As you peer over the side, you see your enemies for the first time. None of them look particularly familiar at first...as you focus, though, you realize the leader does look vaguely familiar. And then you see it. The distinctive red and black symbol adorning his garb and his shield. You haven't seen it for awhile, but it's unmistakable.
You can make a ranged attack. The big, brutish looking guy is climbing up the side of the ship, about 10-15 feet beneath you. All the others are on the docks, about 30 beneath you.
Brask grabs a handaxe and casually tosses it towards the brute climbing the side of the ship:
Attack: 18 Damage: 10
But his attention is focused on the leader, the man in red and black. Not wearing a mask but... the colours. Does his physique look the same? Does the voice sound familiar? And what's the quickest way for Brask to get his maul onto that skull?
The handaxe spins wildly, slamming into the burly slaver's head blade-first, chopping off an ear and some of his cheek. "Arggghhh! I'm going to pull all your hair out before I f*cking kill you." He reaches up for the next window.
Brask, the leader is clearly a human - not the elf that you would have recognized much sooner. But the red-and-black closely matches the mask you've had burned into your memory. It's no coincidence.
Effort points her finger at the Archer, chiding him for the hit with a hellish rebuke. Dex 13 for half damage on 12
Effort, grunting from the impact of the second arrow, loses her concentration. She glares furiously, and hexes the archer once more, before eldritch blasting him.
Attack: 20 Damage: 6 force + 3 necrotic
Then she moves to further away from the ballista and the railing, going for any cover she can find near the rear end of the ship.
(If for some reason the archer would have died from the hellish rebuke, the attack would then go to the leader)
The archer panics as the flames engulf him, singing his clothes and his exposed skin. He looks terribly weak at this point, and the blast from Effort connects squarely with his chest, sending him flopping backward onto the dock. He doesn't move again.
The two grunts both leap from the dock onto the side of the ship.
Dex check 1: 2
Dex check 2: 7
Both bandits manage to hang onto the sides and begin climbing up the windows. The brute finally reaches the railing. He moves surprisingly smoothly for such a big guy, rolling over the railing and coming down with his maul on Brask. He repeats the attack, bringing down the maul again.
Attack: 14 Damage: 4
Attack: 24 Damage: 12
Cadmael is up - I assume granting advantage to someone. Then Burik. Burik - the thug is now in the area where your ballista is pointing, but so is Brask. You have two options. You can err on the safe side, attacking with disadvantage and making sure you don't hit Brask. Or you can shoot normally, with an attack of less than 5 accidentally hitting Brask.
In that case, Burik can roll with advantage on the Brute (but an attack of less than 5 still hits Brask) or roll regularly and Brask won't be in danger of being hit.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The arrow from Burik's ballista slams into the back of the hulking man. He coughs, spurting a little blood on Brask's fur. He stumbles a bit, but regains his footing just in time to turn and see Burik's warhammer coming at his head. It's the last thing he ever sees.
Murmur looks over the side and shoots a red-hot flame at one of the grunts climbing up the side. Attack: 19 Damage: 6 The flames pour over one of them, burning them as they scream and struggle to hold on.
As this is happening, the leader backs away, looking up and surveying the group of you fighting on the side of the ship. "Bah! This won't be the last you've seen of us!" He turns and heads in the opposite direction. [Dash]
The two grunts look back, horrified that their leader has left them, and their two other companions are now dead. Pip steps up, leaning over the side a bit, and swings his scimitar down on the one who has made the most progress climbing...
Attack: 5 Damage: 4
It's still a bit too far to reach, and his blade only chips a piece of wood off the side of the ship.
"Wait...wait! We surrender! Mercy!" One calls out.
How far away is the leader from Brask? How many feet of movement would he need to make to reach him? He potentially can do 90 feet in a single round, with an action surge.
He's about 60-70 feet away from the ship at this point. You're ~30 feet up. Climbing down wouldn't get you there fast enough, and you could jump down, but you'd land prone if you took any damage (1d6 per 10 ft).
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(Eldritch Blast has a range of 120 feet. Hex has a range of 90 feet. Even with him dashing for 60, Effort should be able to Hex and Blast the leader, so…)
Effort, seeing the brute fall and that the others seem to have garnered the surrender of the two minions, rushes to the edge of the boat. Spotting the fleeing leader - and Brask foolishly trying to chase after him - she hisses between her teeth, pointing. With her Hex planted squarely on the man, she's fairly sure they should be able to track him through the city for the next hour, unless she somehow loses her concentration.
That still doesn't stop her from sending a parting volley his way, though. "The last we've seen of you?" she scoffs aloud. "You have that backwards, fool!"
Attack: 7 Damage: 10 force + 5 necrotic
Cadmael, she thinks grimly afterwards. Follow him, quickly.(Cadmael: dash action, 100ft flight speed) Then, placing her trust in her teammates, she steps back from the bow of the ship and prepares herself for an odd battle of the mind.
(Just to clarify Effort's strategy here: Cadmael is going to fly after the captain and on each turn that he can will attack via Effort, who can channel spells through the birb. So it's not just Brask chasing after him. ;-) )
Cadmael can certainly follow as well, however most of this area away from the river is taller buildings connected by metal roofing, so he'll have to fly lower than he's accustomed to. He won't have advantage on perception checks, but 13 is good enough for Effort to have seen him and sent the blast. It's also crowded in this area - so LMK how close Cadmael is going to get to the leader. Stay back a bit? Right on top of him?
Effort's blast misses, erupting against the ground a few feet behind the fleeing enemy. As this is happening, both grunts begin climbing down the ship. They hop off toward the bottom, leaping down the final few feet, and begin fleeing themselves. At this point a loose crowd has formed, wondering what the hell is going on.
Brask chases recklessly after the leader, but realizes after a moment he has absolutely no idea which direction he headed. He scans the crowd, trying to pick on any movement. He doesn't - and is so focused he doesn't notice Cadmael soar past him overhead.
Cadmael will stay close enough to follow and just far away enough to be out of range of a swipe attack from the leader. He'll stop following if he loses sight of the leader (bad perception check) or if the leader goes somewhere an owl can't easily follow (like inside a building and slams the door).

Brask mutters under his breath and moves to the railing.
History 13
(Does Brask recognise any of these guys?)
Was that his full action, or can he make a ranged attack? Which of the enemies are in range?

Effort, you're up! And I forgot to negate Murmur's disadvantage with Cadmael, so feel free to use it yourself this turn.

Prepared action from last round: He's a big lad... he can take it... and I shouldn't miss?... 9 : 12
Burik will then jump down and join the fight against the brute 16 : 3
(1st roll with advantage cause I forgot... 11)
psst...ballista is +6 to hit, not +2! not like it matters much but ;)

Brask is going to climb down as fast as he can, not taking damage, and then attempt to give chase.
(Sorry folks, this isn't a smart thing to do, but this is personal...)
Using your action surge, you can get within 30 or so feet of the leader. Roll a perception check as you try and chase him through the docks.
Effort, you're up. There are still two grunts there, attempting to surrender as they hang off the side of the ship. One injured.
