As they creep closer, Nym's eyes dart from the Troll to the faintly glowing ball behind it and glancing at the others as Lumen asks about hitting it, decides to even the playing field a bit in their advantage. Murmuring in Undercommon, "Qunnessaa chath." Before the Faerie Fire spell encompassing the 20 foot radius area around the Troll and will-o-the-wisp. Not stopping there though, the cleric moves as close as she can get to the troll, attempting to be quiet.
[DC 14 Dexterity Saving throw or any attack roll against an affected creature or object has advantage if the attacker can see it, and the affected creature or object can't benefit from being invisible.]
You can all feel the intensity in the air as you all peer out into the forest, trying to keep the beastly troll in sight while it plods with an eerie quietness through the trees. Lumen's discordant melody breaks the silence, and at once, you can see the monster turn and retreat away from you, fading even further back into the forest. Lumen, Alae and Nym can track its faint shape as it withdraws, although with the increasing cover of the thick forest, it's hard to see.
Of course, Lumen knows that this is likely a temporary reprieve. While lesser creatures may possibly succumb to the fear of his magic, a vicious, monstrous troll is unlikely to be deterred for long.
Reinforcing her position, Chrys advances 25 feet and ends up right alongside Lumen and Nym. Her eyes scan the forest, looking for the troll, but even with the enhanced Darkvision bestowed upon her by Nym, she still cannot spot its new position after its retreat.
She is still able to see the eerie, slowly bobbing light of the wisp, as you all are... and then suddenly, you're not.
In an instant, the light blinks out and completely disappears from sight. It might have moved behind one of the trees, although in your mind, you realize that it has probably extinguished itself, at least temporarily, which means that you now have absolutely no idea where it is, or if has moved from its current position.
Your attention is suddenly diverted, though, by the cracking of sticks and tramping footfalls as you catch sight of the troll once again. The effects of Lumen's spell have worn off, and it is now approaching you in a full-on sprint as it bashes its way through the forest towards you with surprising speed. A few moments ago, it was deep in the woods, about 100 feet away, but it has now closed most of that distance and is now inside the clearing, only 30 feet away from Lumen, Chrys and Nym, and 45 feet away from Kess and Alae, who are a few feet behind the others.
Nym reacts quickly and casts her Faerie Fire spell on the troll, since the wisp is now well out of sight.
Troll DEX Save: 13
You all watch as the troll becomes outlined in a faint, but visible glow of violet colored light, which now makes it much more easy to see in the dim light of night. (Advantage on any attacks against it.)
Kess is up, and Lumen and Chrys can also take their turn. I'll act for Alae.
((Oh yea!! I've missed this!! And don't worry about the map, at least for now. As I said, the basic map I have loaded doesn't really add anything to our game. It just shows distances, which we can describe here. I actually have Foundry VTT, so if the DnD Beyond maps don't work very well, maybe we can try that system. I'll look into it further. However, I do prefer theater of the mind. It's worked fine for us so far, and it does more for the imagination.))
Where had that wisp gone? Could it be Valarken, returned to seek revenge so soon? Or just another wandering, hungry spirit? Either way, such things were dangerous, and spirits should not be allowed to linger.
A great crash and crunch of wood signals the return of the troll, which comes striding into the clearing, Lumen, Chrys and Nym closest and within its sights. It must not reach them!
Alae dashes forward to stand just in front of them, and clutches at the crystal which hangs from her neck. Her eyes seem to cover with silvery frost, and she roars silently at the troll, her breath glittering and swirling with ice as she channels the dragon blood which was passed down to her over so many generations.
Rime's Binding Ice 3rd level: CON save 14 from the Troll. Failed save: Cold damage 22, hindered by ice formations for 1 minute Successful save: half damage, not hindered by ice
As Alae dashes forward and positions herself between her companions and the troll, she is surprised to see just how big this monster actually is. While most trolls are a head or two taller than the average firbolg, this one is considerably taller and more muscular, possessing the same kind of reckless aggression that these creatures are known for.
Holding her crystal tightly in her hand, she casts her spell, even with slight pangs of doubt in the back of her mind, knowing full well how much fortitude the average troll has, and this one is clearly stronger than normal. A swirling cone of frost and tiny ice shards flies forth from her free hand completely envelops the giant, mottled humanoid in a blinding cloud of white...
