I've been playing 5e for about 2 years. Played the old Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale games back in high school and college and loved them. My cousin who is a lifelong D&D fan got me to play finally. Familiar with Discord but new to play-by-post. I'm in the Eastern US time zone. Have done Lost Mines of Phandelver, Dragon Heist, Dungeon of the Mad Mage, and Descent into Avernus hardcovers. Always wanted to play Storm King's Thunder.
Janus - Aasimar Cleric (Twighlight Domain if UA allowed, if not Knowledge or Arcana Domain) - Cloistered Scholar - has been sheltered his whole life but looking to make his mark on the world.
Matterhorn - Human Rogue - Investigator - a socially awkward Sherlock Holmes type. Always has the answer to everything.
Ryu - Gold Dragonborn Fighter - a noble warrior who seeks honor in combat
Thadius - Half-Orc Fighter - a showboat gladiator and former slave who fears no one.
Erdrick - Human Paladin - a classic LG paladin who seeks to smite evil
Also interested in a Genie warlock or Oath of the Watchers Paladin if UA is allowed.
Thanks!
Additional Notes: I like to fit my character to the party if necessary. Also like to flesh out my character’s backstory to tie it into whatever campaign they are a part of. They may look a little light, but that gives me flexibility to work with the DM on creating a backstory that fits the campaign. Enjoy multiclassing but will always have an RP reason for doing it. One guy I played with multiclassed every character into a War Magic Wizard to get Shield. Not how I like to do it.
Just kidding. I'm a humble roleplayer who got hooked after finding an AD&D Monster Manual at a yard sale - the one with the red dragon and the pegasi. Started playing 3rd not long after that. Took a break during the 4e era and got right back in with 5e. I'm the DM for my IRL group but I prefer being a player and I love creating characters. I'm the kind of guy that likes to win but also loves the drama when his character gets killed. Most of my RP experience was actually systemless - too many of my teenage hours were spent on a humble site called Gaia online where I often dropped my D&D murderhobo OCs into anime fantasy high school dating sims. Hijinks ensued. As time went on I joined better and better games and my writing improved. I've gotten a little bit rustier since then, as actual socialization took some of the weight off of electronic friendships, but I think I'm better for the years that make me cringe. Not that I think I'm better than the average RPer. I've been pleasantly surprised by how literate a lot of our peers are here. You can, of course, check my profile for examples.
Altogether I'm a pretty good sport about these games. Every cloud (giant) has a silver lining - if I need to roll up a new character after getting gobbled up by a purple worm, I'll do it with a smile inside of an hour.
Oh! Time zones. I'm actually on the West Coast of the USA, so GMT-8 but I work nights and can post at work, so I usually only have a 6-8 'blackout' period on any given day where I unfortunately should be sleeping. The exception is Sunday where I might be slightly slower due to running my meatspace games.
Anywho, I have two candidates. The first is more exotic but more exciting. You only explicitly allowed three books but you also only explicitly banned Homebrew (and Tortles, rip) so I thought I'd give it a shot. I have a Master subscription and all the books, so I can share content if that's the problem. The second is safer and more likely to pop up in a vanilla fantasy adventure, I think.
Tywaz Grimfang hails from a tribe of nomadic leonin in the rolling grasslands of the Shaar. Life was nasty, brutish, and short. Among the greatest threats was an ongoing rivalry with the area's gnolls - but one year they disappeared and ceased raiding the leonin. The leonin let their guard down and were slaughtered - the gnolls had bolstered their forces by raiding and feeding on softer targets during that year. The leonin survivors scattered. Tywaz made his way to more civilized lands where he sells his strength to get by, learning what he can from how these strange people conquered the savage wild. Physically powerful, he is starting to see the value of magic and the written word. (Fighter Rune Knight if acceptable - the flavor appeals to me in a Giant campaign. Barbarian if not. Leonin is from the latest book.)
Stefan Keiseren, born in Waterdeep where he trained from an early age to join the Watch. His aptitude for magic suggested he had a career as a support wizard, but when his father's business hit hard times, he was viewed as a likely recipient for bribery. Unable to pay rent in the big city, he and his family moved to a much smaller town, where adventure would shortly come knocking. (Depending on the game he could be in the town at the start or having just arrived looking for work. Human wizard (war magic).

