The shadows erupt in a black inky substance as they die, and the only thing left in the room are your dirty, rattled selves. The darkness in this room is almost palpable, the floor covered with black ooze, cold, and remorseless. Even the star field above offered no salvation.
Madison, panting, wipes her face and laughs softly to herself. For the first time, there was hope. We beat them. They can be beat. A glimmer of hope was felt.
THE UMBRAL PITS, LEVEL ONE
You have cleared the first of four rooms on level one. (The small room in the center.) Wherever you are, whatever this place is, you know, going forward, this place will test your body and mind. What terrible horrors await you in this place? It was time to pick the next room.
As the battle dies down, Freya rests her chin on her chest, closes her eyes, and relaxes. She has never felt more alive in her entire life....she can literally feel the heartbeats of everyone in the room, and it excites her!
Concentrating on her own heartbeat for a minute, she realizes that they're stuck here, wherever here is. Digging back into the recesses of her mind, she flexes a muscle she never knew existed, and realizes she knows how to get out of here. (Freya is using a Horizon Walker skill - Detect Portal - to find the way out of this maze)
Detect Portal
Once per short rest, as an action, you detect the distance and direction to the closest planar portal within 1 mile of you.
Freya calls out to Exelda, but loud enough for all to hear: "Hey Frenchie! My spider senses are tingling, telling me that the exit outta this place is thatta way (she points north)!"
Dia rolls her eyes. "Come now, we shouldn't leave quite yet...we just got here, and who knows what else there is to find?" The devil smirks. "Perhaps east?"
This room appears to be about 40 x 40 with no apparent exits. Like all the other features of this place, all the walls are pure black stone with no ceiling but a star field. As you all enter the room, a terrible sense of dread and horror activates your fight or flight mode, you become a person of pure instinct, terrified, and afraid. You attempt to focus and regain control of yourselves.
Everyone must pass a DC20 WIS check, or become so terrified, you absolutely will not enter this room. Those that pass simply MUST know what's inside.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The 40 x 40 room is lit by two invisibly held torches of purple flame, one on each side of the walls. The walls of this room, like all the others, are black and perfectly smooth. Imprisoned on the walls by shadowy chains, a massive demonic being with a huge scythe watches over and torments five vague representations of what appear to be frightened souls. The demon slowly turns.
"MORE SOULS FOR THE CAGES."it rumbles loudly in your minds, and brandishes it's massive weapon.
MECHANICS:The Umbral Souldemon has 200 hit points with an AC of 18. If you are hit by the demon, your soul gets chained to the wall and you are out of combat - but you're not dead. At the end of every round, the Souldemon will consume one of the 5 NPC souls and heal a random amount. If the 5 NPC souls run out and it absorbs your soul, you die. The game is over if everyone either dies or gets chained to the walls. Umbra wins.

Last to know and first to be blamed...
As a free action, can I regret my life choices?
You can detect a "transport" system of some type "north".

Nevermind, we don't have to roll. Let's find out what's in this room. I'm sure it's fine.
