Verrynia hasn't reacted to anything the rest of the group has said until now, glaring at the cats instead. At Xarprax's response, however, she startles and turns back to everyone.
Is it time to see these amazing detective skills then?
Nilbit says he'll try and arrange a meeting for you that you'll get notified of when you return later today, and after a breakfast of both fresh bread and fruits or foraged berries you head out towards the fishermans docks to see Xarprax detective skills at work. Which is bound to be an amazing feat to behold.
You make your way through muddy streets and morning rain towards your destination. On the way there you pass the square where the Silver Yarn, the bar you hung out at the night before is located. On the contrary to the same night, the square is now crowded with people. Not a large crowd, maybe because of the rain, but a crowd nonetheless. The shops are open too, there are three shops on the edges of the square, a forge called Fire & Brimstone and two minor stores that might be general stores or something of the like.
You pass the town square and the turn a corner into a paved street. The cobblestone looks like it has been salvaged from the city itself. Only now is it you realise the scale of the buildings that once stood here and that the city is built on repurposed ancient ruins. A large stone pillar on your left, maybe 7 feet in diameter is resting half covered in rubble on the left side of the road. Whatever crumbled into the ruins you're standing in must have been enormous. After a while you reach the fishing docks.
Small ships and boats are docked along the jetties along the waterfront. Four small fishing boats and a larger ship seems like they're preparing to head out. By another small boat, at the end of one of the jetties is a lone fishing boat. In front of it stands a figure who is clearly frustrated. This is obvious to all of you because of the incessant cursing and the tone of their voice.

The man turns, a human, maybe in his later forties turns towards you. His hair greying by the temples and a short, scruffy beard is wet with sweat. "THE FOG?! THE FOG?! YEAH, I KNOW THAT DAMNED FOG! TOOK THE ENTIRETY OF YESTERDAYS CATCH." He points to his boat, his hand trembling with anger and frustration. The fisherman spits in the water by the boat and shakes himself a little calmer. "Fog only comes at night.. Who are you? New Scalecloak? I don't have any money to pay for an investigation. SINCE THE SOURCE OF MY F**** INCOME DISAPPEARS EVERY OTHER NIGHT!"

A man, currently on his way up the gangplank onto the ship waves at you. "Hey! Over here! We have been robbed too. Half of our ivory got stolen last night! If you find who did it I bet The Captain will pay ya!" He tosses a coil of rope onto the ship and comes toward you down the pier. "Though the fishermen has it worse, us whalers are hit by the thieving fog too. Can I help you with your investigation?"
Now that the deckhand has come close you see that it's a wood elf girl. Maybe early twenties. With short hair and a kerchief tied around her neck.

Xarprax gives the wood elf girl a toothy smile. "You say the captain will pay spits and spurts? OK, I'll solve the mystery. When does the fog usually come?"
"At night, after midnight and before dawn. As far as I know it varies from time to time." She shrugs. "To be fair, none of us know a lot. Things disappear in a crazy fog that makes gibbering noises and we stay away." She realises she has withheld some information. "Oh, yeah! People claims that the fog gives off a series of weird gibbering and droning voices. Some of us believe it is ghost-fog others think it is a curse or something. To be honest. I think they're ghosts." She shudders.

The cover of fog rolling in at night has always been used by thieves, and apparently that's exactly what the Pursecutters do here, but you would know that. There's something more than whispering in the night that has you spooked. What are you hiding?
The young elf gives Verrynia a confused look. "If the Pursecutters steal our catch they break thr agreement with the boss. As long as it is on our ship it is protected by Blacktooth Shorah, head of Maritime Business. You're definetly new here.. Though I suppose that ghosts wouldn't want fish.."
She looks up at Gunnars massive fully armored form. "That sounds weird.. I wanna say.. mister. Or do you prefer something else? Sorry I've never met someone like you before" The elf scrathes the back of her head.

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
From Verrynia's perspective as a pirate, thieves using the fog at night is a normal thing. Her old crew would have done this themselves on occasion. Hearing people who work at the docks claim this is unusual immediately makes her suspicious.

The girl looks like she knows what you're talking about, but there is some underlying fear. She glances at the water every now and then during your conversation. When she mentions the deal with Blacktooth Shorah it looks like she really believes in her statement and that the Pursecutters couldn't steal stuff from the ship without getting in trouble.
The girl shifts nervously. "Officer? Like, the mainland type? You're not a scalecloak then? I'm glad." She covers her mouth and looks behind her at a man with a dark blue and black cloak around his shoulders passing by on the streets. "They're kind of greedy. Claims we have to pay them for just about every service, the damn sharks." She steps back again keeping a 6 ft gap between you and her. "Why something living in fog is weird to me? I dunno. What do you do if your house just moves around all the time? And what if a wind or nice sunny weather disperses it?" She shrugs.
Krumdak takes a little walk up and down the pier pondering on gibbering fog and other oddities. (Perception for looking around and nature or arcana for weird fog, Krumdak)
