Pass Without Trace will expire shortly; Invisibility has ended.
Boko has learned some things from the few fish that she can find in these waters. The sahuagin are most active at night, she learns, sending ocean patrols out to hunt and pillage at night from the lower southern gate. Under the causeway is usually a safe place to hide from sahuagin, they report, although they cannot say what happens above the surface.
The party begins to track the pair of sahuagin who disappeared into the marsh. Where Kei cannot find any trail, Boko quickly finds their tracks in the mud. Soon, those of you who can see in the dark spot the hapless creatures scratching in a mud pool with their spears, perhaps 250 feet from the base of the causeway. They do not see you.
"This darkness will be the death of me" he blurts as he stumbles through the marsh nearly falling multiple times. When the party stops he questions with a whisper "What's going on? Are they near?"
A thin marsh trail arcs to the left into the dead scrubby marsh before disappearing into a network of natural pools and canals. The two sahuagin are some 250 feet ahead , thigh-deep in icy muck, scratching in the mud with spears. They appear to be pulling up long wriggling worms out of the foul-smelling pools and stowing them in sacks. They do not see you, but approaching within 100 feet of them seems impossible without extreme stealth. Boko's spell is due to expire soon, so any sort of openly stealthy approach (short of polymorphing or invisibility, etc.) must be made soon (and at high-ish DC within that last 100 feet.)
It is not pitch dark; the sky glows with what is likely a bright moon behind a wall of clouds. Nevertheless, it is dark. The boom of the breakers on the shore overwhelms other sounds. The fortress remains dark and quiet.
Qivys waits and ponders on what to do next. "They seem ta be on a lunch break." he whispers. "What do ya want ta do with 'em?" he asks the group in a hushed tone.
”I think that we should try and use the opportunity of their return to get into the front doors, or at least draw all the guards out after the illusory escaping prisoners and see what advantage we can take of the situation,” says Gerrard, adding, “Maybe we can rest while we plan and they are…harvesting worms.”
"I like the escaping prisoners illusion idea. My only question is how do we get back out, assuming they return before we want to leave?" Boko says at a whisper.
The doors open again. You scramble for additional cover. Four more sahuagin emerge. These four look more determined, marching with purpose. Two wield war hammers. They head down the causeway in your direction, toward the marsh, although they give no indication of seeing you. The doors slam shut once again.
“We may have no choice but to fight them. I can call forth a fog cloud to hide us if that would help. I can also conjure some animals, like two giant octopuses, or a constrictor snake, to confuse and fight them. I also have that whistle we found, to raise a corpse. Should we find ourselves with a corpse I could send one back into the fort and surprise and confuse them as to the nature of who was here,”Boko says at a whisper as they see the four new arrivals exit the fort and begin to approach. She tries to find any cover she can get.
There is plenty of cover below the low scrubby bluffs along the foul-smelling river bank, which you soon retreat to. The four sahuagin march by with the air of a war party on a mission. They, too, take to the shallow icy waters of the marsh, heading north into the desolate nighttime swampscape, but they seem to be headed in a different trajectory than the worm harvesters. The two groups don't even seem to acknowledge each other.
”I wonder where they are going,” ponders Gerrard in a whisper. “If they have some observation location or forward camp nearby, Saltmarsh will definitely need to know,” he continues after they are well enough away to not hear whispers.
”Shall we follow them?” he asks.

Two separate groups wandering around gives Kei cause for concern. While the foragers seem like the easier group to handle, Gerrard's idea of following the war party makes most sense. "As much as I think we should leave with what we have, and our lives, I think following and maybe eliminating the warriors will net us the greatest benefit. I am with Gerry's idea." He moves to stand next to the noble as if picking sides. His frustration surrounding his idea abated.
The four sahuagin continue to wade deeper into the swamp, northward, to the right of the foragers, parallel to (and perhaps a hundred feet from the western side of) the sluggish river.
The two foragers continue pulling worms from the shallow pools.
The door to the fortress remains closed and quiet.
"Seems a better idea than waiting here to watch worm harvesting. Let's try to flank the war party wide of the harvesters and see where they go,"Boko says.
Boko perceives the best way to track the war party, out-of-sight of both groups, at least initially: by following the edge of the river bank northward into the great swamp, remaining low behind the slightly elevated row of scrub along the river's edge. It's slow and muddy, but out of the direct vision of both groups.

Qivys lowers down closer to the ground to lower his profile and aid in keeping from being spotted.
"It seems more are on lunch." he whispers.
Gerrard:
“Either that, or we are on the menu, Master Quivys,” whispers Gerrard wryly as he hides as well.

Is there any cover for us at all where we are?
