You rest then come back to search the area with the ghouls, which has nothing of value. You can go east to the maze-like area or north to an a large room
A blast furnace and a mechanical bellows powered by a waterwheel dominate this large chamber. The furnace is cold and dark, but heaps of coal are piled nearby, along with carts full of unrefined ore. The waterwheel sits in a ten-foot-wide channel cut into the floor of the room, but the channel is dry. Passages exit to the west, south, and east. The empty channel exits to the north and east.
Eight withered corpses (zombies) are scattered around the room. These slain dwarves and orcs are still wearing the remnants of their armour. Floating above them is a skull engulfed in green flame. They react when you come into view but as long as you don't enter the room they only watch you.
"The best I can do is throw snowballs," says Thar, "like I did against that last lot of ghouls. They can catch anything withing a 5' radius. Not very big I'm afraid but might get a few if they are close together."
Gijigume has a think on what he knows of flaming skulls.
OOC: Not sure what skill it comes under, DM can roll.
It's Arcana 10 and Thar as well because he has proficiency in that skill 20
Its called a Flameskull and required powerful necromantic magic to create. This means it has been here a very long time. Upon hearing this Grond speaks out "As this thing is still here it means that Kinslayer has not passed this way. We still have one more path to try before we have to risk creepy undead fire things or rooms full of poisonous spore spraying mushrooms. Agreed?"
"Hmmm, risk? I was all set to thump some skulls... As they say. We can go another route first I suppose." Fah'lin follows Grond's suggestion and heads the other way.
This area consists of numerous intersecting passages. The ceilings here are only six feet high, and several of the passages end in partially excavated rock faces.
"I hope nothing caves in on us." (Perception: 6) "Maybe Grond should lead the way..."
Grond glares at Fah'lin at that remark "Fine".
He leads through the maze until you come to a corridor leading north.
A still pool fills much of this cavern. The water is dark, revealing little of what might lie within. The shore of the pool consists of a thin layer of broken shells from strange, pale mussels, and a fishy odour hangs in the air. There are set of steps climbing up to the east and a sluggish stream flowing out of the cave to the northeast.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"They've used water before," comments Gijigume, "but let's not worry about that yet." The elf heads over to the stairs and tries to perceive what he can.
OOC: Move to stairs, but stay behaind cover from anybody up them. Peception 8.

It seems that those pointy elven ears do have a use. There is a corridor going north and across it from your position is a door; from beyond it you hear a muttering in deep voices using a language you don't understand. From up the north corridor you hear the sound of rock being moved.
"There's a door up there with creatures behind it, while the passage continues to the north and I can hear sounds of movement from up there," explains Gijigume, "so we can either go through the door and hope what's to the north does wade in, or try to creep past the door and check out the north first."

Grond "Fah'lin, sneak up to the north and see what's going on there. The rest of us can set up close to that other door in case something comes out." Freaks me out... the party sneak is a paladin in heavy armour. ;-)
Thar is happy to take a short rest. Recover 6 hit points and his two first level spell slots.
Gijigume takes the opportunity to recover some (5) health.

"Sounds like a good idea to me," agrees Gijigume.

Fah'lin moves up next to Gijigume. Seeing his look of concentration Fah'lin waits to act.

Thar takes up a position from where he provide support should the door open, whilst we await Fah'lin's report should he sneak north.
