aboard, he casts off the dock and the group makes their way out over the horizon.
OOC - any concerns for the weather? The plan is to be off the coast until night starts to fall and sail enough to see the bay entrance then head toward it in the dark.

The weather is mild as you sail north up the coast, you reach your spot and wait for night to approach. While waiting someone notices further out to sea a large container ship sitting still. The crew must have managed to drop anchor as it is not drifting free.
George - 'Tom - how hard would it be to approach that Container ship? It could literally be a floating gold mine - even if it's just full of dog food!'
Uthvern looks at it, "Could be. Still, there are also possibilities that they have crew aboard. They might not know what happened." He shrugs, "Could go see if they know anything, or as George says, see what goodies are there."
