Caldath pays the asking price and motions anyone not bartering over to him.
"Seems to me," He says in a low voice, "We've got a mostly finished mine the owner gave up on. If we DO take care of this pest problem... I don't see why Fultane needs to know. Do we know anyone who could do some mining and can be trusted to keep quiet about it? If so, let's let them know the situation, collapse the entrance behind us on the way out, blame the bugs, then dig back in from another direction when this job's over. We get some extra coin, maybe even a base of operations out of this. Maybe even enough space and money to hire on some sellswords... become a proper mercenary company."
Warren listens to Caldath's proposal, then looks away in deep thought for a few moments. "The Radiant Shields discourage personal wealth beyond the tools needed for our mission, so I'm not about to engage in any compromising deals for the sake of money." He makes his stance clear in a resolute tone.
"But," he offers, "if the owner truly has forsaken the mine, and as long as nobody performs any genuinely sinister actions in this endeavor, I... wouldn't necessarily be compelled to stop you."
Anyone may attempt a persuasion OR intimidate check to get better prices on the ponies. However, only one check may be made for the group (though an assist is allowed, thus granting advantage).
Griffen eyes the horses available and comments on the questionable breeding of the horses.
He attempts to persuade the stable master to sell the horses for cheaper. If successful he attempts to pocket the gold saved from those who paid the full amount without question.
Griffen (with assistance from Wick) succeeds in obtaining a 48gp discount on the ponies IF all 6 are bought and paid for at once (132gp in total for 6 ponies or 22gp per character).
ARE ALL PLAYERS WILLING TO PAY 22GP FOR THEIR PONY?
Having purchased their ponies, the party sets out for the mine. Though the route initially keeps to a main trade road leading away from the village, after several miles the group must turn onto a small path leading up into the higher foothills and toward the mountains. With the narrowness of the path forcing the party to ride single file and the snow coming down harder than this morning, visibility is significantly limited.
After a little less than an hour of riding, the entire party hears a deep, gravely voice rumble from behind a large boulder just ahead on left side of the path: "So hungry! Need something to eat... no Elves - all bone. Need meat. Meat would be good... Some Dwarf, roasted just a bit - maybe some human on the side. Hhmm..."
Quiet as he can, Caldath will draw out his sword and shield and wait to see what his fellow adventurers will do. (He was not panning on an ambush so his chainmail will not factor into defense, as it's still in his kit bag)
If Griffen attempts to barter, Wick will lends his help (assist with roll)
