After Kess informs you of what she saw, you all retrace her steps until you find yourself within view of the mound. It does look somewhat like a beaver dam, only bigger. When you cautiously approach, though, you can see that it does not actually have a door, there's just dark opening in the front of the makeshift hut on the side opposite the lake. The opening looks to be about the size of what a human-sized creature would need to comfortably enter and exit.
"Well... there's nothin' to it then. I'm goin' up there. But if there's enough fog, I still think some o' ya should try ta be sneaky-like." Chrys pats Krackle, allowing the little kobold to make his own decision as to whether to continue to ride on a shoulder, walk on his own, or choose some other manner of transport to approach the hut.
Krackle gladly offers to go investigate the hut in bear form. He transforms himself into the kobear and accompanies Chrys as they cautiously approach the opening to the small hut. Getting closer, they can see that it was definitely crafted by something other than a beaver. It's quite large, about 25 feet in diameter, and about 8 feet high in the middle and made from sticks, grasses and dried mud. In front of the hut, you see a long sharp pole that is is stuck into the ground a few yards away from the opening.
Chrys and Krackle advance towards the front of the hut, and not hearing anything, they move closer and peek inside. Upon first glance, they don't see or hear anything.
Chrys calls out, but does receive any answer, nor does hear any voices or movement within the hut.
Chrys
You call forth your Divine Sense, but your mind remains quiet. You do not feel the presence of any evil nearby, nor are you suddenly aware of any of the creature types that the ability allows you to sense.
"Hmm... really, nobody's home... least not anybody I can sense,"she mutters. Walking out, she signals to the others as best she can of her find - or lack of it, and then takes another look around the hut, trying to find evidence of who or what might be living there.
Looking around the hut, you find that there is indeed nobody home. In fact, with current state of disrepair, it appears to be abandoned, as if there has been nobody here in awhile. Judging by the size and layout of the hut, you would probably guess that some kind of humanoid creature used this place as a dwelling. It was definitely built as living space. Inside, it's actually divided into two separate "rooms," that are split by a large piece of old, rotting cloth that hangs from a long wooden log beam across the "ceiling."
Inside the smaller room behind the curtain, you see the remnants of a makeshift "mattress" made from dried grasses and old cloth, thats' propped up on a bed of large sticks and small logs, and a small "table" that's made from a pile of small rocks and flat piece of driftwood. Inside the main room, which is scattered with a mess of dirt, sticks and leaves, that were probably blown in through the open door, you find a small wooden box lying upside down on the natural floor. It is open and shows sings of damage, as if someone broke it while forcing it open. You also see the decaying corpse of a raven that's lying amidst the refuse.
Inside the smaller partition, there appears to be a secondary "exit" that leads into the lake. It's essentially a person-sized, water-filled hole that's been dug out of the dirt and would allow one to enter the lake without leaving the hut.
"Something strikes me as a little strange about all of this... didn't Gusof tell us that the witch resides near here? And that he was alone in the lake?" Kess would ask, looking around at the perpetual fog, her blades already out. "Why would this structure be here, then?"
From what you see here, there’s really no way to determine whose hut this is, or was, or where exactly you are right now. However, you know that you’ve only been walking for about 20-25 min, and Gusof had indicated that it would probably take you an hour to reach the other side of the lake, where he told you the witch lived.
Lumen’s investigation doesn’t reveal anything new, it seems as if this place has clearly been abandoned and if there was anything of value here, it’s gone.
Lumen nods, snapping out of his examination, and curious about what the hut really was. He'll help keep watch as they continue to walk around the lake.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Coming out of the hut, Chrys shrugs at the others. "Ain't nothin' here... and hasn't been for years, from the looks o' it. Best we move on, I think. Doesn't seem like this is the place."
As she continues to make her way along the shoreline, Chrys once again tries to squint through the fog and silence to look for any signs of this 'witch.' Perception: 12
Finding nothing at this small, seemingly abandoned hut, you leave it behind and continue moving. With Kess's keen eyes and ears scouting ahead, trying to pierce the thick fog, you steadily tromp forward, following the edge of the lake. Your sense of direction is pretty much nonexistent right now, as you can't see anything beyond about 50-100 feet, and the lake seems to be large enough, that there's no obvious visible indication of it curving around in any kind of circle. To you, it seems as if you're walking in a straight line, but in you mind, you know that's not true, or probably not true, since it's clearly a lake and not a river, which would have at least some motion. This body of water is eerily still and smooth as glass, and looking out over it, you can only see so far before your view fades into a blank field of light gray.
With your feet and lower legs soaking wet and your bodies cool from the damp, chilly air, you plod along, stepping through the mucky, muddy ground and knee high grasses. After another 30 minutes or so, you see some large shapes slowly come into your field of view. It seems that up ahead there is another stand of twisted trees that rise out of the edge of the lake.
"Huh,"Chrys says coming to a stop. "Ya think that's it? It's the only thing we seen that's not shore, shore, an' more shore,"she complains, rubbing her sore legs. She eyes the trees, and shrugs. "I ain't got no ideas besides pickin' up a stone an' chuckin' it at the tree, an' seein' if somethin' moves. Of course, considerin' the trees we've seen here, that would also be damn rude if it weren't some evil witch we were lookin' for."
She turns to the group and shrugs helplessly. "Thoughts?"

Also does this seem like the witch's hut? Are we on the other side of the lake?
"Something strikes me as a little strange about all of this... didn't Gusof tell us that the witch resides near here? And that he was alone in the lake?" Kess would ask, looking around at the perpetual fog, her blades already out. "Why would this structure be here, then?"
(I'm assuming it's the witch's hut, or Gusof's hut, and he's been lying to us.)

"Should we get back to walking?"

... really thick fog, though...
((Is it too late for Kess to make a separate check as well, DM? :) She'd be looking out ahead and around!))
No, feel free to make a check for Kess if you want.
((Thank you for the mercy, DM! :) ))
Also keeping out a keen eye, Kess looked forward, ahead and around...
