Lumen does see a few small piles of notes scattered about on both the table and the shelves, and he's easily able to grab them. Upon returning to the group, he explains what he saw and shows the papers to Aelar. The copper haired elf steps forward into the small laboratory to see for himself, and you watch a look of horror wash across his face when he sees the rabid, half-wolf creature in the cage.
"This cannot be...! It's Lucan... Lia's husband. I watched him die as he fought alongside me! We carried his body to the chapel and we all witnessed Fivin conduct his burial..."
"...Fiven...!! he says with a tone of disbelief and anger, shaking his head. "What foul devilry has he gotten himself into?"
He then reads through the notes, his eyes scanning the papers with a sense of grave focus, even as the creature throws itself against the bars of the cage in a fury of unnatural chaotic rage. When he's finished, Aelar looks up and says, "These notes were indeed written by Fivin, and from I gather, he appears to have been conducting experiments to try and create the perfect lycanthropic race. He aims to alter our curse to manifest the benefits of being a werewolf, while having full control over the change."
"How did I not see this? He has defiled one of his own with necromancy and created a monster in the process. This is not who we are. This cannot be tolerated!"
Just then, you hear a noise behind you, and when you look over at the entrance, you see the old chronicler of the Warriors of Sehaninie himself, standing at you with a look of shock on his face.
Lumen steps forward quietly, drawing a dagger. He looks closely at Fivin for any spell component pouches, any spell focuses, anything that he'd prefer not to lose. Failing that, he stands ready to cut the man's belt, or collar, or boots. He's not sure how this is going to go, but if the old chronicler is about to start a fight, Lumen's damned if he'll let the crazy old coot do it with skill or respect. He also readies an attack if Fivin begins casting a spell or attacks someone.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Silver steps forward. Fivin's secret has been discovered, and neither he nor Aelar seem pleased. The situation has the potential to turn ugly very quickly.
"Fivin. Your work here has been discovered. I am sure you did not mean it to remain a secret forever, but I believe an explanation is now due. Perhaps you thought your work a noble endeavour, but as you can see, it has driven your kinsman mad. Lucan does not deserve this, nor do his wife and children. Will you show them this creature and say 'This is your husband. This is your father'? Or will you undo what has been done? Can you?"
Nym will begin to step clockwise around the others and Fivin to attempt to block any ideas he had of a quick escape. As soon as she is in position as Silver asks her questions, the drow will murmur and touch her fingers to her lips, casting Zone of Truth. "If I cast magic that will turn away an Undead...will this cr- Will Lucan flee?" She was attempting to hold out hope that perhaps it wasn't true necromancy, but simply a resurrection and then the experimentation done to the man to drive him to this state could be undone.
Fivin makes a brief motion to run towards the other side of the chamber, but quickly halts when Lumen steps forward with a dagger in his hand. Seeing Chrys and Kess also standing between him and the cage, its clearly obvious to the older elf that he won't make it, and now with Silver and Nym flanking him, he has no room to retreat. He doesn't try to cast a spell or reach for anything on his person.
As Silver makes her statement, Aelar also steps forwards and confronts his chronicler. "What is the meaning of this, Fivin? What have you done? This is far outside of the bounds of what The Setting Sun stand for, and what our dear Lady of the Moon would approve of. She has blessed us with the gift of over our curse, and now you have cast her gift aside with devilish experiments of necromancy!!"
The old, thin elf adjusts his half moon shaped spectacles and answers Aelar with a slightly indigent tone, but not before scanning the group and casting a glance of hatred towards the rest of you. "No, I work to keep the Warriors of Sehannine Moonbow alive so that we are not exterminated from this world. It seems that your vision is much less clear with just one eye, Aelar Liadon. Can you not see that our tribe has been nearly decimated in the span of less than a single moon cycle? We were ten, and now we are but three, including one who is missing an arm, plus her two frightened children who now have not father. This gift from the Moonmaiden was not able to prevent us from nearly being killed off by a tribe of troublesome orcs and a dragon who descended upon us, just as we had declared "victory" over the Red Claws."
He then directs his attention to Silver. "You know nothing of our tribe, forest giant. Lucan did not deserve to be cut down by an orc blade, and his family did not deserve to lose their husband and father. I would rather show his children a father with extraordinary strength, and tell them that they could live a future at their full potential, so that they did not have to fear the blades of wandering orcs."
With eyes shifting back to Aelar, he continues, "I can make it so that we can reach our pinnacle as the mighty tribe of warriors who fights for the honor and gratitude of the Moonmaiden. I seek to manipulate our lycanthropic curse so that we can retain the full strength of the wolf, without ever having to manifest its form. What you see before you with Lucan is but a small setback, but that is the province of experimentation. I am confident that with further research, I can find the right formula to achieve the results I seek."
When Nym casts her Zone of Truth spell, Fivin answers her. "Lucan is not undead. He has not returned through necromancy, I have resurrected him and instead brought him back from his death. Unfortunately, he is currently stuck in his hybrid form, and the process seems to have driven him mad."
