Girell takes them, and reads them both. She then pockets them and does not return them.
That's as expected. But I'm not asking you to hand your charge over to me now. Just to let me take a look inside the carriage. But whatever. Stay here. If you try anything, it will go badly for you. She clearly looks suspicious, and moves away to have a brief conversation in hushed whispers with one of the guards, who takes off running down the street.
"The Lawmaster will be here shortly. We'll all just have to wait. And if you'll take my advice, let's not have any surprises today, eh?"
Will you say or do anything, or just wait for the Lawmaster to come?
It's a long, somewhat awkward wait for the Lawmaster; the Crownsguard don't seem keen to interact with you, but they respect your wishes and keep their distance from the carriage, though they never take their eyes off it.
A dwarven woman stomps into the alley, followed by six armed Crownsguard who are barely managing to keep up. She's wearing official robes of gold and white, and looks tired but determined. She looks around, taking in the scene, then walks up towards you. "I am Lawmaster Orentha. I've got Hector's note," and she pats a bag she's carrying, "I know who you are and what your business is. Plus I had advance warning. So I'm assuming this is bad news. Let me have it."
"Alright." Alton takes in a deep breath and slowly lets it out, "The prisoners we were in charge of were, um, I guess rescued; for a lack of a better term. It was late last night, or early this morning; its hard to tell when you don't have much of a view of the sky. Anyway, it was my turn to take watch over the carriage and I was sitting on the back step quietly playing my lute; looking around the ally and up at what little of the sky I could see. I was working on some new stories to tell about my friends and I adventures and I figured I'd use the time to work out some music to go with them. I was getting a nice groove going on for one of the stories when I was suddenly hit with a strong feeling of being sleepy; and not like the sleepy you feel after a long day and a hot meal. This more like you're going about your business during the day and out of nowhere you have this strong urge to take a nap and no matter how much you fight it the ground and wall look comfortable. Anyway, that what happened to me and I did try to shake it off but I just couldn't; it was like all my energy just left me. The next thing I know I'm waking up to the sounds of people starting to go about their morning business. I check the carriage and the prisoners were gone; then I go get Silent and Balassar as they were sleeping inside of the inn. Silent waited by the carriage while I stop Balassar from causing a potential scene when he rushed off to tell any Crownsguard passing by what happened and convinced him that we should just wait here for Lawmaster Stonegrasp to show up. I honestly thought it would have been earlier than this, but that's on me for assuming. Oh, Balassar did manage to find some tracks leading from the carriage down to another alleyway that had an unguarded sewer cover; which he said wasn't right for the cover to be unguarded. Then we just waited here for y'all to show up."

Alton, the Lawmaster follows your story, looking unhappy but not angry. Or particularly surprised. As you come to a close, she nods for the Crownsguard to go over to the carriage to inspect it, which they do.
"Well, then. So we still have enemy infiltrators in the city." She definitely does not sound surprised about this. "Happily these two were not indispensable. Their leader is already securely under lock and key." She shakes her head. "Well, no matter. The enemy undoubtedly spent time and effort planning this little rescue, and that means resources that could have been directed on harming our troops was instead wasted on recovering two unimportant soldiers. This is still a win, or at least I think the Righteous Brand will tell me it is. Now, I want you to show me directly where these tracks led to. It was Balassar who followed them?" She looks at Balassar directly, seemingly knowing who each of you are already.
At the same dark alley, less dark now in the daylight, and at the same entrance to the sewers, nothing appears to have changed.
The Lawmaster inspects the scene, and then gives orders to the Crownsguard to search the area, and then speaks to the three of you.
"We will send a scout patrol below. I doubt the enemy will be easy to find. Most likely they will have made their way out by the same way they entered. And no, I have no idea what method that is. I suspect magic - it must be costly and difficult, otherwise they could have an army invading us from below at any moment - so likely something that can only be done for a small number. I would ask that you do not attempt to follow or investigate yourselves; it would likely put you in danger, and I would not wish that. You've completed your task, as best you could, and it's no fault of yours that this has happened." She sighs, and seems to think carefully about what to say next. "I'm afraid I must ask you to stay in the city for a few days, three at the most. I will need to inform certain parties of what has happened, and they may wish to question you directly. I doubt it, but in order to avoid someone chasing you across the Empire, please do stay here for a while. At the Song and Supper, I would suggest, so I know where to find you."
She stops, studying your faces to assess your reaction to this.

"We do have letters if you wish to see them."

Girell frowns again, looking even more suspicious. She holds out her hand for the papers.
Alton nudges Balassar to hand over the letters.

Balassar just shrugs and walks towards a wall.
“We’ll this should be interesting then.” He whispers to himself as he leans against a wall just waiting for the Lawmaster.
Silent attempts to catch Alton's eye and raises his eyebrows in a questioning gesture, but says and does nothing else.
Alton scratches the back of his neck and gives his topknot a few tugs as he waits for the captain to return with the Lawmaster.

Balassar just nods as he begins to lead them to the grate they found “This way, grate was unlocked and the guards normally posted were not there.”
Several guards remain to look after the carriage; they appear to be preparing to take it away.
The Lawmaster gestures to Silent and Alton to join her and Balassar - will they?
Silent follows.
Alton follows as well.