Troll CON Save 7
When the spray ends, you see the troll sanding there, completely frozen and encased in a layer of ice, unable to move. The energy passed down through generations of her dragon blood has proved itself strong today, and at least for now, Alae has succeeded in protecting her companions.

Chrys blinks as the troll suddenly appears and presents itself as a feast for them. "Huh," she says, a grin forming. "Duin, show 'em yer mercy," she mumbles, staring down the troll as she marks it as her quarry. Then she runs forward as fast as she can... and finds she's out of breath, with the troll just out of the reach of her hammer. Growing annoyed, she reaches around her back and pulls out spear after spear, chucking them both at the iced troll.

Lumen watches Alae jump ahead of the group and at first begins to object, and then is bowled over by the arcane display. He uncovers his eyes, amazed that the monster is frozen in place. He moves to the side, and looks around for the will-o-the-wisp. If he sees it, he lets loose some vicious mockery (7 psychic damage on a failed WIS 16 save). If the will-o-the-wisp is not visible, he targets the troll. He stays out of melee range of the beast's long arms.
"That was nicely done, Alae," he says, offering her inspiration (Kess has it don't forget!)
OOC: I hope you all don't mind, but i just wanted to say that I think it is awesome that this game is still going! hope you all are having a blast! Have fun.
OOC: Hi Wreckers, great to hear from you!! Yes, we're underway again after a break, but the crew is still going strong! We miss you, and Krackle is forever in everyone's memory. I hope the little fella is doing ok out there in the big world these days! I've saved his sheet just in case he needs to make a reappearance, whether as an NPC, or if you would want to come back as a guest someday!
OOC: I took a break for a while as well. I only got back into the PBP a few months ago. Life had been pretty crazy and I had changed jobs. I am in a few PBP games but have been taking it slow so I don't over commit and then get stressed out about posting. I found your this thread again a few days ago and was flipping through the pages remembering old times. I remember Lumen and Chrys, and I remember krackle hiding out in backpacks because he didn't want to cause trouble... and getting possessed by an evil mask :P If you ever need a Krackle cameo, I could probably make an appearance. it looks like you guys are doing great and I wish you all the best! Have a good one. I'll get out of the way now :P
((After that wonderful intermission from our old friend Wreckzors, we now return to the battle. I'll go for Kess, just to keep things moving.))
Watching the troll crash back out of the forest and make a beeline straight for her three companions, Kess advances and joins the front line, taking up a position next to Chrys. Now 20-25 feet away from the troll, she gets a much closer look at how much larger this one is than others that she has fought in the past.
Knowing from experience that fire is the most effective weapon against a troll's natural regenerative trait, she points at the beast, speaks an arcane command and lets loose a Fire Bolt that sails towards the monster. Her aim is aided by the glowing rim of faint light that Nym cast upon the creature, (rolling with advantage in game log - Attack: 13, 8), and also with inspiration bestowed upon her by Lumen (Bardic Inspiration die roll: 8)
With this added encouragement, Kess is able to focus more intently, and you wall watch as the firefly projectile sails forth and slams with a bright flash into the troll's rubbery, mottled, brown torso. (Damage: 11)
It is then that Alae cast her Blinding Ice spell, which has temporarily frozen the troll.
Round 2
Unable to spot the wisp, which has seemingly blinked out of sight, Lumen focuses his attack on the troll once again, (WIS Save: 11) and causes even more psychic damage upon the still-frozen creature.
That's when Chrys, who is now within range, casts her own magic and hucks a pair of javelins at the beast that towers well over two times her height. One of the weapons slams into the troll's left thigh, drawing a stream of blackish blood that trickles down its leg, while the other bounces off of the ice that currently encases it.
Clearly furious, suffering from numerous attacks, and perhaps a bit confused by the magic that has it trapped and immobile, the troll flails its arms and legs wildly, with enough relentless force to break free from the ice. Shedding the last of the frost crystals from its body, it begins a retreat back into the thicker woods beyond the clearing, trying to gain some cover from the trees. It is now 60 feet away from Nym, Lumen, Chrys and Kess. There is still no sign of the wisp.
