Anakis lets out a big sigh and slumps her shoulders, "We got lost down here and stumbled across your garden. We're trying to find the way out." She then perks up and smiles at the creature, "My name is Anakis, and these are my friends. Would you be able to help us get to out and to the surface? I'd be ever so grateful." (Persuasion if you want it: 19).
She scratches the dull dark green hair on her head for a second and says, "Yeah, Kroruk help. Kroruk tell surface people go back the way you came. Kroruk no like surface! Kroruk stay down here in the dark. Keep shiny coins safe for Kroruk."
"They are nice and shiny," Anakis nods, "And I don't really like the surface sometimes either, but my friends here need to get back. We have had so many twists and turns, it's like a maze down here! Do you know the path up? If you could tell us the quickest way to the surface, maybe I could add to your coins?" With that, Anakis reaches in to her bag and pulls out a handful of coins and holds them up for Kroruk to see.
(OOC - she's not offering all her coins, just those in here hand.)
You see an avaricious gleam in Kroruk's eyes as she considers your offer. Make a DC 12 Charisma check to see if she accepts or if she decides she wants your money without telling you the way out.
"How much coins in that little pack you got?" asks Kroruk, her eyes growing wide. She looks through the doorway and sees the sacks the halflings are carrying and the heavy backpacks worn by the party members. "Little folk not steal Kroruk coins," she says, surveying her treasure carefully, "but you steal somebody coins, and now you want Kroruk help you escape. Nuh-uh!"
"You leave coins here," she says pointing a large taloned finger at Anakis, "and Kroruk let you go!"
Aluzira stays silent watching as Anakis and Kroruk talk feeling a bit guilty about what they did to her garden upon seeing her tears, but knows that they did what they thought was best in the moment.
Yeah, I wasn't sure if you knew you had it, but yes, I would say you do have inspiration.
And yes, everyone on your side is outside of the chamber, just outside of a door which opens onto the chamber.
Kroruk is standing in an opening about twenty-five or so feet away on the other side of the chamber. She hasn't stepped into the chamber because she seems to not want to disturb the mushrooms and make them start shrieking again.
Anakis looks back and forth between Kroruk, the shrieking mushrooms, the coin in her hand, and finally her group. Well, Mr. Mask, she calls out to the Lord of Shadow in her mind, This hasn't gone at all as I had hoped. Is this what you wanted? She looks back to Kroruk and places the coins back in her bag while she maintains eye contact. She smiles at Kroruk, and quietly says to the others, "Run." She waits for the group to begin to move, then Anakis uses Thaumaturgy to slam the doors shut and she turns and runs.
"Hey! Wait!" Kroruk yells as everyone begins to run, and she begins moving forward into the chamber causing the five living mushrooms to begin shrieking loudly. Roll initiative!
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Anakis' Initiative: 10
(DM Question - would we get an extra round/surprise round for catching Kroruk off guard for our sudden run/slamming the door on her? Happy to roll something to check if you want.)
The reason for initiative is that those actions (running and slamming the door) are being contested/opposed by actions that Kroruk could take in response. I think the stakes of the situation were pretty clear as far as what Kroruk wanted. If you're not going to give her what she wants, then she's not going to let you go, not without some kind of fight. So it isn't about who says they do a thing first. Everyone gets to act. I hope that answers the question. Assume Kroruk (and most other creatures) is just about as capable of doing things suddenly as you are.
I'm happy to discuss my thoughts about the rules in this regard if you have any more questions.
Another way to look at it is I already asked for a check to see if Kroruk was caught off guard. It's called initiative, and it looks like Kroruk basically won. Just waiting on Aluzira's result...

When you tell everyone to run, Anakis, the halflings take off down the hall at full trot, expecting everyone to follow. As everyone turns to run, however, Kroruk takes a few large strides across the chamber, holds the door open with her club, and tries to grab you, Anakis, with her free hand. "Jus' where you think you going?" she belows in your face as loudly as she can over the sound of the shrieking mushrooms.
Grapple: 7
Anakis, make a Strength or Dexterity check (your choice!) to see if Kroruk succeeds in grappling you. On a tie, you win.
Seeing Kroruk grab Anakis, Aluzira starts humming a mysterious but bold sounding tune hoping it can be heard above the screeching and give Anakis [Tooltip Not Found]

(Edit: I keep forgetting about inspiration... that probably would have been super helpful with that last roll :( )
