Hello all! Played session last night in which a rules lawyer stated that I cannot both fly and walk 30ft with Gem Flight.
As I understood the description you gain a flying speed, which would be separate from walking speed. Also, other similar things specifically say “you can use your movement to…,” whereas this doesn’t.
If you have more than one speed, such as your walking speed and a flying speed, you can switch back and forth between your speeds during your move. Whenever you switch, subtract the distance you've already moved from the new speed. The result determines how much farther you can move. If the result is 0 or less, you can't use the new speed during the current move.
Since Gem Flight gives you a flying speed equal to your walking speed, you effectively have 30 feet of movement that you can split up between walking and flying however you like.

Am I wrong here? If so, why?
I'd just like to point out that it isn't being a "rules lawyer" to point out when rules are being used incorrectly (unless of course you'd rather play a free form game where folks can do whatever they like).
A "rules lawyer" is a person who argues with the DM over interpretations of the rules, not someone who points out how the rules work. In this case, the rules on having multiple speeds are very clear. Gaining a flying speed equal to your movement speed isn't additive, it allows you a separate mode of movement that can offer a different type of movement but does not increase the total movement available.
A character with a base movement of 30' and a flying speed equal to their movement speed can walk or fly for a combined total distance of 30'.
The challenge of mixed speed movement happens when they are different. A creature with a 30' walking speed and a 60' flying speed (eg a character with the Fly spell cast on them), can move up to 30' walking and any movement spent walking is subtracted from their available fly movement. So such a character could fly 60', they could walk 20' and fly 40' or walk 30' and fly 30'. They could not walk greater than 30' - any remaining movement must be flying.
In the case of Gem Flight, the character has their movement speed (which would normally be 30' but could be modified by various feats and spells) and a fly speed equal to their base movement/walking speed. So, if no modifications, both would be 30' and any movement spent using one mode is subtracted from the other.

You're wrong. It's not about the feature, it's about how having multiple speeds works in general.