Another medical problem. Indefinite hiatus. Sorry, all.
Hello!!! Very interested in joining in! I have a decent amount of experience with 5e. Playded a few PbP campaigns, but due to my job I was never able to stick to it. Now I'm on furlough from work for the foreseeable future and have waaaaay too much time on my hands (please help!), I have a little experience with Discord, but have not yet used Avrea. For time zones I live in California (Pacific Time Zone), but I generally stay active all night and sleep during the day. Definitely interested to the RP focus of your campaign.
I have sooo many characters I would like to play! Here area few concepts...
Whisper - Half Elf rogue (Chaotic Good), a treasure hunter currently on the run from a local thieves guild for some slight (can get way more specific if needs be).
Yessalia - Wood Elf ranger (Lawful Neutral), a fledgling adventurer, having heard rumors of giants rampaging the local areas.
Drask - Half Orc barbarian (Neutral), not fitting in with the orc tribe he was born in to, Bjorn has set off to see what the world has to offer, eyes wide with wonder.
Hey! Pretty new player here, got a few months experience of play-by-post on DDB. I'm relatively new to Discord, so I don't know much about our friend Avrae. I will definitely be able to post at least once per day. I live in Mountain Daylight time zone (GMT-6) in case you were wondering. I do prefer roleplay slightly over combat, so an RP-heavy setting will be great to me.
I'm playing all just martial classes right now, so I would like to get some experience with the spellcasting classes. I would prefer to only really flesh out the character to fit in with the campaign and the other characters. But here are some ideas.
Half-Elf Bard -He's deaf. Always has been, always will be. But he took up some music lessons and began to "hear" the world around him in music. Not your typical bard (aka seducing everyone and everything), just wants to share music with the world, spread peace and love.
Dragonborn Hexblade Warlock -An old retired soldier from the king's army who wanted to settle down and live a normal life. Little does he know that his weapon is a mysterious entity from outside of the Material Plane... and it's calling him towards adventure.
Variant Human Draconic Sorcerer -His father was an adventurer before him. After delivering the final blow to slay an ancient red dragon, the dragon placed a curse on his father that the firstborn of each generation after him would have a bit of the dragon's power. As the first recipient of the curse, he inherited not only the dragon's fire, but the dragon's fury. He is out adventuring to try to rid himself of the curse.
I'm not really comfortable using swears, but it's fine for y'all to use them in moderation. I don't mind that much.
Sounds like it could be fun! I'm a returning D&D'er, played in person in the 80s. But now back! So likely to be a bit rusty myself as a player. Also uk based! Got a few character ideas on dndbeyond and could play what suits really.
I'm on roll20 and discord, played some text game and PBP for another game
Character1 - human variant ranger hunter. Mithseis was left as an infant at Miresk's School of Thaumaturgy in Silverymoon and was raised by a couple of the staff who could not bare children of their own. Although he never manged to enter as a student mage, he was a weak and not obviously gifted child, with poor charm and full of gangling awkwardness, he has spent his life either in the books of the library, where he gained a little magical knowledge. Though he felt equally happy out in the woods hunting and stalking. Mithseis has hunger for knowledge and power over the world through solitary autodidact-ism. This has afforded him some great skill, including some minor magic, though little application of the same.
Character - Half Elf Rogue, thief. Born in the noble house of Eaglesworn of Waterdeep, a bastard born of elf mother and no rights or position with the family. He has spent many years watching and socialising in the circles of the rich and wealthy as well as befriending the staff and learning more about the people of the city. Fun loving and mischievous, but bored and looking for the some way to make something for himself, or at least to have some fun along the way.
I'm an IRL forever DM with exactly ONE session as a player and looking to actually use some of the ideas that I have for player characters. Currently running my guys through LMoP, which will lead into a larger campaign depending on how awful they make my life.
My main character is Abaddon.
Abaddon the Black, red half dragon Paladin of Conquest. He is ill-tempered, forceful and demanding who has a vendetta against the Cult of the Dragon. He sees himself as a Talon of Tiamat - an executioner; whose role is to weed out the corruption within the church of Tiamat and excise the wound (kill them), clean out the puss (their supporters), so that the chromatic dragons may grow stronger. He has made it very clear on many occasions that it was by the Grace of Tiamat that they were spared (he has acted of behalf of his dragon Queen to save numerous peoples).
He is convinced that the Cult of the Dragon has manipulated Tiamat, and seeks to do her harm in some fashion and is on a quest to find evidence of his beliefs. He does not believe they have suddenly changed their tune, and holds a massive grudge against them for having corrupted the Dark Queens children for centuries and transforming them into undead abominations (Dracoliches).
He aspires to join the fabled order of the Knights of the Five-Thorned Rose, an elite band of crusaders who hunt followers of Bahamut. In order to gain the attention of the Knights, he intends on proving that the Cult of the Dragon are looking to corrupt Tiamat in some way, destroy them, and then take his arms against Bahamut.
I also have a Half-Elf Swashbuckler Rogue that I'm looking to play as a landlocked pirate. Still fluffing him out though.

Forever DMing with ideas for characters. My characters: Abaddon: Dragonborn Conquest Paladin of Tiamat. Eyrendil Ginn: Half-Elf Swashbuckler Rogue/Pirate. Wear boots with spurs so is always heard coming.
Maika has always known the monastery. The tough turbulent teenage years proved too much for the protege, and she escaped into the world she thought she longed for. Her skills found her a mercenary group; young and on the rise. Lost in the throws of success, the group slipped one too many times and Maika woke up to the fact the group was slipping into banditry. Not heeding to her words, she cut her way free from the mercenary group, she found herself heavy with shame and so cold being so far from the braziers at the monastery. With the wisdom of her masters' words now sinking in, she stands and walks back on the honest path. She has lost some time, and hopefully it is not too late. Maika's knows she has to earn her place back in monastery, where she can start again from scratch...
I've been playing for a while, just under a year. I DM a game over Discord voice chat, and played on her for like 8-10 months.
I throroughly enjoy written PbP games due to the allowed time to develop the growth of the character, and describe their take on the world by using nice words. :)
Thank you all so much for some amazing responses. I’ll take some time over the next couple days to properly read through them all, and will be in touch later this week / by the weekend if work gets craz(y/ier).
Thank you again to everyone who posted above. It's been a tough set of choices, but I've now contacted those who will be starting in this campaign. It's been a lot more difficult than I expected, which is a testament to some of the great character ideas above - I could easily have filled 2 campaigns, if I only had the time!
Best wishes to all those unsuccessful on this occasion, and good look with your future gaming..

Anyone else up for DMing another campaign? I’d be happy to cover the cost of the hardcover or digital copy for anyone that would volunteer

That's very kind. I cannot DM though, but happy to tag along if you find someone?
Hope you have a great campaign!
