Thulmar pulls his thrown axe from where it had imbedded itself in the kobolds armour then, with a roll of his shoulders he strides across the room to the northern tunnel entrance and cautiously walks down the slight slope.
The tunnel's downward slope ends where it opens onto the center shaft. A wooden walkway extends from this opening and then runs westward to another tunnel in the rock. In front of you, a large bucket like the one you saw earlier dangles from a taut rope that stretches southward across the shaft and is connected to another wooden platform 15 feet away.
“Looks like we need to go along this walkway to travel forward at all” Motioning to the west, Hrothbert tries to get the group moving. “I’d rather not spend to much time in the open along here ”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Balasar looks at the basket, "Given what I've seen of these kobolds so far," he said, "I do not get the feeling that they would have returned the basket to this side of the mine shaft." He thought for a moment, "the kobolds we ran into may have ridden this thing over, or..."
"OOC: What is the foot traffic toward the westward path compared to those toward the southern path.
"If there is a way," Balasar commented, "we should find a way to keep this basket on this side of the mine shaft. It would cut off any potential ambush from behind us."
“Are we worried about it being functional? If not we just cut the rope and be done with it.” Hrothbert steps up, readying his blade. “I personally would rather not have any chance of an ambush.”
"We may still need to go down that path," Balasar replied, "It would probably be best if we tied it up so that anything to the south of us cannot pull it back to use."
“Fair, I have some in my pack if we choose to tie it back.” Hrothbert pulls out his rope and starts tying the basket in place. “Any suggestions on where best to secure this?”
Looking again Hrothbert sees a pole nearby. He secures the basket and attempts to immobilize the pulley with the rope until it is needed again. “There that should do it. Shall we carry on?” He starts moving his way along the path.
Lurking in the next tunnel are three skittish kobolds. One of them carries a threadbare satchel and wears a fake pair of dragon wings made of thin wood and tattered white cloth. This kobold immediately raises its hands in surrender, saying in Common, "We mean you no harm. Please don't hurt us."
"My fellow kobolds and I were driven from Kelvin's Cairn by a particularly nasty yeti. We took refuge here, and the miners became frightened and fled before I could explain that we meant them no harm. The everlasting winter has made the wilderness unsafe for my kind, and the preternatural cold dulls our wits. Please, we only want a place to stay so we can keep out of this horrible weather. We can work, and we won't cause trouble. Termalaine would be richer for having us."

Balasar:
You find 9 copper between thee two of them, and they are each carrying a beat-up dagger.
As for the reason they are here, you can roll an insight check.

Hrothbert starts up the incline, slowly inching his way forward to get a view over the crest of the floor without revealing to much of his body.
18 Stealth check.

Balasar looks at the rope and basket that spans the way south,
(OOC: Is the basket on the near side of the shaft - the one closest to us, or on the far side - closest to the platform to the south?)
(Near side)

The foot traffic towards the west path seems much more recent.

A wooden pole that the basket's rope is attached to.

"Why have you taken this mine?" Balasar asks, still remaining cautious, just in case the kobolds were trying to trick them
