"This guy had a hat that resembled the same types of black hats the two kobolds lighting the lamps wear. What kind are those jobs? Skilled or unskilled?"
Bey scans the list as well, but not with quiet the same amount of detailed inspection perhaps as the others. She‘s been in Darkwater for a shorter amount of time than the rest of the group, and she has has little interaction with the other villagers. Most of her time here has been spent with Mith, Azure, Norge and Tiriana.
“Is there anyone you know on that list?” She asked the others.
As Jorge begins inspecting the list, Wrenchawitz looks towards Mitt as he asks about the hats. "Really!?"The gnome would gasp... looking rather shocked and a bit afraid. "Well.. if they were wearing black hats like those.. then they would have been one of the unskilled labor works then.." He would as he rubs his chin and look up towards the ceiling with a worried expression."I have many townsfolk that perform a number of duties that wear that particular uniform... everything from sanitation, lantern lighting, ditch digging, and even helping with construction... I do say the "Black hats" as I call them to make up the largest group of those that work for the town of Darkwater... " The mayor would finish with a frown. "I'll be honest... While I am in charge of the town.. I do let Mr. Leadbelly handle most of the hiring and overseeing day to day operations. Perhaps he would know more about the mystery figure... but I tall dark figure in the fog isn't much to go off of I am afraid. Those hats are fairly common around town as you all I'm sure have seen... The ruffian could have stolen one for all we know." The Gnome would say with an exhausted sigh. "Mr. Leadbelly works with Irontail to secure new hires. It would probably be good to speak with him as well. He is the one that supplied the coin that will be your reward after all. This illness is bad for business.."
(Azure would know that Leeroy Leadbellly is captain of the guard and Azure's superior officer... as well as the right hand man to Mayor Wrenchawitz. He is a stocky redheaded dwarf that is rarely seen without a drink in his hand, regaurdless of whether or not he is on duty)
As Jorge takes the note and inspects it.. he cannot help but feel a combination of shock and sorrow at some of the names on the list. Once he was done then pass it around so that everyone got a chance to look. Although the list was quite long.. probably close to a quarter of the town.... there were a handful of names that really seemed to stick out..
Cascade - female water genasi - Blacksmith at Ember and Ice -3 days Gwen Shimmerstrand - female elf - Owner of Old Oddities general store - 1week Mucor - male minotaur - Owner of Mushrooms & More apothecary - 1 week Oscar - male grung - Owner of Fish & Ships - 2 weeks Bog - Female Kobold - Sanitation worker - 2 weeks
When Mith is finally given the list, he cannot help but notice that many of the kobolds that reside within the sewers are on the list...
Norge turns to his friends and asks, "What does everyone think? It looks like we have several ways to go about this. We could start with talking to Leadbelly which may not be a bad idea. Azure knows him and since he's the captain of the guard he probably has a lot of connections. Do you think your captain would have any information for us, Azure?
Before Azure has a chance to respond Norge continues as though pondering to himself. "I guess we could also talk to Irontail to see if he recalls hiring any employees who may have seemed a bit off. Someone tall with a black hat might not be much to go off of but perhaps he will recall some sort of behavioral trait."
Norge pauses for a moment before continuing and turning to Mitt. "What about you Mitt? Have you heard any rumors in the sewers that might be able to help us out? It seems like a lot of kobolds have been impacted by this illness."
As Norge takes another look at the list a look of shock comes across his face. "Wait a minute! Cascade is on this list! Azure, isn't that your mother? I don't remember you telling us she was sick."
"By Silvanus," Jorge says, shaking his head. "The foul plague will wipe out the town in a couple months if something isn't done about it."
What are the locations of the different individuals? Is there a certain geographic order that would be logical? By the way, if the group travels anywhere near Jorge's house, he'll suggest stopping by and grabbing his shield. He's kicking himself for leaving it at home.
Azure appears to squint in pain as each person talks and looks sheepish as he responds, "Yes. She has it. She's taking it better than most so far. I think the herbs she's been eating are helping keep the sickness at bay for the most part. Leadbelly would probably be our best source of information. He seems to know everything and everyone in Darkwater. It's getting late though... we should probably rest and return here first thing in the morning to begin laying out a plan."
Azure's head throbbed in pain the longer they sat as the adrenaline wore off. He didn't want to listen to anymore plans or theories. He wanted to rest, for his head to quit hurting and for this nightmare to end. His head swirled with thoughts and it just made his headache worse.
"I don't know anything other than what anyone else knows. The local kobolds are integrated into society though really only out at night so whatever this is it's affecting all times. But this guy seems so far to be out at night. And he seems to know what's going on in town since he knew the town was gathered at the inn so it was a good place to attack. I agree with Azure. Let's rest and meet back up to plan tomorrow."
"Don't worry, Azure. We'll get to the bottom of this and find a cure. Your mom and the other townsfolk will be back up and on their feet in no time." Norge tries to comfort his friend the best he can while trying to convince himself that things will be ok. "You guys are right though. We should probably call it a day and get some rest. This has been a rough night and we're not going to accomplish much in this condition."
