While Silthras moves to investigate the desk, Usul quite literally drops down on all fours, combing over every inch of the floorboards. As the Silthras is halfway through knocking on different parts of the desk for hollow areas, the gnome has crawled underneath the bed to continue his investigation.
As he runs his fingers along the wood floor, they catch on a small ledge sticking up. With a firm push, a sliding door reveals a hidden shaft, with a iron ladder rungs descending into darkness...
At the sound of the sliding door opening, Silthras looks up and nods in satisfaction, "I knew it!"
He stares for a moment, hands searching carefully in the back of the desk drawer, but can't help himself: He stands cautiously and walks over to the trap door, looking down. When he has satisfied his curiosity, he returns to his methodical search of the desk.
As his fingers feel the hidden door a big grin appears on Usul's face and he pops up to say, "We got it!" as Dib stands up on his shoulder excitedly sniffing the air. As he's about to leap down the stairs he pauses and says, "Maybe a bit slower this time?"looking around to to the others.
Silthras nods, "Aye. And it may be worth looking in that bag of yours before we proceed." He nods in the direction of the newly acquired bag. "Nicely done, by the way. I never thought we had a chance of tracking them..." he shrugs and looks around the room, "...but seeing what it is that they were after could be very useful. Quick thinking indeed!"
@DM: Did their investigation reveal if the door had been used recently: if there's dust in the room, was it disturbed? If the rooms is clean, is there new dirt from the street?
Usul looks up, clearly pleased to hear the praise coming from his friend, more so as he’d been worried that he’d acted too rashly, as he pulls his bag over looking into it. Popping his head up he says, “We might need some time to go through it all… but what about that?” Pointing to the trap door in the floor. “Though they probably don’t expect us to follow through… should we follow them now? Or make it look like we couldn’t find anything and watch it? Oh! Or maybe call that other guy with the cat rings!” Then quieting a bit he says… “We should probably keep ours a secret yeah?”As he fingers the cat ring on his left thumb.
The investigation did not reveal if the door had been used recently. Very hard to tell really. There's dust and dirt in the room, but it's all uneven and randomly distributed.
Kal crouches down, glancing under the bed to get a look at the trap door Usul had found. "A dark hole in the ground, very exciting." Straighteningback up, he considers their next move. "I'm curious to see what they were after too, but this doesn't seem like the place to stop and look."
He grimaces at the thought of chasing those kids into another trap...But they needed to know where they were going. "We could take a quick look around. At least see how far down it goes. If we don't like what we see, we retreat, fill Kaz in on what happened, and come back later."
Two things: A) Kal is gonna use Harness Divine Power to recover a spell slot. B) Do we have a sense that the sounds of that fight could be heard outside?
The loudest thing that would have happened would be your voices and the clashing of steel. No one used a particularly loud spell, and this home has a bit of distance between other buildings.
"I think a little further exploration couldn't hurt, but it could be dangerous. I'm close to being tapped out. I've got one last Invisibility cast in me if we're trying to be sneaky." Sylnora says, looking anxiously at the trap door.
Silthras nods, "Yes, I agree, let's continue. But before we go, I'd like to know what's in the bag... Books? What had them so interested? We can investigate fully later, of course."
@DM: What did Silthras see when he looked into the darkness? Lol, did it look back?
It goes down far. Greater than 100ft, nearing the edge of Silthras' vision. And this is a pretty narrow shaft. Like if you were to climb down, everyone except for Usul would probably have their backs brushing against the wall. So at the very bottom Silthras would only see a rocky floor.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Oh. My bad. Yes. There's an unopened door down the hallway on the north side. This was that room in the southeast corner. It was two doors leading into it.
I'm just going to "SOP" this.
Investigation: 22
Your group performs a quick sweep of the rest of the house. Through the door in the hallway you find a large room, filled with smashed wooden furniture. Broken tables, chairs, shelves, and the like. You can see hanging on the wall is part of a broken stool with a bullseye painted on it. There are some chipped throwing knives laying on the floor underneath it. Broken bottles of cheap alcohol also litter the floor, as well as some other pieces of trash.
You spend some time lifting the broken pieces of furniture to look for more hidden doors or compartments, but nothing comes up. It seems like this room was used for trash, and maybe a place where they would spend some downtime.
Before they proceed down the ladder, Silthras rummages in his pockets and produces the small stone that Velyra gave him. He hands it to Usul, "This may be useful if you are attacked, it can shield you for a short time. If you use it, I will try to recharge it when we rest."
"Wow. Cool!" Usul says, picking up the stone. "Though... we're pretty quick on our feet already. Sure no one else needs it?"* Then looking around adds, "so... should we check out the hole first?"
((I've got uncanny dodge, which is pretty good at dealing with damage (unless it's a multi attack in one round of course), and rogues tend to stay back. I'm happy to hold on to it in case, but it might be better suited elsewhere))
"Save it for an extreme situation, which...I get the feeling we have many of those in our near future." Kal says, waving away the stone. "Down the hatch we go I suppose. Want me to go first?"
Three of us already have the Shield spell learned/prepared lol.
And you have to have the spell on your lists to cast it (otherwise I'd have probably handed you a cure spell); happy if anyone wants anything else...
Silthras shrugs, "Use it if you're going to get clobbered -- that's my advice. Or some caster launches missiles at you. Like I said, I can recharge when we rest. Although...when we get our amulets...it'll need a few hours."
If they're going to go down the trapdoor, Kal will move the bed out of the way and begin making his way down. Blind as he is in total darkness, once he reaches the bottom he moves out of the way so the next person can land and activates Light on the driftglobe he has.

Silthras grunts after looking down the deep, dark, hole. "Perhaps we should check the other doors first?"

As Kal goes to descend, Velyra holds up a finger. "Hold on." She turns to Usul, "Can we take a quick look in the bag you took from them first?"
"If it's something really important, we may want to spread the contents between a few different places so it's harder for them to get back."
If they're doing this, Velyra will give the contents a once over with Guidance to get an idea of what they are/the time period.
