The man bows and responds with enthusiasm to Lumen’s request, and let’s out an excited hoot when Krackle appears from behind him.
“Greetings, Master Lumen. And let me give you a proper welcome to The White Hart Inn; Avgar Filroy at your service! Stew, ale and a bed for the night. Same for the rest of you?”
”Well... what have we here? A mysterious creature of the forest, I presume? Don’t think we’ve seen many of your kind in here before, least not that I can remember. But you are welcome here, just as you all are! It’s so good to see a proper group of travelers... as you can see, it’s a little quiet in here this evening.”
”A small bowl of stew for you, then, and a half a mug of ale? And of course, Master Lumen. I don’t think they’d mind, although you’d probably be entertaining me more than them... I love music! You’re welcome to play for as long as you want!”
Chrys smiles in relief at the much more familiar tavern atmosphere, even if the place looks a little empty. Trying not to be too harsh, she settles at the table and orders a stew and ale. "So... what's the story here? Why the abandoned buildin' on the other side o' town? An' where is everybody? Don't look too busy here at the moment... we come at off season or somethin'?"
She manages to keep her smile on her face as she converses, even as Lumen begins to perform what she would call a "more traditional" piece from his people. Broaden yer horizons, Chrysoberyl... it's a different people, an' a different culture... keep an' open - aww hell, is he murderin' cats o'er there or somethin'? Her teeth clench a little as she tries to keep the smile up.
Performance. Grin and bear it, Chrys! This is normal! XD : 21
She manages to convince herself it's so important to understand Lumen's cultural background that she actually tries to convey that with tapping fingers and a friendly expression to the innkeeper as she talks.
"Yay Lumen!" Krackle would shout at the end of his performance.. talking much louder than normal as the rining in his ears makes it hard for him to determine how loudly he is talking.
Doing the best she could to ignore the moaning rabbits that Lumen was evoking at the moment, Kess shook away her gritted teeth to look to Avgar Filroy.
"May I have a bowl of stew, please? And what wines do you carry, if I may ask?"

He thinks to himself that wow, Chrys is a fan of this music but maybe I should keep things a bit more traditional in the future. Yikes. Kess is being polite, but I can tell she’s straining from here. Krackle is a very kind kobold, to be cheering once again, no matter how I perform. Vesper’s even more silent than normal, and usually she uses silence to murder people with her eyes. The locals, well, yeesh.
I was going to finish early but... Chrys really really seems to love it so I’ll power through.
"A kobold...? Why I never heard of a kobold, and I have certainly never seen one! Where do kobolds come from and what are they known for?" Avgar asks with apparently curiosity.
He beckons you all to sit and enjoy yourselves, and he brings you bowls of stew and bread, and whatever drink you specify. For Kess, he recommends a nice dark red from Silverymoon, "Good stuff! Full of ripe berries and a nice, long finish. Had that one in my cellar for a long spell! Only got a couple a' bottles left, but you might as well enjoy it!"
(The cost for dinner is 2 gp ea. for the meal, which is quite tasty, rich with vegetables, thick broth and soft chunks of venison, 1 sp for ale and 1 gp for the wine.) Antonio glad sits and is relived to take a load off his feet. He settles into one of the comfy chairs until his food arrives, then joins you at one of the tables. He seems tired, but quite glad to be here.
Whether it's because he's tired from a long day of traveling, the very small crowd or some other factor, Lumen's performance is really not that good. It's lacking in his own enthusiasm, and his singing and playing is not nearly as good as what he's shown in the past. Certainly nothing like that rousing set he played during Shieldmeet. However, Chrys seems to be genuinely enjoying his set, even though Lumen can tell that the others are merely being polite. The few other people in the lodge don't pay him much mind, although Avgar smiles and hums along, slightly out of key, even if he doesn't know the words to some of the songs.
To Chrys's questions, he answers with a mix of pride and melancholy. "Ohh, that large stone building? That's where The Hunt Lords live. That is their keep. You see, Noanar's Hold is a very popular sporting village, and The White Hart Inn is the most famous hunting lodge in all of the North. The Hunt Lords rule the village and arrange lavish hunting trips for those Sword Coast folk who come for adventure. At least they did... Sadly, no one comes here anymore. Unsavory rumors have frightened everyone away, and now The Hunt Lords are retired."
