With no reason to head back to town, and not yet ready to reveal to Uragum that he cannot be seen in Phlan with the goliath while he is the topic of negative gossip, Sylyra tells the others he will stay at the graveyard and wait for their return. If he is asked why, he replies, looking askance, "Is that any business of yours?"
Hex shrugs and gives Ola a reassuring smile. "She told me enough that I'm pretty sure I know what I'm getting myself into. Besides, I think I can handle a few undead. I'm not as feeble as I may look."
"Great, I guess? Good mission to break ya in on." Uragum says finishing with a smile. "Ill be back in a moment. Need to grab somethin from my room." He then heads to his room and grabs his staff.
If the group has no more questions to ask or information to give, Hex will wait patiently outside the tavern for the others to collect their things. While she's out there, she reads over the request for aid Ola mentioned.
OOC: would DM allow Ola to buy silk rope instead of ordinary one? I already replaced it (and took off the gold) but if you say "no" it can be changed.
Ola did not have questions, and it's not like they could stop Hex from going to the dungeon anyway - the request was on public display for anyone to answer the call. She repacked her backpack, gave one last look to the crossbow - it was a nice weapon, hold good memories and she still could not bring herself to just sell it - and finally left the room.
"We can go now if you still want to join," nodded Ola to Hex. "I believe Zelra mentioned our names but let me introduce the group properly. I am Ola, that giant with the staff is Uragum, and the man with the bow - Arnald. Sylyra is already waiting at the cemetery with our guide. We are not what you would call a tight unit but used to work together and already went through a lot. Welcome to the group." She gave another polite smile and led the now four member party back to the graveyard.
Violin sound was a good indicator so the group could walk straight to meeting point. "Must be Sylyra," explained Ola to the newcomer, "he is getting better at this." When they all were finally reunited, she took it upon herself to introduce the tiefling. "Sylyra, it seems there will be more of us in the catacombs. This is Hex, a friend of Zelra with greetings from her. Hex - this is Sylyra, that you no doubt heard a lot about." Considering her duty to be fulfilled she asked more practical question: "Any sign of the guide yet?"
Sylyra blinks at the tiefling, clearly not warm to her presence. "She's not the guide?" He turns to glare at the blue elf. "I think you have a problem, m'dear. What is this need of yours to pick up strays?" He looks back at the tiefling. "One died, one disappeared, and one, she abandoned here in this graveyard." Looking back at Ola, he continues to Hex, "You'd better be careful if you're next." He stows his viol and heads in the direction of what he assumes is the main chapel. The others hear the elf comment aloud to himself, "At least this one doesn't talk incessantly."
Ola sighed. "A touchy subject, I'm afraid. The sudden departure of our last companion hit Sylyra hard - he was quite fond of the girl. Please do not hold that against him". The main chapel is hard to miss, and she followed along.
Hex raises an intrigued brow at Sylyra as she follows him to the main chapel, walking alongside Ola. "Nice to meet you too," she calls out to him before turning back to Ola with an amused look on her face. "Exactly how Zelra described him."
Doomguide Yovir Glandon introduces himself to Hex when you return, and beside the stoic old man is a young, plain-looking female half-elf wearing the same grey robes of the Kelemvorites. She appears to be in her early twenties and has a hooded lantern hooked onto one hip, and a small club strapped to the other.
"This is Cassyt. She will be able to guide you through the known parts of the catacombs. I will be back in one moment," Yovir says, moving outside and shouting something as the doors close behind him.
Cassyt bows her head politely and replies, "I also know some minor cantrips that may be of some assistance."
Yovir soon returns with another acolyte, a young, deeply tanned human teenager who yelps in delight as she runs toward each member of the party and wraps their waist in a hug. Her curly hair bounces as she hands a pair of goggles she has been carrying to Arnald. "I only wear dem once but dese are fun!" she says. She stops just short of hugging Hex as well, instead backing up to a respectful distance and bowing with both hands together.
"Elisande has doing quite well. She is enthusiastic about her tasks, especially in tending to graves, and her accent is already improving. I cannot say the same for Yip, I am afraid. I believe his mind has been thoroughly destroyed; the statue has done nothing but bring him grief," the Doomguide says.
