What exact command will you give to the lion?

The firbolg conveys to Lion that they are to move down the trail, and and run back this way as soon as they are noticed, running past where the party will be waiting in possible ambush.

The lion does not go far before rushing back. A trio of ogres appear on the road, arguing on whether it's "tame kitty"  or "tasty kitty".

Nasaar initiative: 17 Nasaar readies his heavy crossbow for an attack, his force balista also ready to strike.

Gruntor will have waited off to the side to attempt to ambush as the lion led them back... stealth check for hiding  13

The ogres move along the road completely oblivious to your presence (except the lion).

Gruntor, with your previous perception you note a few things about the ogres. The first being that these ogres appear somewhat thin compared to what you would usually expect. The second is that these ogres are realtively well armed and armored. Instead of furs and clubs, these have some primitive, but nevertheless crafted armor and large crude iron weapons. They also wear "helmets" made of beast skulls.

((I didn't get the sense that the army commanders thought the ogres could be reasoned with, are we in agreement that this was largely an 'eliminate the problem' type mission? If so, I think it's Gruntor's option to initiate talking of fighting?))

 The commanders did say that ogres were a problem that is becoming a threat.You were also told that in ages past, the legion had an ogre shock troop within the army.

You would know that ogres are not exactly bright, but the are more intelligent than beasts and can be negotiated with (though such negotiation are unlikely to be favorable if the ogre views you as a weak).

If you start the fight, everyone except the lion gets a surprise round on the ogres.

"Will try to talk. If they don't want to talk, then we put down."

If none of the others object, the firbolg will conjure 🔥 in his hand and hold it so it's licking up the scarred side if his face.

He addresses the ogres in Giant.

Roll persuasion with disadvantage.

(everyone else is still hidden).

Nasaar just sighs as talking is brought up, but is willing to let them give it a go. He stays hidden, his heavy crossbow loaded and ready.

The flame gutters in his hand, leaving behind a cluster of red-orange berries.

Ogres are startled as they they try to comprehend the situation.

"Berry look tasty... Fire hot, fire not tasty. Kitty really not tasty? Big Maw said bring all food to him. But berry look very tasty. Do not want to give berry to Big Maw."

The firbolg plucks a berry off and tosses the rest of the bunch to the ogres, popping the berry in his mouth and crunching with obvious pleasure.

"Berries are VERY tasty! I can give you more to give to Big Maw, but if you bring berries to Big Maw, you should get some too!"

 "You been getting enough to eat? Is Big Maw eating all the food? Maybe have a job that pays in food. I can talk to the right people and get you food, maybe."

Ogres respond.

"No, no! If Big Maw find out, he eat berry, but he also eat kitty and he eat you.

Big Maw eat everything. He says we obey or he eat us too. He says he is King of Mountain, he chosen by gods. He says we need to beat up and eat weak things and beat hobgoblins in small fort."

From your knowledge, you know giants can often command ogres. Many of the superior giants exist only in fragmented stories and myths, but others are not too uncommon. As far as you see, the brutish and voracious manner described seems a good fit for a hill giant.

"Hobgoblin in fort are fighting humans. Big Maw want you help humans? Big Maw make you hungry? Big Maw eat all the food?"

He lowers his voice "What if Big Maw not boss anymore? You help against humans, and get food everyday?"

Ogres respond.

"Not like humans. Stab us with pointy sticks. Big Maw says when he king, he eat humans too. He says gods said so.

If Big Maw not boss, no need to fight fort. But Big Maw very big and strong. Can squish you with one hit."

"Big Maw says gods say this and gods say that. Gods tell you that Big Maw is in charge? Not think so. Who was in charge before Big Maw? If Big Maw not in charge, would ogres fight against humans?"

"Big Maw big. And smashy. And also big. He in charge.

But if Big Maw smashed... he not in charge.

If hoggoblins strong and give food, then hobgoblins in charge."
