You move forward, Balassar taking the lead, seeing through colourless darkvision, with Alton twenty feet behind and Wash a further twenty feet behind Alton, his lantern casting light foward so that Wash can just make out the shape of the dragonborn as he moves forward.
Balassar, what you see is a tunnel that extends before you. As you move further along, you see that it opens up eventually into a larger space; you think you see tables and chairs, so perhaps a dining area. Only ten feet ahead of you, you can now see that there's an opening in the left wall; a new tunnel heads off in that direction.
Are you attempting to move quietly? If so, make a Stealth check (with disadvantage for your armour, I believe?) and everyone else please make a straight Stealth check.
Balassar, you reach the place where a new tunnel leads off to the south (to your left). Looking down it, you can see a large open space. This natural cavern is reinforced by support beams across its fifty-foot length. A smooth pillar of stone rises in the center of the cave to a height of eight feet, nearly touching the ten-foot-high ceiling. The tunnel continues beyond the cavern, curving abruptly to the west and out of sight. You notice that there is a small hand crossbow on the top of the stone pillar. It doesn't appear to be active.
Balassar, you move forward towards where you saw the tables. You enter a large cavern. Flickering lanterns illuminate it, and you see three tables surrounded by chairs. Three kobolds are sitting around the central table, playing cards for copper pieces. Mugs and scattered piles of playing cards litter the blade-scarred tabletops. A dozen small cloaks hang on the walls from metallic hooks. A passage to the south bends out of view, while rickety wooden doors obscure a cavern to the west. Another door on the north wall is partially ajar, while a passage to the northeast leads toward a dark cavern.
As you have made no attempt to stealth in, the kobolds spot you immediately and reach for their weapons.
Alton will motion to Wash that there might be danger up ahead by making a fist and extending his arm in the direction of Balassar. He will then move up next to Balassar and take a look into the room. If there is danger inside of the room that he can see, Alton will take aim and fire his crossbow; if not he will just wait.

Balassar just holds his shield up as he begins to walk across the hallway trying to check out the other side of the cavern.

There is danger. You shoot the nearest kobold through an eye, before it has even had a chance to stand up. Kobold 2 is dead.
Kobold 1 shoots at the dragonborn:

The bolt hits Balassar in the left thigh.
Kobold 3 gapes in shock at his slain friend, and with a murderous cry he takes aim at Alton:

This bolt also hits, though it sticks in less deep. Both kobolds move to back away a little, down the south passage.
Wash is up.

Wash moves up. Wash, you don't yet see the enemy, but you do see Alton firing into the space ahead.