((Got it. Doesn’t change anything here, as Kess and Chrys also present a clear deterrent against any movement forward that Fivin might have tried to take.))
"You are right, they did not deserve that. Lucan did not deserve to die in that manner,"Silver says calmly. She pauses briefly before continuing, "However, I fail to see how this is better. This is not Lucan any longer, this is a wild beast. Is your control over your ability not linked to your continued reverence for Sehanine Moonbow? How will she react, do you think, to how you spurn her gift? I suggest you tell us what must be done to mend the results of your experimentation, before it is too late."
Kess' expression was caught somewhere between horror and quiet outrage. Being an adherent to the three goddesses who courted Corellon's side, both in their whole and apart, the significance of what Fivin had done was not entirely lost to her... and it was clear from her expression, despite her youth, that she was not amused. As she stood at Chrys' side in front of the cage, she did her best to ignore the snarling and growling vocalizations coming from behind her... and the thought that, beneath that bestial facade was a man who was tormented by feral rage and hunger, driven mad.
"Your intentions seem to have been good... and I don't think any would fault you for trying to return Lucan to life after all you and yours have endured at the hands of the Duskbringer and the Red Claws," Kess quietly interjects, her voice trembling as she speaks, emotion taking her as she meets Fivin's gaze with tears. "But did you ever stop to think that if you should have done this to him? Look at him! He's suffering; he doesn't even remember who he is, and who he still has! Fivin... I'm young, much younger than you, than Aelar or Lia, so I realize you see me as nothing but a child of our kind, but even I can see how violating and wrong this was; people are not toys! I agree with Silver; you should, you must make this right if you can. Haven't those little ones suffered enough?"
For the moment, Aelar seems lost for words as he gazes over at the cage, watching his former kinsman with obvious sadness in his eyes as the transformed, hybrid form of Lucan growls eirh rage and slams his body agains the cage in a frenzy.
You see Fivin's eyes glance over for a few moments as well, and then he looks back at you to answer Silver and Kess. However, when he speaks, you can tell that the tone in his voice has softened a bit, now with more sadness than anger.
"I.... I do not know how to bring him back. I have tried numerous experiments, but I fear that Lucan... or what used to be Lucan, has been permanently altered. And even if I knew how to reverse it, I cannot get close to him, for I'm afraid that he will try and kill anyone who comes within reach."
Silver turns to Nym. "Nym, you mentioned that you have access to a spell which may be able to return a shape shifter to their rightful shape. Do you think it would work on Lucan as he is now, stuck between forms?"
Nym relaxes upon feeling that the Zone of Truth had taken hold and hearing that Lucan had not been brought back as undead. Kess' righteous anger drew her gaze and the dark elf wondered just how young the other elf was. She seemed a truly accomplished and capable fighter so Nym had thought her to be at least two hundred. Kessdarra's pleas rang true and earnest and the emotion behind them stirred something within her fellow Dawnbringer.
But as Fivin explains more about Lucan's predicament, the drown frowns, turning more towards the transformed creature. Blinking in surprise at Silver's question, Nym touched her fingertips to her lips in consideration. "It...might. If he's weak enough. But it will hurt him. And will continue to hurt him while he's under it. I call down radiant moonlight and it burns. But if he passes out..."She drow gives a hesitant glance towards Aelar. "Then he will not be able to fight us if we try and help him."
Silver turns now to Aelar. The situation could be part way resolved right now if he gives the right answer to her coming question, though she knows it will be difficult for him. For them all.
"Aelar. This decision rests on your shoulders as leader of the tribe. Will you allow Nym to perform this magic on Lucan? It may be his only hope, though you have heard that it will not be painless for him. I confess, if you say No, I have no further ideas which will not be even more... unpleasant, for all involved." She gives him a meaningful look.
What options would they have, she ponders, if Aelar does not approve, or the spell does not work? Lucan either remains behind bars the rest of his life, a constant risk to his family living above, or... They find a way to end his life as humanely as possible. She can see no other choices.
Aelar listens to you with a continued look of sadness in his eyes, and then says, “I cannot think of any possible solution that lies within my own power, except…”
”He cannot live like this, locked up, in a state of violent madness, and I certainly cannot allow him to be released, as he will surely kill or infect others with our curse. I see no other choice, but you have shown me that you are worthy of trust and good deeds that lie beyond reasonable expectations. If you think there’s a chance that your magic can revert Lucan to his normal state, then I will allow you to perform your spell on him.”
”May Sehaninne Moonbow forgive us…and may she forgive you, Fivin, because I’m not sure that I am able.”
Nym stands silently, listening to Silver's logically laid out argument and thinking that she was a very good mediator. Thankfully Aelar saw reason and was allowing them to try. Pausing a moment after Aelar's last words to Fivin she then asked the latter, "Do you have ready access to the key to Lucan's cage?"After getting an answer she would explain, "I want to make sure that I can enter if things go too far. To stabilize him I'd have to be able to touch him."
