"I know sorching ray and can't cast acid arrow," Kastix states when asked about the scrolls

Erky quickly determines that the book is a collection of dragon lore, but since this is not his particular area of interest, he hands it back to Rhayna.

"You know, Rhayna, though that book is not magical, to a degree it can be. Should you want to, I can use it to teach you Draconic - quite a useful language if you want to truly learn something about magic or history. So, what would you say?"

Although the steep stone stairs are crumbling, with the aid of the rope all manage to reach the bottom safely. Ireniana remains at the top long enough to untie the rope, and then nimbly traverses the staircase unaided. The tunnel passage is damp and the smell of plant and fungal rot seems to seep through from the room above, despite the intervening rock. Similar but much more intact stairs ascend further down the passage, which then continues to a right-turn, opening into yet another long corridor. Two doors can be seen on the left (east) wall at the far end.

Rhayna flips through the book and she is beyond miffed that she cannot understand it. She hears the offer from Erky. "Yes, that would be wonderful. If we have some downtime, I would be delighted to learn a new language with you."

"let's see what's behind door one," Kastix pens the first door and peers inside.

A layer of soil covers the floor. Rough wooden shelves, filled with a scattering of tomes and scrolls, line the north and east walls, and a rough-hewn desk stands in the center of the chamber. Fungus on the ceiling provides light, apparently in sufficient quantity to nourish several small bushes and pale saplings that grow in the soil.

The scrolls are in an unreadable language, written in a script with a somewhat Sylvan style. The desk is unlocked and contains 364 gold pieces, four agate gems, and a set of thieves' tools.

A door in the southern wall exits the room.

"Then it settled - as soon as we can allow it. Alphabet and a few rules - and you will be able to deduce the rest by yourself, I am sure of it, with this book for a practice."

"Of course, let's check the first door. Should we send Weesly in? That is how I decided to call that fine animal," commented Erky sending the Weasel forward...  aaaand immediately pulling him back - the books, even damagedt one, were better off without any animal, that can be inclined to try it for food. He picked up a scroll "Fascinating! I wander what kind of language is this? Sylvan? Why here? I'll take it back to the Library."

 Kaylyn looked around the room but books were never the type of knowledge she sought.  If no one else did, she would take the thieves tools knowing that while she lacked the formal training to use them her naturally nimble fingers could put them to use to unlock chests or doors.

After helping collect the treasure found she speaks.

"This looks like a study perhaps.  I think we may be getting close to where this Belak is."

Rhayna does not see anything interesting here and moves to the next room with the party.

(OCC: Darn!! I should have picked Sylvan instead of Elvish!!)

Although Rhayna hasn't learned Sylvan, she knows it is written in the Elvish script. This is another script altogether, although it has similarities to Elvish/Sylvan. It is more likely to be some kind of secret language...

Ireniana shakes her head and shrugs. "Sorry, I cannot read Sylvan either."

After letting the party pass the book around, "Let's go then. Keep the book, throw the book away, put it back but let's get moving," Kastix gestures to southern? door to the room

"Absolutely! Would you still want to go first? Or should it be Weezly this time?" Erky was lost in the thoughts about those incredible books and scrolls, but functional enough to send the animal forward. 

Royan strides forward in agreement with Kastix, and pushes the door open. At his master's bidding, Weesly through the doorway first, with the others following.

The floor of the adjoining chamber is spread with piles of twigs and roots, but more noticeably, the collapsed southern wall opens into a vast cavern. Luminescent fungus on the rough walls and the high roof of the cavern loom over a twilight grove of sickly briars, bushes, saplings, and other woody plants. Ruined walls and hollow towers protrude from the pale, spindly briars, which press close, casting twisted shadows on the earth floor in the soft violet light.

Two goblins stand on each side of the room, frozen in the process of sorting the woody specimens, clearly surprised by the intrusion. One of them speaks roughly:

You should not be here! Aid us, Protector of the Twilight Grove!

"Calm down fellows. We are not here to harm you." Says Rhayna in a calm manner.

Initiative (if needed): 8

Just in case Erky repeated magic goblin phrase, commenting that "your shaman is summoning you", but not really hoping at that point it can still work. He called Weesly back and made him sit near hopelessly watching goblin's reaction.

The goblins faces show a mixture of emotions when Erky speaks the phrase, from astonishment to elation to suspicion. But as their call for aid seems to have gone unheeded, they look at each other, seem to come to some unspoken agreement, and slowly shuffle across the room and through the door on the west side.

Now alone in the room, with the briar-filled and ruin-studded cavern before you, lit from overhead with a luminous mycelial glow, almost 200 feet away at the far end of the cavern, behind a larger and more intact wall, you see the upper black, bare twisted branches of a large tree.

Kaylyn looks around and into the grove from where they stand near the door. 

"My money's on Belak being the protector.  But we know we've found the grove now."
