Backing away, Rhane returns to the companions and whispers, “A large group waits in ambush below. Does anyone have magic or alchemy to make a distracting explosion below before we rush into the teeth of their defenses?”

"Perhaps a more mundane distraction, then--something they will shoot on when they see it, then we can rush them while they are reloading," suggests Rhane, asking, "Anyone think they can mock up a convincing decoy of a person climbing down the ladder?"

Balassar just looks at them all as an idea hits him “What if we just tired a rope around one of the bodies and lowered it slowly down? Could even tie rope to each limb, like a puppet to make look like the arms and legs are moving.”
Seib admits it would take her well over an hour and some valuables to bring Brodi the owl back.
She can excavate some earth above or below the ladder if that would help. She can make some basic lights or sounds as a distraction, or light or put out candles or torches if that would help.
She offers to make two people invisible if that would help. (Almost pitched her going down the ladder invisible and then moving in a group of them and then thunder stepping back up but that seems unlikely to work.) She could make herself look like Sebastian but not sound like him.
Balassar just nods as he walks back out and grabs the nearest enemy body dragging it back to the group "Who has the rope?" he asks looking at them as he pulls out his own rope offering it up for the plan.
Darren removes his rope from his pack and holds it out for someone to take and use should it be needed. He’ll also help tie knots if needed. (Since as a sailor he should be good at that…)
If you want to create a puppet effect and manipulate the body, you will need to use several ropes, yes. I think it will be a skill check from whoever is leading on the creation of this things, perhaps a general DEX check, with advantage if others are helping.
”I’d be happy to handle a rope or two,” offers Rhane, who appears to be rather dexterous, “and if Sieb is willing to add some proper magical noises so it sounds like one of us trying to sneak down, that would be helpful too. We will just need to be ready to flood down the ladder once they have done their initial attack so we can perhaps catch them while they are reloading.”
”Maybe one of us could add to the deception by whispering down to the decoy about needing to be quiet, does he see anything, etc,” Rhane adds.
Alton hands over his rope to the project too and goes to work on the corpse, using his disguise kit, to make it look less like one of the brigands and more like an adventurer. "I can try to throw my voice to make it sound like they are talking back."

Be excellent to each other, and roll for initiative dudes!
It's practically life-like. You use the brigands' clothing to conceal the ropes; from a distance they just look like hair. It won't fool anyone up close, but from further away it will look like a live adventurer, at least for a few seconds. More than that... well, that will depend on the performance that goes with it.
Darren steels himself for the upcoming fight. “Who goes down after it?” He inquires while looking at Balasar thinking he will probably want to go first. Darren offers to enhance one weapon for the group with magic.
(magic weapon I was thinking Balassar would be able to make best use of it. But whomever would like it is fine with me)
Rhane, you see - and hear - the slightest of movement, flickering of the shadows. A large group is waiting in ambush below, you expect.
(I would assume no-one is speaking up about the crate at the moment)

Any responses?
Darren shrugs his shoulders, “nothing that would be all that distracting I don’t think. Rough em up a little yes.”
Alton shakes his head, "I don't have anything either."

Balassar just shrugs “I have my sword…did we maybe pass some explosives on the way without noticing?”

The hole with the ladder leading down waits silently for your decision.

Rhane:
”Great idea,” says Rhane, “Let’s do it.” He moves to help Balassar set up the ruse.

We haven’t taken a short rest right?

Alton, you can make a DEX check and add your proficiency bonus to make the puppet work and to disguise it as an enemy, if you wish.
Dex + Proficiency: 25(Nat 20!) for the puppetry and the disguise
Edit: Forgot to add the +3 for proficiency, so 28 in total