"Watch out!" Kess cried out to her companions as the thunder of crackling ice boomed through the boughs of the forest, the troll thrashing about and snarling angrily as it broke free and sprinted into the trees. Though it wasn't quite as cold and snow-covered (at least for the better part of the year), Kess was familiar with the potential dangers of the woods from her memories at home. "Don't follow it; if we chase, there's a good chance we walk into a trap. Let it come to us!"
Holding steady, Moonpetal in her left hand, Kess would mutter an incantation and hold a Firebolt at the ready in her right, held in case the troll or anything dangerous charged the Dawnbringers from the darkness; the flames danced along her fingertips and in her palm.
"Huh," Chrys says. "Well, if it's afraid o' me, then it's got the right idea in that pea-brain," she scoffs. "Stil, I'm more worried 'bout that wispy thing." She separates slightly from the group, standing a bit (15') away from the others and closes her eyes. Inhaling deeply, she prays. "Duin, my eyes are weak. You gotta show me where that wily wisp is hidin' right now." When her eyes open, they glow a brief shade of golden, inexorably and divinely drawn to the presence of all undead creatures in her vicinity.
Move: 15' away from the others so we're not bunched up, not necessarily towards the troll Action: Divine Sense (locate the wisp if it's not behind total cover within 60') Optional Bonus Action: if the Wisp is within 10' of Chrys, Vow of Enmity

Lumen nods at Chrys' wisdom, and keeps his eyes sharp, and prepares another vicious mockery for the wisp if he sees it, and troll if not. 2 psychic damage.
"Who are you, and what do you want?"he asks in a strong performance voice.
As Kess keeps her eyes trained on the forest watching out for the troll, or any other creatures that might show themselves, Chrys walks a few feet ahead towards the eastern side of the clearing and calls for divine aid from her dwarven deity.
When she opens her eyes, Chrys is surprised to feel a brief, but cold shiver run through her body as her senses indicate a foul, noxious evil undead presence so very close to her, and although she cannot see the invisible creature, which she is certain that Velarken the wisp is currently only feet away from her.
Immediately, she shouts out its location, although the rest of you cannot see it with your own eyes either. Unfortunately, this means that Lumen cannot cast Vicious Mockery upon it... at least not until it becomes visible.
However, when he speaks to the wisp, you all hear it answer, in a faint, sickly whisper, where each word slowly lingers like despair in your ears. From the proximity of the voice, Lumen would surmise that the wisp has moved somewhere in front of him, but at the same time, the sound appears eerily distant. Still able to sense its location, Chrys knows that it has indeed moved closer towards the bard, although it has remained invisible.
"I am one of far more importance than you... and I want what is owed to me... Sorrow. Pain. Misery of those who have wronged me..."
Nym nods at Kess' words of caution, holding back taking off after the Troll and instead her eyes follow Chrys' pointing finger. But all she could see was Lumen. Invisible then. Clicking her tongue in annoyance, the cleric let go of her concentration on maintaining the spell surrounding the Troll and instead focused on the area around Lumen and cast Faerie Fire once more. Circling closer to Lumen with careful steps.
{Once more with feeling:} [DC 14 Dexterity Saving throw or any attack roll against an affected creature or object has advantage if the attacker can see it, and the affected creature or object can't benefit from being invisible.]
Using the eerie whisper and also Chrys's indication as a point of reference, Nym casts her spell towards the area where she thinks the wisp is located.
When the incantation is finished, you see both Lumen and Kess light up with a faint colored aura around them, but that's all. The wisp seems to be somehow unaffected by the magic, or it has escaped the effects of the spell, and it remains invisible.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.

As the presumably invisible wisp speaks, Alae tries to focus on the location of the spirit. Chrys' directions aid her too, but she pauses briefly. Her strongest magic has quite a wide spread, and Lumen and Chrys would surely be caught in it. She would have to channel her power into something more precise, but likely weaker.
"You are certainly owed pain, spirit, and we shall give it!"
She releases a solid blue beam so cold that it lets off steam where the air touches it, which streaks towards the space where, she hopes, the wisp is hiding in plain sight.
As they creep closer, Nym's eyes dart from the Troll to the faintly glowing ball behind it and glancing at the others as Lumen asks about hitting it, decides to even the playing field a bit in their advantage.