Jorge gets to his feet. "Just in case there's a trail to grow cold," he says, sounding as tired as Azure, "could one of you show me where you saw this man in a black hat tonight? Or at least tell me where he was so I can go look around a bit?"
Bey reacts with dismay when she hears the others count the high number of plague victims on the list and also how may of those people are known to her companions, especially when upon learning that one of them is Azure’s own mother.
“I am sorry, my friend,” she says to Azure, putting a hand on his shoulder in a tender hearted gesture. Since joining up with this group recently, Beyanna had seldom show outward acts of gentle affection, even to her new friends.
Throughout the past few weeks, and in the many months of previous travel before arriving in Darkwater, she had held onto her emotions tightly, and the only kind of expressions that most people did see from her were the occasional displays of anger and fearful intimidation that were reserved for those who crossed her or treated her or those around her in an unkind manner, especially if such acts or verbal intrusions were directed towards Tiriana.
During one evening a few weeks ago at the Muck and Maggots, a brutish traveler had made inappropriate advances towards the girl. Stepping in to defend the younger half elf, Beyanna had confronted the bearded, barbaric man with a menacing, glowing stare and a fearsome barrage of threatening words, some of which were uttered in a language not commonly spoken in the world of men and good folk. He fled in apparent terror and never returned.
Fortunately, with the evening noise and drunken revelry inside the inn, Bey’s frightening outburst was not seen or remembered by very many people. However, a few did see it, which only added to the uneasy reputation that seemed to go with her wherever she went. For most of her time in Darkwater, she kept to herself and had only started to let her guard down after spending regular time with Tir, Norge, Azure and Mith, although the affection she had just shown to Azure was a indeed a major crack in her tough exterior.
“You have my word, Azure, I will help you find a cure so that your mother may survive this plague.”
To Jorge, she answers, ”We were down in the cleaning near the old bait shop at the edge of the swamp. That’s where we saw this strange man in black. He appeared in a sudden and mysterious shroud of fog along the road. If you mean to go down there and look tonight, I will accompany you, but we should use caution. Otherwise, we can all go in the morning.”
"Whelp! I can't just let you all go by yourselves. Guess I'm coming along too! I wouldn't want you to be caught up in another stampede without some backup." Norge says and he jumps up from his chair.
Azure looks down at his blood covered shield then up to the others. "I wouldn't be a good guard if I left townsflolk go unaccompanied at night." and with a small smile Azure will slowly rise squinting slightly as he does so. "Let's make this quick though."
Jorge nods at the others, then looks back at the mayor. "We'll do our best to gather as much information we can find and report back. It may take a few days to speak with everyone and follow any leads those interviews may uncover, but we'll work quickly." He says his good-byes and then lumbers out to the street and toward Oscar the brung's boat and bait shop.
Along the way, he runs his hand through his shaggy, white hair. "I'm sorry I don't know most of you the way I should," the human says, not really meeting anyone's eyes. "This past year has been kind of a blur. Ever since I lost Evre, I haven't been as 'with it' as I should be. I'm afraid I've been rather selfish." He shakes his head. "To think that girl was concerned about me. Goes to show how genuine some people can be. Gives you something to aspire to. Used to be, I did that sort of thing: helped out and cared about people. It's time I got back to it, it is."
After everyone inspects the list and agrees to the job, The Mayor lets out a small sigh of relief. "Let me know if there is anything I can do to assist you in this matter. I bid you all goodnight..." He would say with a tip of his hat before making his way outside into the fog. The small figure disappears within moments of entering the mist and as you all exit the inn, Worm manages to close and lock the temporary door that he managed to put together for the night. You all hear a faint bell ring from inside the tavern, but otherwise she sound of silence fills the streets. It takes a few minutes but you all manage to make your way through the dimly lit streets and find your way to the scene of the battle. As you approach the intersection near the boat shop, you brace yourselves for the stench that you expect to encounter, but you never do. Once you arrive at the scene of the stampede that caused so much grief only a little over an hour ago... there is nothing. There are no bodies... no smell... only fresh footprints and pools of blood in the center of the road....
All investigation / survival rolls to look around the area will be at disadvantage unless someone is helping them.
Before he arrived in Darkwater, Norge had spent a fair amount of time in the woods living off the land. During that time he was forced to learn to survive on his own. Norge kneels down to inspect the footprints. He makes note of the pattern, the distance between steps, and the direction that they are facing. Next, he dips his index finger in the blood and rubs it against his thumb. Then Norge sniffs the blood to try and determine if it seems to come from a natural or unnatural source.
"Is this where she died?" Jorge asks solemnly, looking at the pools of blood. He stares at them in silence for a time before taking a deep breath and looking around. "These look interesting," he says, rubbing his nose and kneeling down to look at the footprints first.

How many on the list does Jorge know?
Jorge, his eyes more soft than hard, gives the mayor a nod. "This plague must be stopped. You can count on me to do whatever I can."
"I too will aid in this." Azure says sniffling and beginning to calm himself.
After Jorge is done with the list Azure will look over it and see how many he is familiar with.
