George show's his hosts the Ghillie cloaks he's made for the Merry Little Band of Mischief Makers. Simple enough in design that they can be adapted for any environment, and light enough that carrying/wearing them doesn't slow scouts or travelers much.
All in all it seems like a fair trade for a night off the road, some hot food and intel about the road ahead. Over dinner that evening, George sketches a couple of options on the map spread out in front of the party:
'Seems like we have two choices - Apache or Cartel. My vote is the Apache. They may not like paleskins, but my guess is they are at the least the lesser of two evils and at best a fierce ally waiting to be harnassed. Either way it would be good to remember the Pre-Change history of these lands - Mexicans and Native Americans alike have reason to be suspicious of outsiders promising peace and cooperation. We should be very clear that we are not on a scouting mission and that we have no intention of returning without an explicit invitation. I think if we explain Sarah's predicament here it might be our best bet'
As he finishes, he looks around the table to see what the rest of the crew think of his suggested approach.
"I have always been intrigued by the Apache," Aleister says. "They have a reputation, historically, as the fiercest light infantry in the world; though how well their traditions have survived I do not know." He grins broadly, "I say let's go meet them, I imagine if we also mention that we're opposed to the cartel thugs, as well as looking for Sarah's family, they might be a bit more welcoming, if they are welcoming at all that is."

Thomas agreed with George. “While the native bands have been treated bad by history, they used to be an honorable people. I’d expect that, now that they have serious power in the world again, they’ve brought back the old morals. “

“Can you tell me the difference between a witch and a wizard?" "Sure, a wizard is what they call you when they want to hire you, and a witch is what they call you when they're getting ready to run you out of town.” SunWolf replied ― Barbara Hambly, The Witches of Wenshar
Uthvern agrees as well, "Apache would be a better idea than the cartel. I'd rather make deals with people who would most likely keep their word, instead of stabbing you in the back and hold shit dangerously like the cartel might do."
Your hosts in Yuma give you some names to mention when you get to Phoenix. They have good relations and there is a joint protection pact between the two cities.
Day 3 1064
A peaceful days travel.
Day 4 482
You get to the Phoenix check points around midday and using the contact names get into the city without any undue problems. Do you want to continue on or spend some time here?
Day 5 135 Day 6 876 Day 7 6108 Day 8 116 Day 9 261 Day 10 711
"Think there might be anything worth trading for? I could barter some arrows, I suppose. Maybe see if we can find any magic users?" Sarah asks her companions. "Actually, I wouldn't mind bartering for one of those cloaks like yours, George."
While she speaks, she takes in the city to see if there is anything interesting, how stable it might be and so on.
Regardless of what the group decides, Thomas will make contact with the local mage's guild or users, if any. If there are none, he will try and locate suitable candidates and teach what he can, while they remain. If there are any prospects, he will invite them - when they can- to Yachats for training and education at the Wizard's School. After that, as time allows, he will research available resources for new magics.

While in Phoenix Aleister will find anyone who might make white Lightening; if he cannot find such he will find some who are interested. Flammable liquids are always of interest, but not necessarily for the offensive damage they might cause. Chatting up the locals all the while, learning as much as he can about the local fauna and flora, with emphasis on beneficial and malevolent sorts of stuff. Investigation 3 Perception 23 Persuasion 7
When all is said and done, he says, "Let's git them doggies movin', rawhide!"
George will gladly make Sarah up a Ghillie Cloak (advantage on stealth rolls) while they camp each night after she mentions it.
'If you're traveling with us, you should have one of these and know how to use it and adapt to the terrain as we travel'
He'll work her on some of the simple drills the Mayor's Own teach young recruits to learn to read the terrain, adjust their cloaks and hide in plain sight.

Aleister will make up some simple mock fire_,oleander_, poison-oak bombs and practice using 'Produce Flame' to ignite the fuse as he throws the 'bomb'. Hopefully he will become fairly good at it by the time it becomes necessary to use them on some miscreant thug.
He will look for some scorpions to milk as well. Nature 20

It’s a thriving 18th century town. Well maintained and orderly. You see some people getting thrown out of a drinking establishment but they take it in good humour and head back to their lodging. You see and actual newspaper... remember those, called The Rumour Mill. The town has its own currency, minted coins but they will take trade.

People know about magic but there’s no organisation of Wizards or whatever. You find one guy who’s willing to trade spells. He has Continual Flame
Sarah decides she'll check the Rumor Mill for just that- rumors. Particularly for anything to do with local news, the dangers on the road and hopefully what might have happened to her family after leaving Truth and Consequences. She'll also talk to locals and listen around for rumors as she checks the local shops/market.

The newspaper talks about a lot of people and places that mean nothing to you but there is a 'foreign affairs' section. The war for El Paso is going badly for the locals and cartel troops were closing in on Ciudad Juarez (the other side of the Rio Grande from El Paso). The Americans are helping their southern brothers.
There are continuing stories about strange goings on in Truth or Consequence. Talk is that something in the DARPA facility nearby was released by the change. From the story you know that T or C has not been abandoned and that the article writer doesn't take all these campfire stories seriously. It seems to be a running joke in the paper.
Sarah breathes a sigh of relief that her granny might not have been forced from her home. She decides to take the newspaper to show the others. All the better to now walk into a war.
Uthvern will seek others who take part in entertainment. Watching them before introducing himself and his skillset, I guess trying to see if anyone would be interested in musical skills of the flute or just in need of manpower I guess.
