So, I’m gonna be running a Mummy Lord boss fight but with a twist: the heart is not in the tomb.
Due to this wrinkle, would the environmental effects end of the Mummy Lord is brought to 0 HP but the heart remains intact and would this award the EXP for beating the Mummy Lord?
The only thing that changes by moving the heart is where the mummy respawns. Environmental effects still end when the body's HP is 0 (until it reforms).
And whether or not to reward EXP is up to you. I would. Especially, if the plan is for them to beat the mummy, but not destroy the heart, otherwise you would just be planning a difficult encounter with not reward.
The creature's stats say that the Mummy Lord can only be "Permanently Destroyed" when its heart is destroyed. This, to me, implies that it can be "temporarily destroyed", so if the Mommy Lord's body is reduced to 0 HP and turns to dust then it is destroyed and the regional effects caused by its presence would stop... at least, for the 24 hours it takes for the Mummy Lord to reform.
Exactly how the XP is distributed is up to the DM... I can understand not wanting to award XP for a temporary destruction, because players might decide to just keep fighting the Mummy over and over for a few days to farm XP. Still, XP doesn't necessarily need to be rewarded just for fighting and killing an enemy, but subduing or just surviving can be rewarded as well. The Mummy Lord's stat block actually calls out two separate XP values... one for defeating the Mummy Lord in its lair and one for defeating a Mummy Lord anywhere else. I'd recommend rewarding the players the 13,000XP for defeating the Mummy Lord, then rewarding the remaining 2,000 if they find and destroy the heart.

Thanks. I wasn’t sure how this sort of stuff for environmental effects worked where a boss can respawn.
