On it's person is some sort of collectible. It appears to be a skeletal bone. You find:
CERVICAL VERTEBRA OF MAZTEN, THE BREWMASTER "Mazten, the Brewmaster, gave ignoble fame to his monastery by brewing the most famous beer in all Barovia. One night, the flames of a fire raised his legend to the heavens." (As long as you have the vertebra on your person, the person carrying it gets +1 to attack and damage, forever.)
The Barovian wasteland makes this place stick out like a sore thumb.
You come to a completely dried lake enclosed by dust and rocky bluffs. The dusk sun is still warm upon your skin, unrelenting. Whatever is left of the trail ends at a weed-covered causeway that stretches a hundred yards across the dried lake crater to a flat, dry island with a stone tower on it. The tower is old and decrepit, with collapsing scaffolds clinging to one side where a large gash has split the wall. Timeworn religious angelic statues, their wings and legs covered with dead moss, perch atop buttresses that support the walls.
Parked near the base of the tower, within sight of the entrance, is a barrel-topped wagon spattered with dried blood.