Ola introduced herself and the others to Cassyt, politely admitting, that some simple tricks can be surprisingly useful.
"Happy to see you, Elisande." Ola hugged the girl. She saw the little one just a couple days ago during her regular visit but was genuinely glad nevertheless. "We found Elisande during our last mission - an abandoned child in the most bizarre settlement imaginable. Very glad we were able to help." The explanation was meant for Hex, to Elisande Ola just added "This lady is called Hex, she is coming with us today."
Ola modded to Doomguide. "Too bad about Yip. And I really hope the statue did not cause or made worse the situation here. Anyway, I believe we are ready, Doomguide Glandon."
Sylyra looks genuinely surprised when Elisande wraps her arms around his waist as well. He raises his arms, elbows bent, to hover above her until she releases him. Eyes wide, but not necessarily angry or offended, the elf glances at the others and then clears his throat and smooths his robes. He gives Cassyt a curt nod when he is introduced, adding, "Of Waterdeep," after Ola supplies his name.
When the party gets going, Sylyra moves to the rear to walk along beside Hex. (I assume that's where she'd be.) Not looking at her, he hisses, "So ... Hex. Is that a moniker you gave yourself, or is it the choice of ... creative parents?"
Hex laughs and shrugs at Sylyra. "Yeah, it's a nickname. Was a troublemaker when I was a kid. A bunch of people cursed me out a lot so I thought it would be funny and "cool" to call myself Hex. Been using it so long, I don't even remember the name my parents gave me."
"Nice ta meet you, Hex!" Elisande bows again, waving the party farewell before heading back to her tasks.
Doomguide Glandon escorts the party with Cassyt through a stone structure that resembles the many mausoleums in the graveyard, except that it has an open archway rather than a door. Inside is a small paved floor that opens into a wide stone staircase. The building itself appears to be little more than a covering over the stairs.
"I leave you in Cassyt's capable hands. Please, stay safe," Yovir says. He departs as Cassyt fills her lantern with oil, flooding the tunnels ahead with light.
Although the catacombs are excavated from earth and stone, the tunnels look nothing like a mine. The walls and 10-foot-high ceilings are faced with smooth stone, and some have decorative features such as faux pillars, ledges, geometric designs, and scenes of life or religious themes carved into the stone.
The catacombs are completely dark aside from Cassyt's light. Niches are carved into the walls every 20 feet for placement of oil lamps, but no lamps themselves are placed in the niches. Sound is effectively deadened; occasionally dripping water can be heard but for the most part the catacombs are as silent as the grave.
After a long walk, the base of the stairs opens into a large, irregularly-shaped chamber. Stone ledges are carved along most of the walls to serve as tables.
The far wall of this room is covered in a huge fresco. The painted tiles portray people from every walk of life, arranged with no sense of perspective or relative scale. The design looks to have suffered heavy damage from water seepage and mildew over the centuries.
There is one door in the room, along the left wall. The room also looks to extend further to the left, around a bend.
Ola, unable to see in the darkness, kept close to their guide. "Strange painting. How old is it?" The group was not here for the sightseeing but Ola was genuinely curious and listen the answer (if it came) with an honest interest. "So, two exits already here. What is behind that door?" Asked she Cassyt a more practical question.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Uragum followed behind. As things got darker, he'd pull out a torch and and light it for himself as well. He figure, with them underground he could always drop if it needed and not have to worry about it starting the place on fire. When they reached the room with the tiled wall he stops to take a look. Mirroring Ola he asks, "Yay, what's up with the painting. Doesn't look religious, or really that fancy. It got some sort of other meaning?"
Wondering if I could make a intelligence check about the wall. insight, investigation, nature, religion and straight int mod are at +3, Arcana is +5. here is a d20 roll. 9
Despite there being no obvious danger in the room, Hex takes out her bow and nocks an arrow in it. Her expression is mostly relaxed but also slightly intrigued as she stands near the back of the group, watching how everyone works.
Not that he would show it, but Sylyra is actually a bit intrigued by the catacombs. The covered stairs, the decorative elements, and even the artwork are all unexpected and pleasing. Perhaps his place isn't so backwater after all. Seeing Hex ready for danger, the elf asks the guide, "How far until where your associate was found?"