"The White Hart Inn is still the finest lodge around, as you can see, and it's the safest refuge against the spirits and dangers that lie out in the forest. Especially at night. Best to stay inside during the dark hours... which is what the villagers here tend to do... Very few of them come here to the Inn, and almost no one comes after dark. Most of the time it's just me and my servants who keep this place running and clean.
As Avgar series you and tells you about the place, you can see that the small group of people has finished their meal and is getting ready to leave.
(Kess and Vesper can roll a history check if they wish.)
Chrys nearly chokes on her stew when Avgar mentions the price. She almost pushes the bowl away and declares that she'll eat a ration instead, but as she's already taken a bite of the soup, she sighs and resigns herself to enjoying a "Hunt Lord's" meal. On the plus side, at least the ale is reasonably priced, and drinking it down helps soothe her injured coinpurse. It doesn't do much for her ears, and she's grateful when Lumen finally ends his set.
"That's a damn shame,"Chrys says to Avgar. "Ya got yourselves a real nice place here. What sort o' nasty rumors would keep yer Hunt Lords away from such a great resort town, eh?"
"I did try a few different things. I'm not sure they worked, but then I saw Chrys enjoying it so much, and I kept at it. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I'm so glad that I was able to bring joy to someone's ears. Chrys, I'll have to make sure you get some repeat performances!"Lumen says in a rush, sitting down after his set. When he is told the price of the meal, he holds in what is hopefully a belch, gulps, and looks up at Avgar. "My, a meal fit for a king! We are but humble travelers and performers, not used to such finery. May I ask how much a room might be? And if there's any sort of artist's rate I might be able to talk you into for myself and my friends here?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Kess graciously accepts her meal, paying Avgar for the tantalizing stew and wine, taking a bite and savoring the flavor.
"Mmm... this is well-cooked; my compliments to the chef. Venison must be handled carefully over the fire, or it becomes too tough. But this? It's so savory, and it melts in your mouth! Did you roast it before placing it into the stew, or marinate it? It has such a delicate flavor, and a note of spice as well. Is that Tethyrian pepper I taste?"
Hunt Lords... Hunt Lords... why did that bug her? Kess swirled her wine and sipped it from her glass before taking another bite of her expensive but enjoyable meal. She didn't particularly care that it was costing her 3 gold to dine so finely, it was just the thing needed after a long day's travel, her thoughts turning back to the word "Hunt Lords"...
(A roll to see if Kess was paying attention in elf school that day: 18 )
Chrys takes an extra large swig of her ale to steel herself, before looking Lumen in the eye and saying: "I got my own tastes. What's important is that you do you. No, really. You do yer thing. For the love o' the Duin, I'm askin' ya ta go with yer gut feelin' next time."
Oh mighty Duin, hear my prayer, she thinks fervently as she says this.
Krackle would look down at his (now empty) small bowl of stew and his (also very empty) half mug of ale. The tiny cobolds brass colored scales would seemingly go pale when he mentions the price.. "Oh... Where do Kobolds come from... and what do we do?" Krackle would reply as he nervously pulls out his very small and nearly empty coin purse. "Well... I came from an egg.. and we are known for... uhh..." The kobold would look even more nervous. "digging holes... I think. I am really good at digging.. but lots of people don't like us... Maybe it is because we remind them of moles or groundhogs or other digging creatures that cause problems.." Krackle would reply destractedly as he empties the last few coins he has on the table (2g and 5 copper). "I... hope that is enough..." the kobold would reply as he counts the coins over and over.. realizing that it might not be enough as his scales appear to go even more pale.
Lumen drops four gold on the table, covering his own expensive meal and drink, as well as most of Krackle's bill. (Assuming there's not a big discount in the works.)
"Why thank you for noticing. It's the finest lodge for hundreds of miles in all directions! And perhaps you heard me wrong, the Hunt Lords are still here, it's the clients who stopped coming. Seems that many years ago, someone began spreading rumors that that Noanar's Hold is not safe, which is pure poppy wash. It's perfectly safe here, but, as I mentioned, the forest outside our borders is haunted by many spirits... spirits of long-dead hunters who lurk amidst the trees. For travelers such as yourself, this lodge is the safest place for you, especially after dark."
