The Elven host takes a small bow as the Reinholdts arrive, “Of course Lord Reinholdt, and the elder Lord Reinholdt. Glad to see you back in the city, fresh from your studies. I assume you are here to support your sister in the charity poker game tonight?” he directs Cico and the horses to go around the building to the stables at the back. ” If you would please make sure any magic items and weapons are left with your servant and horse, it would be much appreciated. Any breaching of this policy will result in confiscation of said item and your ejection from the premises.”
The elf looks you all up and down. “Your scribe is more than well dressed enough Sir Edvord, but I thought Sir Aldrik was aware of the dress code here. I cannot let your squire in as they are currently, and as much good will as your family has, it would displease the other guests to see our policies being waved away for certain individuals. I hope you understand.”
Cico
As you walk around the complex, the garish audacity of it’s design assaults your eyes. A hodgepodge of red and gold brick creates an unsettling feeling in your stomach. The shape of the building is confusing, with some parts jutting out and some receding. Great for you though as there seems to be plenty of alcoves you could slink into. The floor above features small balconies, with ornate gold railings around them. Sets of ivory doors paned with glass lead into the building, many left wide open in the summer sun, a light breeze slightly animating thin silk curtains. 5
A female sun elf sits on one of the balconies, wearing an opulent gold dress. She holds herself as someone who puts on a powerful facade, a regal aura emanating from her. At this one moment however, when she’s seemingly alone, you see her mask slip just a little, as she stares into the distance, completely alone.
Further along, next to the stables are a bin area, a porter carries out a squelching tin of food waste from a small door in the main building. The stables are accompanied by a large waiting room where servants bearing various noble crests guard the valuables of their employers. Staff of the Gentle Mermaid bustle around looking after the horses.
"Ah, my dear fellow, I would of course agree with you! However, my squire's dress, and indeed, her very presence here is all to help our dearest sister and her charity!" He leans forward, whispering to the elf, though loud enough that Lyss, Edvord, and Aimee can follow along. "The poor child, her family was lost to the plague, and her last possessions were stolen by ruffians who thought that this innocent life was worth less than a few coppers. How could they beat and steal from such a tiny, precious creature? Look at her, man."
"Anyway, you surely know that my sister's charity is helping support the destitute of the dock ward. I am here to show my support by reminding them that they, too, can make the difference in a Waterdhavian child's life! For a mere pittance for the elite of Waterdeep, one can support a child to a better life. And how could I remind them of such if they do not see a nobleman interacting with the very child he has chosen to support, to see the very contrast of life as it is and as it could be?"
OOC: Will hold off on a check til the others can help the bluff
At the mention of allowable possessions, Edvord removed his coin purse and a single weathered book from his pack before stashing the remainder of his belongings in Aldrik's saddlebags.
After being reminded of the required attire at the establishment by their Elven host, Edvord started to motion for Lyss to join Cico and Kerri, but stopped mid wave as his brother began to speak. A brief flash of alarm crosses Edvord's face before he quickly regains his composure.
Turning to the host after Aldrik and Lyss speak, Edvord adds in Elvish, <Worry not my good sir, we would not bring an ordinary street tramp into your fine establishment. Only after a painstaking... shall we say selection, has this young halfling been cleaned, trained, and groomed to fulfill the roll outlined by my dear brother. The outward appearance is merely costume.> After waiting a few moments to judge the host's reaction, Edvord adds, <If this does not satisfy your conditions for approval, perhaps a slightly higher share of 'our' charities' assuredly greater accounts receivable for the evening could offset this imposition?>
Cico walks the horses to the stables, making sure the group's weapons are secure as he does.
The building he finds overwhelming. Twice he has to stop, close his eyes, count slowly to 5 while he rubs his index finger with his thumb. Opening his eyes the second time he notices the sun elf on the balcony. She does not like this place either, he thinks to himself.
Once at the stables he looks more closely at the doorways and the waiting room.
(OOC - is the small doorway the porter came out of the only door into the casino? The waiting room is attached to the stables, and I'm assuming detached from the casino - ie there's no way from the waiting room to enter the casino).
Cico looks at the noisy waiting room and steers clear of it completely and focuses back on the side door that the porter came out of. He doesn't look around, but just heads straight to the door as if he is going somewhere with purpose and tries opening the door and walking inside.
The host’s face reddens, “Certainly….. we are big supporters of…. charity… and the um… act of um… giving. We should all be looking out for those less fortunate, and we support you wholeheartedly” He backs away slightly from Lyss, whispering over to the brothers. “No diseases right? Quick, get her in, and get her something half decent to wear. An outfitter came by earlier to visit your sister, maybe he can help. Just straight up the stairs, her names on the door.”
Upon entering, you are greeted with an opulent hall. Diamond chandeliers hang from the ceiling over the marble floor. Crowds of well dressed nobles gamble and drink. Red carpeted stairs lead up to the guest rooms. You’re in.. now what?
Cico and Kerri
Kerri, you see Cico try a door into the building. The door opens easily and he walks in with a sense of purpose.
Cico, you enter to a bustle of pots and plans, and a wave of heat. Chefs bustle around and as you try to walk through you are intercepted. Just as you think you’ve been caught, a sack of carrots is thrust into your arms. ”Peeled washed and julienned…. Now.”
"Very well, thank you my good fellow. We will be on our way, then."
Looking at Lyss, and reflexively checking his own coinpurse, Aldrik whispers through a grimace. "Not here, not yet at least. Let's not burn a bridge before we've crossed it. Shall we go meet our dear sister, and get you some hopefully on-the-house clothes to help you blend in better? That way we can better search for the 'something in blue' from the riddle..."
"Well, if we were looking for alternatives to Mirt, two are present here... Lady Remalia Haventree is one of the prominent lenders, and if Lady Ammalia Cassalantar is here, so surely is her husband Victoro... Sad to say that Miss Betraya Stabs-backs will not be present for the dock ward representative. And Mirt works with Lady Silverhand, as well."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Cico looks down at the sack of carrots in his hands. He takes one out, turns it slowly in his hands, examining it on all sides, then puts it back in the sack.
Everyone in the abbey has had to spend time in the kitchen. All chores are shared by everyone.
"But what on earth is julienned?" Cico says to himself as he finishes his thoughts aloud. "Washed yes, but why would you peel them? Carrots don't have a peel."
He shrugs and looks around the kitchen, sack of carrots under one arm he looks to find water and some open counter space near an exit opposite to the one he came in.
For a moment he gets lost in the rhythm and motion of washing the carrots. He finds the work with his hands calming and a distraction from the noise of this kitchen, especially the very loud chef.
But then he remembers why he's there and looks around for the exit from the kitchen into the casino. But then another thought comes to him. If someone has taken the statuette and it's here in the casino, it won't be just out in the open. While he finishes washing carrots, Cico looks to see if there are trays of food, complete meals being prepared for delivery, the kind that might be taken to private rooms.
(Yes to the no weapons policy.)
