Looking for 3 players/writers to join me for a variation on play-by-post.
I have been calling the variation simply "Textplay". I developed it as a way play solo D&D, and a way to practice my roleplaying, DM'ing skills and my writing skills (all still need work... just fyi...). I'm quite enjoying it honestly... and I feel better equipped when I DM with groups as a result.
How does it work? I write through the adventure, taking the role of everyone... DM, NPCs and PC's. I try to mimic what happens around a table as I write. I use simple text structure to indicate when a Player/PC is speaking and rolling dice and when the DM is. Here is an example. (This has no editing polish...fyi). Roonoo] and Daine] are the PCs in this scene and "]" signifies the DM is 'speaking'. [()] indicates the DM rolling behind the screen.
I thought I might try the idea out in collab with a few others. Perhaps you would be interested?
Basic idea: there is a Textplay 'baton' that is passed around (in initiative order). Whoever has the baton is the sole Writer/DM, taking the role of both DM and all of the PCs. The active Writer/DM is in fully charge of where the story goes, the decisions and actions of all of the players, etc. After a week, the scene(s) is posted and the baton passes to the next Writer/DM. Each month should represent a full cycle with 4 Writer/DMs contributing to the overall adventure.
Each of us will contribute a character of our own design. Each of us will effectively play all four characters when we are the Writer/DM, though we will focus on the development of our own character when we have the baton.
Applicants must: - Enjoy writing (and collaborating with and even encouraging other writers) - Have some minimal experience as a DM - Be at least somewhat familiar with Forgotten Realms lore - Have access to the WoTC Adventure Module Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden
We will be adventuring in the Frozenfar... Icewind Dale. Rime of the Frostmaiden will be the overarching campaign, each Writer/DM has the freedom to modify as they like, adding encounters, custom monsters, introducing new NPCs, tweaking the published adventure, etc. Homebrew items, feats, subclasses are all encouraged as long as they fit in with the lore of Faerun. This whole thing is an experiment.. so if you have ideas for improving the play, the readability, whatever, I am open to collab and creativity.
Investment: You will only write / lead the party one week out of every month. You will write a minimum of 1 scene (max of 3, just so we can keep up). A "scene" is typically one (maybe two) of the three pillars - Combat, Exploration, Social Interaction. (My example above is approx 1 Scene.) The rest of the time you will simply keep up with the posts of the other 3 Writer/DMs so you know where the story is going. If you are not available for your week, simply pass the baton to the next in initiative.
Interested in joining the experiment?PM me for more details.