Responding to Lumen, he says,
"My, that was a wonderful performance, my good man! The best we've had here in a very long time! And I'm so glad you enjoyed the meal. I have a number of servants who help me with the cooking and cleaning and general upkeep of this lodge."
"Rooms are two gold coins per person for the night, with each of you in your own private room, of course. I'm afraid I don't have an artist's rate, as you call it. A place like this requires a generous amount of maintenance and care, none of which comes free. Tell you what, though. I will remove the charge for your drinks. Does the suffice?"
To Kess, the excited little man replies,
"Ah.. someone who knows their cuisine! You are correct, m'lady, it takes care and attention to prepare venison in such a way that it's not too tough or gamey. We do give it a light roast before adding it to the stew, and I marinate it for an entire day beforehand. And what a perceptive palette you have! Yes, that's Tethyrian pepper you taste! I do so enjoy guests who know and appreciate fine food. That's exactly what the propriety of a lodge such as this would want!"
Listenting to Krackle, Avgar responds with great curiosity.
"How curious...known for your digging. I must admit, I know little of digging or of moles and groundhogs, but you are certainly no problem for me! I will admit, though, and please forgive me if I offend you, but to my eyes, you look like a very tiny dragon. However, I have never seen a dragon either, so what do I know. At any rate, I am most glad for your patronage, master kobold. Is that how you pronounce it?"
Lumen nods and smiles without mirth and drops his gold on the table, plus two gold for his room. He later gestures for Krackle to follow along after the group retires, inviting the kobold to crash with him.
The bard does ask a few follow up questions to Avgar, wanting to know stories about the various Hunt Lords of olde, and any stories about the spirits. He’s a bard, he collects stories, so this happens like breathing.
When the innkeeper has stepped away, he suggests they try to keep watch among the group, even among different rooms. Talk of hunter ghosts has set him on edge.
As she listened to Avgar reply to Chrys, Kess suddenly remembered why everything about this town had both piqued her curiosity. Indeed, Noanar's Hold had left her stirring and confused, almost as if she had forgotten something.
And then, she remembered.
Back Kess' mind went to her time under the watchful eye of One-Eyed Jax in Luskan. The man himself had occasionally regaled her and the other girls with a few wild tales of what he'd heard and experienced in his travels, some of them seeming impossible to believe. One had been about a dread castle that supposedly pieced itself together from a book, another about a wild and ribald card game in Calimshan involving too much alcohol and a lady djinn (one he did not overly elaborate on to avoid offending his fair company), and yet another about a time where he had supposedly tricked a series of bandits into turning themselves in to face the justice of a local militia.
And then, she remembered the story Jax once told of a friend who had went to this place, Noanar's Hold... and that he never returned. He then regaled the girls, as they all listened in awe or terror, at the dreadful rumors about the place.
Kess stiffened for a moment, so much so that she hadn't even realized at first that Avgar was speaking to her and praising her discerning tongue as she recalled all of this.
"Um..." Kess quaffed a bit of her wine and cleared her throat, before replying and hoping that Avgar hadn't discerned the reason for her pause. "Why, thank you, good sir. Your establishment is certainly worth the coin. We've been travelling from distant Yartar, and have found ourselves quite busy since the Shieldsmeet. A warm bed and a solid roof are welcome sights for all of us. I am curious... it must be quite challenging to get Tethyrian pepper here, so far from the trappings of a city. How do you come by it?"
They had to just be rumors... right? They'd seen and heard nothing to suggest that such wild stories about the Hunt Lords to be true. The forest was certainly dangerous and not to be traveled by fools, true enough, and its branches likely held all manner of creature within. But still, the idea nagged at Kess.
Hopefully, the innkeeper wouldn't discern her question was less a curiosity and more of a probe.
"Well.. I guess I do look a bit like a dragon" Krackle would reply as the he smiles to Lumen and puts his only two gold coins back in his bag. "I.. have never seen a dragon either but I heard that some kobolds work for dragons" The small kobold would add as he looks from the inn keeper down to his feet. "hmm.. maybe that is why so many people don't like us.." he would whisper to himself before moving towards Lumen. When they head to their rooms, Krackle would stay very close to the half orc. "Thanks for buying my meal... I guess I am not very good with coin yet." he kobold would say with a frown.

Lumen's happy to perform after he has his fill.