Looking around at the other Dawnbringers, Nym would ask, "Chrys, do you know any divine magic that might aid me? Or perhaps hinder his ability to resist my own magic? And does anybody else have any other suggestions before I attempt this?" Taking whatever they say into consideration first, the drow would then position herself in front of the cage's door but back by at least ten to twenty feet should the room/cave allow it. Drawing in a deep and steadying breath as she grips her longsword, Nym murmurs, "Dark Maiden, I plead for your assistance in helping this lost soul return to himself in body and in mind. Du'ased Tlu."
After her prayer, Nym channels Eilistraee's divine magic and casts Moonbeam over Lucan.
((I can't remember if Nym has seen Chrysoberyl use Bane in combat before, but I was thinking that would be helpful if she's okay using the spell slot. But anyway, DC 13 Constitution Saving Throw.))
Chrys agrees to cast Bane on Lucan to help assure that he's not able to resist the effects of the spell. Even though Nym explains that shapechangers are more susceptible to this magic, it can't hurt to add any little bit of assistance. When she calls forth her own divine magic, Chrys can tell that Lucan does not seemingly resist the effect of the Bane.
With that done, Nym approaches the cage and gets confirmation from Fivin that he indeed has the key. Still remaining a safe distance away, and encouraging everyone else to stand back, she says her prayer and then calls forth a silvery beam of pale blue light that shines brightly down upon the cage, completely engulfing the werewolf in searing, ghostly flames.
Instinctively, the creature tries to shield its eyes from the light, but then it suddenly begins howling and screeching in a roar of painful agony, throwing its body even more violently against the bars of the cage. You watch this horrible tantrum play out for a few brief seconds, but then you see the body instantly transform from a monstrous hybrid half-wolf to that of a handsome, although visibly haggard, silver-haired elf. He stops screaming as he collapses to the ground, curls up into a fetal position and begins whimpering softly, holding his hands over his head in a feeble display of self protection. As he was in his hybrid form, the future is is partially covered in a loose cloak, but he is no longer a monster, he is Lucan Pianthis once again, or at least he appears to be. He's still conscious, but you can tell that he is still reeling from the pain of Nym's spell.
Both Aelar and Fivin stand there speechless, looking on with mouthes agape and expressions of shock in their eyes.
Lumen watches this exchange and subsequent display of divine might unfold with wide open eyes. He offers a soft word of inspiration to Nym (actual inspiration!) and steps forward as Lucan reacts, grimacing. He forgets he is invisible when he asks Aelar, after Lucan falls, what Lucan’s favorite song was. Is? When he gets an answer he will offer to play it, to confirm that Lucan really is in there. Once they have confirmation he offers to cast healing word on him. He claps Nym on the shoulder. “Didn’t think that would work. You’ve got some gumption and skill, and I’m glad you’re on my side!”
Kess blinks, stunned at what had just happened but nevertheless grateful for her Drow friend's connection to Eilistraee in that moment. Had they succeeded???
Starting at the clap on the shoulder, Nym would blink at the compliment before smiling widely, ducking her head a little. "Thank you Lumen. I only hope that it's enough to help Lucan." Seeing that the elf was conscious and transformed back, the drow would concentrate on the spell and move the beam away from over him but still maintaining her concentration on keeping it up, concerned that his mind perhaps might not have returned to him. Approaching the cage next to Kess and raising a hesitant hand up she says in a calm voice, "Lucan. If you are in there still... Lia and Faen and Syllin are waiting for you. Please let us know you're still with us."
If she can reach through the bars to lay a hand on the man, Nym would attempt to cast Cure Wounds. If she can't, then she would follow Lumen's lead and cast Healing Word.
When he’s is finally able to draw Aelar’s attention, Lumen gets a quick answer about Lucan’s favorite song. He isn’t familiar with the exact piece, but he knows a few classic-style elven melodies to improvise and play a gentle tapestry of pleasing arpeggios and single note lines that create a comforting mood in the small chamber.
When Nym moves the Moonbeam away from Lucan’s body, you see more clearly his locks of silver hair falling about his handsome face. When he hears you, he sits up and turns towards you, clearly surprised, but certainly appearing a bit less haggard after your healing.
He looks at you all, and then at his two kinsmen. He asks, “Aelar…? Why am I locked up in here? I don’t… Who are these folk, and where is my family? Are they ok?”
He then gets a terrified look on his face, “Wait… there was… No!! Tell me that they did not fall beneath orc blades!”
Unfortunately, Aelar is moved to tears and is unable to speak over his sobs. Fivin remains quiet, clearly surprised by what has happened.
Lumen does see a few small piles of notes scattered about on both the table and the shelves, and he's easily able to grab them.
Nym Durnodel - Aspiring Heroes of Faerûn // Danica Amastacia - Red Dead Annihilation
