Pizazz's Ravenloft and Beyond

Meepo would check the door for any traps, then try to see if he can figure out how it opens.

(Assuming someone is 'helping' Meepo, otherwise just take the first:  9 / 12

The doors must be magically sealed, or have a bar across the inside that is freed in a non obvious way. They won’t budge. You could try pushing hard you suppose. (Roll str if you like), or maybe just bashing it down with an axe?  

Lionel shrugged: "I can try to break it open, but do we need to go there? If it is locked to tight, unlikely something is going in or out of there. Yet, noise can attrack something from other, open areas. May be it is safer to check other rooms first? Is there any way up into the statue?"

"Meepo agree." Meepo says and would follow the others to some other area.  (What haven't we checked yet?)

(Right side is a mystery, first floor on the left side is not uncovered as well, and we have not been inside the statue).

You examine the large statue in detail.  Mordekai had investigated it, but it was during a flurry of combat and didn't notice a small latch.  Upon pressing it, a section of statue slides inwards revealing a cavity with a ladder going up.  Lionel investigates and it leads to a small room in the head of the statue. Frozen blood stains the walls. It's otherwise empty. 

"Empty", explained Lionel after examination. "But might be the safest place to take a small break. We might need it."

"Meepo ok with short rest."  Meepo says if everyone else is leaning that way.

"OK, in that case, you guys stay put, I'll see if I can get Ulthan... Again."

With that, Mordekai will Dimension Door to just outside of the fissure, hoping that's where Ulthan would have run to. If he's not there, Mordekai will move cautiously around to the main door of the temple and make his way from there back to the statue with Lionel and Meepo, keeping a constant lookout for any sign of Ulthan, to bring him back to join the party for the short rest. 

If Lionel could say a word before Mordekai begun to cast, he would say "no" - the man made his choice, and now most likely is happily on his way somewhere less scary, may be joining those barbarians or something. That place is bad enough as it is to drag along someone unwilling.

With the plan for a short rest Meepo will plan to cast his tiny hut ritual, once everyone is there who is going to be there.  He would wait a bit for the giant-kin if Mordekai does go to fetch him, but only until Mordekai arrived back, with or without him.  If Mordekai doesn't go, then he will simply start casting.

The large man appears from behind a tree, bow in hand, and backpack on back. He crunches through snow approaching but not bothering to shake off the snow that covers his furs. He is about 70 feet away when he talks... loudly...... "hrmpfh hurt resting outside feels bad resting there i come when healed hrmpfh."

Mordekai returns empty handed and informs them that Ulthan, gravely injured is resting outside until his wounds heal.  Off to one side in the massive black, frigid room Meepo completes his spell and soon you're all within.  Mordekai feeling markedly better without the cold seeping into his very bones.  To Lionel and Meepo it seems to make little difference. 

An hour passes quickly enough. There is neither movement, nor light or sound in the temple. Just silence and the ever present tang of evil that saturates the fabric of reality here.  

Short rest done.

"Shall we finish checking the left side on this level?" Lionel had no more ideas where to look for the Sword, but was still determined to continue the search.

The double doors behind the statue on the right were the ones that were sealed and seemed not to open.  You could try pushing really hard or breaking it down still if you want.

(I though we were trying to open the doors on the sough - X5c. But the notion remains - if it is sealed that tight, no point to break in just yet)

As they come to the end of their short rest, Mordekai begins his usual speech, this time recounting where they have and haven't explored, not so much an inspirational pep talk as a tactical recap. He'll finish by reminding them that they're still here, despite what they've been through in this place, and even though they have one ally who's twice run out on them and is hopefully sleeping off his fear as well as his injuries, they're still in a position to bring some light and good to combat the seeping evil of the temple.
