If you beat the wolves init, let me know what you do. The wolves have half cover or full cover in the woods until they emerge and are anywhere from 15 to 40 feet away. You don't know how many there are, but can see 4 on the left and 3 on the right at the moment.

Lionel leaps into action, swiping his blade in the forest, a wolf hacked down, falling to the ground with it's neck cut. On the other side, the forest explodes with fire, the brief yelps of pain of several wolves rip from within.
As several wolves lunge out towards Lionel, Olin steps forward presenting his holy symbol, his will rings out like a high pitched tone.

Mordekai sees the wolves charge Lionel and Olin. In a bid to protect his friends, Mordekai casts Hex on one of the wolves attacking Olin, and fires an Eldritch Blast at it.

Olin Str Save: 8
Olin sidesteps one wolf and knocks aside another's attack. The third wolf's attack lands but Olin resists it pulling him to the ground. Hefting his new spear he calls forth his spectral oak branch and swings down on injured wolves! "The devil has perverted even the natural beasts to do his bidding."
The group hacks away at the wolves. A few moments later and its all done. Wolves lay scattered about the road. Fire burns in the forest, though the wet wood means it's mostly smoke, the air filled with the sound of loud crackles and pops as the fire rapidly dies.

The group continues on the path, their load now lightened by one book. Feeling more confident, the group presses on to Vallaki. The day is wet and the walk is long, muddy, and miserable but no more unfortunate events befall you. You reach the gates and are let in by the dour looking guards who look at the blood splatters and dents and scrapes in your armor with silent curiosity. The group makes their way through the quiet town, the streets empty in the ongoing drizzle, until they march into Blue Water Inn. Adrian and Elvir from the winery are in here, sitting casually, a table of empty dishes and a few crumbs between them. Urwin sits, leaning in talking to them. Two other dour looking men, rough and travelled sit at another table sipping mugs of wine and watch the groups entrance with interest. A colorfully dressed half-elf also sits, half dozing, in one corner of the Inn. He cracks an eye as the group enters.
Urwin stands up and approaches the group. "I understand I have you to thank for my families survival." He nods thoughtfully. "Even for my dad, the cranky ol bastard. Well, thank you. You have rooms here as long as you need, and as much wine and food as you wish. And, we had a deal, let me go get you something. Have a seat over by Adrian and Elvir."
Urwin heads out. A few minutes later he comes and sits down with you, his back to the other patrons, a brown cloth in his hands. He unfolds the cloth, using his body as cover. Beneath you see the shaft hilt of what must have been a mighty weapon. Broken crystal lays at the base of where a blade would be.The hilt and guard appear to be made of platinum. Its magical nature is plain to see. "The blade has never been seen by anyone alive, so I'm not sure how much help it will be, but here it is. It is a weapon Strahd wished destroyed. I do not think he knows the hilt still exists, else he would have sought it out by now."

Lionel picked up the hilt - trying to be inconspicuous (though as a secondary thought) and to deduce the length of the blade, weight of the weapon and craftsmanship in whole. The crystal - last broken piece? - he also studied, asking only one question "Those Keepers of the Feather - are they still around somewhere?"
"Meepo still think should traded for smoking mount." Meepo complains as he looks at the sword hilt. He sighs, trying to let it go. "What good only hilt?" He asks.
(OOC: Reminder. Who kept the magical axe you found in the tree? Can anyone use an axe?)
Lionels fingers tingle as he picks up the hilt. It's would have to have a fairly light blade for how the hilt is balanced. Usually there would be a heavy knob at the end to offset the blades weight, but this hilt has very little heft to it.
Urwin smiles, "We are the Keepers of the feather. Our family. Because, you know...." he winks...then flaps his arms and says, "caw caw... but it was my fathers father who found it, none of us who are alive today." He turns to Meepo, "I'm afraid I don't know if it will be any use. I'm sorry."

"Sometimes I believe necromancers have their uses - it seems only ghosts can tell anything about the sword now." He grimaced, probably thinking about last necromancer he had to deal with. "But speaking of of ghosts. Your father suffers attack form yet another enemy - a witch, sending some kind of animated scarecrows after the grape vines. We might want to dispose of her as well - doubtfully she has something to do with the sword or directly with Strahd, but the less minions he has, the better.
